Hmmm, that's a tough one. The box front advertises Peter Parker (see attached
image). We could include the mannequin as the standard figure in the inventory,
but I think people will want the Peter Parker figure as advertised - so maybe
include s693 as an inventory alternate?

First you must consider how best to accomplish your goal. You want to tag all
the Slope 45 2 x 2 parts that are used as the bottom halves of figures with a
unique identifier to make them easier to locate.
Is the word "Minifigure" the most appropriate term to use here? It is already
used for 8,567 items in the catalog. I doubt anyone would use that word when
searching for these particular slopes, but I suppose they might?
The word "Legs" is used 5,679 times. Oddly, in combination ("Minifigure Legs")
we only find 42 uses. Regardless, it might be worth considering the best search
terms to use for your endeavor.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the discussion. You raised some issues
I hadn't considered. I know these changes are frustrating to some of you,
but with written definitions we hope to have a much more solid catalog moving
into the future. Thank all of you for your patience with us.
Of course, when the site gives us submenus for parts we'll be able to more
sharply separate items to make them easier to find.
UNADDRESSED ISSUES
There were still numerous unaddressed issues from both this discussion and the
one we had six months ago. For example, we'll be creating a Slope, Wedge
category, but won't be populating it yet.
To better address the abundance of category issues raised, I think instead of
doing things exactly the same way in October we'll just continuously work
on the next group between now and then. A month wasn't enough time for people
with full-time jobs elsewhere to address everything mentioned and compile the
list.
We have 915 items potentially moving this time (up from 540 items last October),
but we still didn't make it to these suggestions from the February, 2021
discussion:

You bring up good points. There hasn't been a clear line drawn in the past
between what is a Brick, Modified vs. Plate, Modified. That line could be drawn
as follows:
1. Everything not as tall as a full brick is a modified plate.
2. Everything taller than one plate is a modified brick.
3. Everything between brick and plate goes in a separate in-between category.
The in-between items aren't actually bricks or plates. I went with
number 2 when writing category definitions rather than trying to create entirely
new categories for these items, but the same basic arguments could be made for
going with number 1 instead.
I'll attempt to modify the definitions (including possibly going with number
1 instead) to make a little more sense out of the whole thing.

Okay, I understand you now. This is a similar problem to the slope categories,
where the base is used to define the differences between Slope/Slope, Curved
and Slope, Wedge. I still have not quite figured this out yet, including what
it means for this part:
It's a curved slope, but the base is not square or rectangular. Therefore,
according to the current definitions it doesn't fit into any slope category.
As for wedge plates, if we allow attachments and bases taller than a single plate
in height it leads to more items being considered Plate, Wedge because of a general
wedge shape. That includes these modified plates, among others:
The current category definitions restrict the Wedge, Plate category to a strict
definition and leave the Plate, Modified category open to more bizarre and hard-to-categorize
parts. I felt this was the most appropriate approach for future category use
as well as making sense of things, staying with BrickLink tradition, and minimizing
disruption.

Old is an undefined word, as is new. Old as relative to what? We've run
into problems in the past using old/new as descriptors and are definitely moving
away from using those two words. They are ultimately meaningless.
For example, if TLG deliberately changes the colors of grays again, we're
stuck renaming everything again. And to what? Old LBG, New LBG, and Even Newer
LBG?

I should have been more clear. If you disagree with the current situation with
portions of the catalog, please offer concrete suggestions to improve the situation.
This must occur at the level of policy/guidelines.
So, an example of these kinds of suggestions:
1. I think you guys should rewrite the guidelines for minifigs to say
exactly this thing: "Minifigs are defined as (insert content)."
2. Then you guys should delete every item in the catalog that does not
comply with the newly written definition.
Criticizing those who are actually working to resolve some of these longstanding
issues with the catalog makes you feel good and I get that. I do it too and
for the same reasons: it releases neurochemicals for me.
But until you put in the effort to effect solutions rather than just pointing
out problems, you're behaving in destructive rather than constructive ways.

I think we get around it by using the slang term minifig.
I first started asking in the fall of 2018 for this issue to be corrected. In
fact, I made a list of all the different types of things BrickLink considers
to be "minifigs":

I've not gotten any responses whatsoever to my requests to change the way

Yes, in this instance the standard procedure for newly-discovered variants of
all kinds can be followed:
1. Submit a comparison photo showing the differences.
2. Request an additional note. This can be done by including a message
to us with the photo submission or, if you'd prefer a more formal approach,
with a discussion forum catalog request.
3. Request that an item relationship be added for the part as an unsplit
part variant.

The idea is to treat sets with storage cases consistently catalog-wide when the
items in a bundle are packaged separately. Some sets absolutely require separate
catalog entries because they were sold in different ways:
Therefore, for the sake of consistency, all sets should ideally be treated like
the above examples. Moving toward the catalog-wide consistency in this area
was something I began some years ago and never finished.

You are correct that 1944-1 technically should not have an instructions entry.
However, the instructions entry cannot be removed from the set entry due to
a flaw in site architecture. Thus, it remains.

In the absence of written guidelines for item titles, any attempts to standardize
titles is potentially a waste of time.
We are currently struggling in our attempts to adopt written guidelines for the
most important aspects of the catalog and item titles are one of those things
(including how part features such as clips, pins, holes, bars, joints, hinges,
etc. are described and unifying the terminology used). Also sorely needed are
clear, consistent, and easily-comprehensible written guidelines for:
Part assemblies, including figures
Item dimensions
Item numbers
Search terms/keywords
Part variants
Colors and how they're used and inventoried
Our seeming inability to progress in these areas is a result of several different
causes, but we are still trying. The progress is exceptionally slow and we are
no happier about that than everyone else.

I think at this time we probably wouldn't approve an item like this for a
separate catalog entry. It sets too much of a precedent for adding individually-bagged
or boxed interior packaging of sets.
It's possible in the future that we'd have the technical ability to present
an inventory by interior packaging as an alternate view. I know people would
appreciate that functionality. But that would take a whole lot of work and probably
wouldn't happen anytime soon.

Cardboard sleeves (and multipacks), obviously, set a precedent that would indicate
the acceptableness of adding the Diagon Alley box. But, as I said, we probably

You have 33 pending change requests, most of which are to change figure titles.
How about this: before we go shuffling the words in figure titles around yet
again, why don't you suggest some guidelines?

Because some Wus were sorted together by name and others were scattered all over
by name. Now all the Wus are together. If you'd like the title to say "Wu,
Sensei Wu" that's no problem. It still searches just fine no matter the
word order.
But the character's name should be the first word in the title and this fella's
name is Wu. Sensei is an honorific term. That's just a rule I made up,
by the way. Because we have no guidelines.

The season titles do make it convenient to not actually title these figures
(it's another type 1/type 2 method of titling). The sub-categorization of
each figure should already have the season title. It's not necessary in
the figure title.

I forgot about pirates! An interesting example of catalog inconsistency.
What was done for pirates was to name them:
Pirates I
Pirates II
Pirates III
That equates to exactly what I was suggesting.
Pirates I encompasses 1989-2002. Pirates II is for 2009-2010. Pirates III is
for 2015. So past administrators already did what I'm suggesting, but they
failed to title these categories properly (a type 1/type 2 error, where a thing
is seemingly named, but not meaningfully named).
Of course, proper titling can only be done in retrospect because the length of
time a theme will last is unknown. But in retrospect we can see that these categories
should be titled:
Pirates, 1989-2002
Pirates, 2009-2010
Pirates, 2015

Interestingly, classic castle apparently lasted only from 1978-1983. It only
included eight sets.
But here we have a 2013-2014 theme that was titled only "Castle" by TLG and included
around eight sets:
So it has no sub-theme at all. The year-based categorization scheme, at least
in retrospect, makes more obvious sense here than it does in space.

Still, perhaps the primary problems with the use of the word "classic" aren't
so much in space or castle, but in town.

In fairness to those who came before, I have to backtrack on some of that. Perhaps
I was too harsh.
At least for space, it looks like pretty much everything else was named after
the '79-'88 period. So we had Blacktron, Alien Conquest, Futuron, Unitron,
Spyrius, Galaxy Squad, RoboForce, Life on Mars, Ice Planet 2002, Exploriens,
etc.
So there actually was, at least for space, this single decade (not likely to
reoccur) where space sets had a similar theme and appearance, but weren't
officially themed within a titled theme. In fact, after a brief glance I see
just one space set that doesn't really fit in any sub-theme:
So maybe "Classic Space" is fine. Don't know about the other uses of the
word "classic" though. Still not a big fan of the word.
I see that "Classic Town" encompassed the time period of 1978-2005. That's
a pretty big range and there are a lot of different styles of sets in the total
of 452 sets. Some sets within that time period get their own categories without
being classic:
While others from the same year are classic:

C'mon. Nobody's going to search for this. Like, ever. It's not

That gets us to 82 characters with spaces from the current 172 characters. So
your forum request was not approved because this needs to be done through the
change form. Don't forget that anytime a torso assembly is changed the torso
title must also be changed and vice versa. They must always match exactly.

We've asked for a long-term solution for all part variants. Roughly, it
would involve a single catalog entry that buyers or sellers could customize with
specific variants. This will allow people who don't care about variants
to never worry about them. It will also allow much more specificity and sorting
of variants for collectors. So a major win for everyone.
The only problem is how such a system would integrate with inventories, but I'm
sure that can be solved.
As for whether we'll get what we asked for or not . . . well, we do have
XP. And Studio. And a program for building mosaics. And the ADP. And IC.
And the CEP. So . . . priorities, I guess.

They are synonymous. The catalog has failed here in multiple ways:
1. Adding this mold variant in the first place and forcing non-collectors to
try to figure out something that doesn't matter to anyone else.
2. Giving it a confusing title (vented) that applies to all partially open studs.
3. Not properly distinguishing open stud types by title. There are at least
three partially open stud types that are used for than just figure heads. I've
updated this page to show them (scroll to the bottom):

And then the site itself has failed here by not designing a way that collectors
can separate these minor differences while the majority of users can ignore them
if they choose.

Two reasons:
1. Inconsistency within the catalog due to disagreements and the hierarchical
cataloging system.
2. Indecision about the issue due to a number of different factors.
We've got a lengthy list of issues to work on and it may be some time before

We're not completely certain on what part inventories for sets like this
will contain:
but at a minimum it would be parts that only appear on Build-a-Minifigure stations
(likely not figures, though).
We encourage someone knowledgeable about Build-a-Minifigure parts to submit an
inventory so we can see what we're looking at. We also need set entries
with pictures for the missing blister packs and it would be nice to have photos
for the sets (like the one shown above) that were created to provide data for
orphaned parts.

Yes, we'll try to put changes in titles this time around using the keyword
"formerly" and remove them six months later. That's a fair request. I can't
promise we'll do it for every single item, though . . . if we move games
from Gear to Sets, for example, the titles wouldn't change.
The main problem with modifying titles like this is that those things get stuck
in titles and never removed. Here's an item number change from five years
ago:
And there are others scattered throughout the catalog with no way (no keyword)
to locate them. But we'll have a complete list this time and updating the
titles in six months should therefore be simple. So there's no reason we
can't accommodate your request.

Will we move every single thing that needs to be moved this time around? I wish
I could say, "Yes, we will and this won't have to happen again." But honestly,
that's probably not the case since there're over 100,000 items in the
catalog.
But since you asked: last time went fairly well, so we'll try to put a greater
effort into getting more stuff done this time so we don't have to keep doing
this.

Yes, that's correct. Teup explains it:
"The fact that parts are sometimes in a place where you didn't
expect it, will always remain. The cost of the change on the other hand would
be quite big, for sellers like me - both in terms of memory and in terms of storage.
If there would be significant changes, it could change my storage alot and cause
a domino effect where, in an extreme case of changing even parts like these,
I'd have to redesign my entire store layout and hope that it will all still
fit."

It has taken time . . . 20 years of it. Categorizing items is a topic
that has been discussed going back nearly to the founding of the site.
With written category definitions finally official on the site for the first
time in 2020, the time has come for action. We took some action on October 1st,
moving over 500 items. Now we plan to take further action with the support of
the community.

Indeed it will be and I apologize for that. The "it will be inconvenient for
sellers" argument has meant that in the past parts have rarely been moved once
they landed in the catalog - even if the categorizations didn't make sense
in hindsight.
We're trying to minimize the inconvenience, but handing the next generation
of LEGO fans the same catalog we got is not fair. Because then they'll
complain that the catalog makes little sense in some areas. But they'll
get used to it and then complain when things are moved. And pass the same poorly-organized
catalog down to the generation following them. Someone has to end that
cycle.
Now that we have written category definitions our goal is to make a little more
sense of its organization. We're not moving things around because it's
fun, believe me.

I think it is. It's already been discussed at length multiple times in the
forum, both recently and in the past. We've stayed in touch with the discussions
and are really not expecting much difficulty sorting out tiles and plates.

It isn't just me doing this. It's a community effort involving all of
us, including the rest of the catalog team. But yes, the site has no problems
with it.
It's pretty much exactly what we did on October 1st. Just different things
this time around.

| We'll be opening public discussion on February 1st, 2021 for an additional
round of correcting mis-categorizations. The discussion will last through the
end of February.
We'll review internally during the month of March and the approved changes
will occur at the beginning of April.
We plan to address the issue of tiles/plates this time around and also several
issues we couldn't get to last time. No promises, but we're also hoping
to finally move brick-built games from Gear to Sets in response to numerous complaints
over the last decade or so.

The catalog entries will enter the catalog as marked for deletion and serve only

I understand it's frustrating that the catalog isn't updated more frequently.
Some thoughts:
Rebrickable and Brickset aren't marketplaces.
Adding parts to our catalog before they're actually released enables multiple
problems.
The catalog team doesn't have physical access to new parts.
Of the activities you mentioned, we can only consider submissions. We can't
weigh, photograph, or measure things we don't have. It's true that
all of us have personal LEGO part collections, but we don't get new parts
when they're released - we have to buy them in sets like everyone else.
BrickLink is a community effort.
It sounds like you want to sacrifice what BrickLink has always been to gain convenience.
If the catalog is not updated with new items in a timely manner, the community
(including the catalog team) is responsible. Instead of shifting that responsibility
to others, why not accept it?
Why have you not submitted these new parts to the catalog with renders or photos
so that we can have them ready to go on January 1st when the new wave of sets
is released?
Be careful what you ask for.
If you were to keep pushing, you might eventually convince the LEGO Group to
come in and take over the catalog from the community. Your success may (or certainly
may not - don't be so sure of it) give you the convenience you want, but
you will also have succeeded in giving away the catalog and the community's
say-so in how it's kept.
Do you really want the LEGO Group running the catalog? If you do, then I can
assure you with complete confidence that you don't know the LEGO Group as
well as you imagine.

Why don't we just correct the existing catalog entries instead? You can
do this by requesting title and item number changes through the change request
form.

| Today I discovered this previously-unknown 1985 LEGO set and added it to the
catalog:
I've discovered unknown sets before, so the thrill of discovery is not exactly
foreign to me. But I must say the excitement hasn't become stale yet.
