  Dear BrickLink members,

We are very pleased to announce that we are adding member Maggiec to the Community
Expert Program. She is being appointed as a BrickLink Inventories Administrator
and will be serving alongside current Inventories Admins Paulvdb and Turez.

For most of you, Maggie needs no introduction. She is a long-time member of the
site, and has served as a Catalog Administrator for 14 years. She has worked
with several well-known catalog administrators including Firefly and Therobo,
and also Dan Jezek himself.

https://www.bricklink.com/memberAdmins.asp

Most people will associate Maggie with the "catalog" side of the Catalog, but
she has also been active as a contributor on the "inventories" side over the
years as well. In fact, she logged the very first inventory change requests back
in June 2004:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=4535-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

Maggie has been a stabilizing force during some very critical times for the BrickLink
site. And we are very pleased she is joining us now for this next journey, and
we feel she will be an excellent addition to our Catalog team.

Please join me in welcoming her!

Congratulations Maggie and thank-you for all of your hard work!

Only parts that actually appear in a set inventory are listed under Known Colors.
But you should be able to list the part for sale in white once you have it in
hand.

Since this is a new known color now as the large image in my original post

Note that the term "known color" does not mean it is known to exist. Rather,
"known color" means it is in at least one set inventory on BL. So long as there
are no inventories published on BL with that part in reddish brown, it will not
show up under "known color".

Thanks for following up with this! I didn't explain that very well in my
first post.

This terminology should be changed. "Known color" is just not describing what
it signifies. Something like "exists in BL inventories" would be much closer
to the intended meaning.

Niek.

I read it as BL "Known Color", as we are on BL. I agree a new name would be
better for new users, but there are a lot of places on BL the could use improvement
that are probably of a higher value than this.

It does show up now in the drop down and lots for sale info. Although it still
is not easy to find in the macro tag tool since the "Colors with Images" tab
is not sorted. And the "Known colors" is just the Bricklink known colors from
set inventories.

Why not “inventoried colour?”
That’s a bit of a stretch on the meaning of “inventoried” but, in context, I
think it’s understandable, no?

Or “in-inventory colour?”

Wouldn't it be possible to do this with Python?
I was googling "python webbrowser fill form" and got this idea:

- set up a loop where the item number changes from let's say 3069bpb001 to
3069bpb800
- go to the change URL of the part https://www.bricklink.com/catalogReq.asp?itemType=P
- fill the 3 related input fields with pre-filled data for the item 3069b
- submit request for the given part number in the loop
- and so on, until finished

That would be a (ro)bot… and robots are forbidden (supposedly).

Anyway, simpler would be to generate the complete requests for change.  That
is, access the URL the submit button sends its info to, with the correct parameters.

The difference is a bit like between:
— making a humanoid robot to type on your keyboard and move your mouse,
— and making a little electronic device that plugs in like a keyboard and sends
the keystrokes you want.

Wouldn't it be nice if admin Russell would react? He could then learn that
there are a lot of BL members who are willing to help to get the automation of
these processes finally going on.

Yep but the best would really be if it was done at the database level.

Agreed. Then do a forced trigger for all non-decorated entries already in the
DB (so current decorated items get fixed), and then change the current web page
from allowing a manual update on a decorated item if there is no "parent" undecorated
version defined.

+1, it has been raised many times before.

I suspect that they may have lost the

Part No: 40359a Name: Minifigure, Utensil Key
*
40359a Minifigure, Utensil Key
Parts: Minifigure, Utensil
(or the expertise) to the database

*
2958pb051 Technic, Disk 3 x 3 with Dark Red 'SECURITY VAULT' on Gold Background Pattern (Sticker) - Set 8107
Parts: Technic, Disk
and have to rely on incomplete admin tools only. If those are in
the same state as the well bespoken seller tools, that explains a lot. Indeed
at the database level (to be more exact: at the data definition level), this
would simply be adding a rule triggered by an update on the packaging dimension
field.

[Items_ItemNr.OnChange]:
UPDATE Items SET Items.PackagingSize = :Ref.PackagingSize WHERE Items.Itemnr
LIKE :Ref.ItemNr & "pb*"

Thank you hpoort!

show up under "known color".

Niek.

Thanks for following up with this! I didn't explain that very well in my
first post.

The catalogue contains really thousands and thousands of items that could be

Russell, now that TLG owns BL you have a wealth of resources that you could have
used before asking the community to help.

TL;DR: why do you ask the BL (seller)community to fill in the gasps in your inventory
while BL/TLG could have this problem solved easily for thousands of parts (perhaps
90% of the parts that are missing packing dimensions).

Yes, this.

Asked for many times and (apparently) impossible to achieve.

On the bright side, whoever submits these hundreds of dimensions will get tons
of credit in the catalog!

now comes in reddish brown and has an element id of 6342958, how does one get
this added to the database? I've added it multiple times to my inventory,
but it will still not show up as available in that color (e.g. the drop down
menu does not list it in reddish brown.)

Did you add it just today? To my knowledge, those menus populate during the daily
maintenence.

Yes, just added today, I will try to have some patience.

I've also found other parts that do not have current element id and would
like to get them added as well. Please direct me to where to submit this info.

Submit new IDs in the Add or Change tab. Change Item: - Part

Items show up automatically when they are listed in the inventory for a set.
What set are these parts from?

IDK, got them in bulk from Lego

Also, how does one submit a photo for a new color?

Add or Change tab. Add Image: - Part.

I believe it is preferred that images are only listed for parts in known colors.

Done. Since this is a new known color now as the large image in my original post
is from lego.com

We depend a lot less on the dimensions of an element and primarily on the weight
in part-based selling. The problem arises when the element/part in the catalog
gets listed as volume based (not set, that makes sense) and automatic checkout
no longer works for that element, discouraging people from buying.

Since the team is just really starting to dig into the seller tools and seem
to be taking requests, please consider using different zones based on shippers
location when BL forces an element to the volume based shipping. It causes more
issues stateside (your primary market) by limiting sale of that element via auto-checkout
until dimensions are entered or the seller manually changes it back to weight
based.

We're all just trying to sling our brick as quickly and accurately as possible,
things like changing elements to volume without having dimensions makes that
more difficult. Thank you for your time.

Maybe it should be enforced that when setting an item to volume based, dimensions
are required.
On the other hand, sellers have been able (since 2017) to spot those items quite
simple and put in a request to add dimensions (they supply)
But I don't see an announcement that BL will turn all items to volume bases,
so I don't think that will have to worry you.

For me as, European seller, size does matter
And for me the wide range of items missing dimensions was/is holding me back
to turn on Instant Checkout. Sending an order as letter to the US is way cheaper
then sending it as parcel (1.55 vs 25.50), so that is not something you just
'eat' as seller.

Russel,
Thanks for the info and congrats to the team for implementing this.
It would be nice if you could easily filter the results.
I took a look and have 1566 lots that have no (or complete) dimensions.
What I also see is that there are many the same kind of items without dimensions.
So a lot of torsos (without arms, 973*), but I also see a lot of stickered items,
for example I have 73 1x4 tiles (2431*) with stickers that have no dimensions,
why don't those stickered items inherent there dimensions from the unstickered
'parent'.
A sticker (or print) will not make the peace larger, yes the sticker will ad
a very small dimension increase, but I don't think anyone is able to measure
that (with normal equipment).

All in all, expect a lot of dimension catalog requests from me in the coming
days

Thanks for the awesome update Russell! I'm looking forward to all the announcements
and especially more emails in the future. Keep up the great work!

I was wondering if the development team had thought about the differences between
European/Asian shipping requirements vs. USA and how that effects the order?

It has been a little over two months since we released Phase 1 of our new Packing
Dimensions feature.

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1263918

Now we have started on Phase 2 and the most critical part of that phase is giving
sellers the ability to quickly find items in their store inventory that are missing
Packing Dimensions. This is a feature that was asked for from day one of Instant
Checkout, and a few other folks have been asking about it since then too:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1058577
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1132871
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1137170
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1196661
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1239868
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1259818

That is 6 suggestions marked as Implemented today!

Essentially this is a companion to the "No Weight in Catalog" filter for your
store inventory. Any catalog items that are missing dimensions data will come
up in the search, including those pesky ones containing a NULL or ZERO value.

How is this different than the "Instant Checkout Unavailable" filter? That filter,
which has existed since 2017, will find items that won't make it through
Instant Checkout in your store. But dimensions are not required for Instant Checkout
unless the Packing Type is set to Volume Bound. So there is some overlap, but
the "No Packing Dim in Catalog" filter is specifically designed to help sellers
fill out catalog data.

We also updated the Store Management page and the Item Listing page with some
new language. And more is yet to come!

There are hundreds of stickered parts missing in the catalog because they are
usually not submitted with the set inventory. If you want to add some, please
have a look at this tutorial: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1191009

There are supposed to be studs on the raised 1x2 area in the back. Why is the
model in this catalog image without them?

Yep, that’s one bad render. And it’s used for 3 of the 5 colours.  It’s also
unfortunate it’s the default image

But, on the other hand, they are the official LEGO renders for these colours
(see Brickset: https://brickset.com/parts/design-30274 ).

I've a question about old baseplates (the ones that were actually brick-height).

I've this one (from its description):

*
700eX Brick 10 x 20 without Bottom Tubes, with '+' Cross Support (early Baseplate)
Parts: Brick {Green}
... but on my part it says "700ey"

Also, I have this one:

Part No: 700eD Name: Brick 10 x 20 with Bottom Tubes in Single Row Around Edge, with '+' Cross Support
*
700eD Brick 10 x 20 with Bottom Tubes in Single Row Around Edge, with '+' Cross Support
Parts: Brick {Light Gray}
... but on my part it says "700eH"

Any ideas?

Should I just list them as the items I've linked, but with the actual item
number in the description of my listing?

Thanks!

Maybe suggest adding those as alternate IDs?

We also changed the logic to only show the color name when the author specifies
it. We did this because the default color can be changed by a catalog admin,
so we want people to use the macro color code if they are specifying a color,
even if the color happens to be the current default color.

And a popup appears warning you if you didn’t specify a colour

(A bit surprising when you’re quoting a macro though: “er, I didn’t include a
macro!?”)

  Hello everyone,

In response to some voices we heard last year, we have released a tool to help
folks out with using the catalog macro tags in the Forum and system messages.
This custom macro is one of BrickLink's signature features, and you can see
them peppered everywhere in the Forum, particularly in catalog discussions.

A while back we introduced the ability to specify color for parts, and people
started using it even though they had to look up or remember the BrickLink color
number. The tool we released today helps with the lookup of the color and will
actually write the macro tag for you - no coding experience needed.

So today we were also able to mark a Forum suggestion as Implemented:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1215932

We also fixed a bug that wouldn't allow Gear macros to have color:

Gear No: bb1001 Name: Watch Part, Band Link - Standard without Rectangular Holes
