Colors

BrickLink maintains a Color Guide that shows all recognized colors, including Modulex colors. For practical reasons, color names do not always match the official LEGO color names and BrickLink does not recognize all colors released by the LEGO Group.

Only items in the Parts and Gear item types can be assigned colors.
"Known" Colors
"Known" colors for a part or gear item are based on inclusion in the BrickLink inventory system and will not appear unless the item exists in an inventory. The system will recognize up to 10 levels of inventory inclusions (for example, a subpart that appears in a part that appears in a minifigure that appears in a gear item that appears in a set). Known colors shown on catalog detail pages are based on real-time data. Known colors for other pages and features are cached and updated once daily.
Color Assignment
Parts are assigned colors as follows:

  • Sticker sheets and paper parts are assigned the N/A (Not Applicable) color.
  • Parts made from a plastic sheet - like sails or wings - are typically assigned the N/A (Not Applicable) color but may also be assigned to the dominant color, i.e. the color that is most prominent among all the colors printed on the part.
  • Cloth parts are assigned to the color of the cloth, not the printed pattern.
  • Multicolored parts - meaning part color and not pattern - with color differences that cannot be briefly described in the title are assigned the N/A color.
  • All other multicolored parts are assigned the most dominant color, ideally the least variable.
  • Assemblies are assigned the color of the base part, typically meaning the non-moving part of the assembly.
  • Minecraft animals and other large brick-built assemblies are assigned the N/A color if they contain parts in different colors.
  • In the absence of any obvious color or in disputable cases, the color of the base or bottommost part is assigned.

Gear items should only be assigned a color when the item is a solid color or one predominant color and the item exists in multiple colors within the same catalog entry.
