Okay, I think we've finally organized this thing. Check it out:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogListOld.asp?catType=S&catString=976.625.1132

We're not completely certain on what part inventories for sets like this
will contain:

Set No: bam2020 Name: Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2020 Parts
*
bam2020-1 (Inv) Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2020 Parts
26 Parts, 2020
Sets: LEGO Brand: LEGO Brand Store: Build-A-Minifigure
Marked for Deletion

but at a minimum it would be parts that only appear on Build-a-Minifigure stations
(likely not figures, though).

We encourage someone knowledgeable about Build-a-Minifigure parts to submit an
inventory so we can see what we're looking at. We also need set entries
with pictures for the missing blister packs and it would be nice to have photos
for the sets (like the one shown above) that were created to provide data for
orphaned parts.

  If that
is the case just put the old category in the item name field.

e.g.
Cone 2 x 2 Truncated (formerly Brick, Round)

Asking the site for any programmed changes is pretty much out. If we want this
we'll have to do it ourselves.

  Heck, you can even remove it after 6 months or so; just give sellers a chance
to adapt.

Yes, we'll try to put changes in titles this time around using the keyword
"formerly" and remove them six months later. That's a fair request. I can't
promise we'll do it for every single item, though . . . if we move games
from Gear to Sets, for example, the titles wouldn't change.

The main problem with modifying titles like this is that those things get stuck
in titles and never removed. Here's an item number change from five years
ago:

Part No: 853340cdb01 Name: Paper Cardboard Arch for Wedding Set 853340
*
853340cdb01 Paper Cardboard Arch for Wedding Set 853340
Parts: Paper

And there are others scattered throughout the catalog with no way (no keyword)
to locate them. But we'll have a complete list this time and updating the
titles in six months should therefore be simple. So there's no reason we
can't accommodate your request.

Thanks for suggesting it.

  Yep, got it, I'm just trying to avoid the situation we had last time when
things were postponed.

Oh, okay. I understand you now.

Will we move every single thing that needs to be moved this time around? I wish
I could say, "Yes, we will and this won't have to happen again." But honestly,
that's probably not the case since there're over 100,000 items in the
catalog.

But since you asked: last time went fairly well, so we'll try to put a greater
effort into getting more stuff done this time so we don't have to keep doing
this.

  I understand the catalog problem, but is it because large sellers have items
stored under catalog definitions?

Yes, that's correct. Teup explains it:

"The fact that parts are sometimes in a place where you didn't
expect it, will always remain. The cost of the change on the other hand would
be quite big, for sellers like me - both in terms of memory and in terms of storage.

If there would be significant changes, it could change my storage alot and cause
a domino effect where, in an extreme case of changing even parts like these,
I'd have to redesign my entire store layout and hope that it will all still
fit."

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1113085

Some stores are organized entirely by the BrickLink catalog and changes in the
catalog can have drastic effects on such storage systems.

  Thanks for the headsup! And I agree with yorbrick that it's ok if this takes
time.

It has taken time . . . 20 years of it. Categorizing items is a topic
that has been discussed going back nearly to the founding of the site.

With written category definitions finally official on the site for the first
time in 2020, the time has come for action. We took some action on October 1st,
moving over 500 items. Now we plan to take further action with the support of
the community.

  This is going to be a puzzle and quite a mess for me, and other catagory-based
sorters as well

Indeed it will be and I apologize for that. The "it will be inconvenient for
sellers" argument has meant that in the past parts have rarely been moved once
they landed in the catalog - even if the categorizations didn't make sense
in hindsight.

We're trying to minimize the inconvenience, but handing the next generation
of LEGO fans the same catalog we got is not fair. Because then they'll
complain that the catalog makes little sense in some areas. But they'll
get used to it and then complain when things are moved. And pass the same poorly-organized
catalog down to the generation following them. Someone has to end that
cycle.

Now that we have written category definitions our goal is to make a little more
sense of its organization. We're not moving things around because it's
fun, believe me.

  ) it's better as well to rip off the bandaid at once

I agree. It would be nice to start over and get everything perfect from the
start. Ain't the way the world works, though. Everything in life is a process.

  Is a month long enough to discuss the tiles/plates issues? Especially the shortest
month!

I think it is. It's already been discussed at length multiple times in the
forum, both recently and in the past. We've stayed in touch with the discussions
and are really not expecting much difficulty sorting out tiles and plates.

  And let's hope you get permissions
to make any sensible changes.

It isn't just me doing this. It's a community effort involving all of
us, including the rest of the catalog team. But yes, the site has no problems
with it.

It's pretty much exactly what we did on October 1st. Just different things
this time around.

We'll be opening public discussion on February 1st, 2021 for an additional
round of correcting mis-categorizations. The discussion will last through the
end of February.

We'll review internally during the month of March and the approved changes
will occur at the beginning of April.

We plan to address the issue of tiles/plates this time around and also several
issues we couldn't get to last time. No promises, but we're also hoping
to finally move brick-built games from Gear to Sets in response to numerous complaints
over the last decade or so.

do with BAM sets, parts, and figures.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Based on your feedback, these four catalog
entries are pending approval:

*
bam2018-1 (Inv) Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2018 Parts
17 Parts, 2018
Sets: LEGO Brand: LEGO Brand Store: Build-A-Minifigure

Set No: bam2019 Name: Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2019 Parts
*
bam2019-1 (Inv) Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2019 Parts
40 Parts, 2019
Sets: LEGO Brand: LEGO Brand Store: Build-A-Minifigure
Marked for Deletion

Set No: bam2020 Name: Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2020 Parts

bam2020-1 (Inv) Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2020 Parts
26 Parts, 2020
Sets: LEGO Brand: LEGO Brand Store: Build-A-Minifigure
Marked for Deletion

Set No: bam2021 Name: Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2021 Parts
*
bam2021-1 Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) 2021 Parts
2021
Sets: LEGO Brand: LEGO Brand Store: Build-A-Minifigure
Marked for Deletion

The catalog entries will enter the catalog as marked for deletion and serve only
to provide catalog data for BAM items.

We'll take additional feedback for a short time. If no one sees any problems
with doing things this way, we'll approve these four catalog entries and
they can then be inventoried.

  Why can't BL just import all new parts from LEGO automatically (just like
RB and BS) and attach a label to them with something like "still to be considered/weighed/photographed/measured
by Bricklink's catalog administrators"?

I understand it's frustrating that the catalog isn't updated more frequently.
Some thoughts:

Rebrickable and Brickset aren't marketplaces.

Adding parts to our catalog before they're actually released enables multiple
problems.

The catalog team doesn't have physical access to new parts.

Of the activities you mentioned, we can only consider submissions. We can't
weigh, photograph, or measure things we don't have. It's true that
all of us have personal LEGO part collections, but we don't get new parts
when they're released - we have to buy them in sets like everyone else.

BrickLink is a community effort.

It sounds like you want to sacrifice what BrickLink has always been to gain convenience.
If the catalog is not updated with new items in a timely manner, the community
(including the catalog team) is responsible. Instead of shifting that responsibility
to others, why not accept it?

Why have you not submitted these new parts to the catalog with renders or photos
so that we can have them ready to go on January 1st when the new wave of sets
is released?

Be careful what you ask for.

If you were to keep pushing, you might eventually convince the LEGO Group to
come in and take over the catalog from the community. Your success may (or certainly
may not - don't be so sure of it) give you the convenience you want, but
you will also have succeeded in giving away the catalog and the community's
say-so in how it's kept.

Do you really want the LEGO Group running the catalog? If you do, then I can
assure you with complete confidence that you don't know the LEGO Group as
well as you imagine.

  Buyers who are reading reviews on the aforementioned sites (but also NewElementary)
would have a better experience on BL(XP)

I don't know about you, friend, but it's hard for me to imagine anyone
having a good experience on XP.

  Since BL is now owned by TLG I really, really don't get this!

I'll explain it simply: a year after they bought the site, TLG is keeping
their word and allowing the community to retain control of the catalog.

I'd suggest glancing through this page:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1568

See if it offers guidance on how to categorize this specific part.

If it does: in which category should the part go?

If it doesn't: how should the Help page be updated to account for
this part?

These guidelines are imperfect, but they are what we use now and are a vast improvement
over what we used for the first 20 years of BrickLink:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=170

  4)Should the cargo-loading Cranky character also be included in a sub group?

There are no guidelines regarding this issue.

  5)Also should the character assembly regardless of sub group have a consistent
theme part id name such as crs***?

There are no guidelines regarding this issue.

If you can make sense of them, here are the guidelines:

pb0 and there are some that get added the c0X instead.

There are some printed ones that have both.

This is probably a duplicate entry for this item and could be merged with it:

*
crssprt01pb52 Brick 1 x 8 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Red 'FIRE STATION' Thin Pattern

Before we do that, try contacting the sellers who have the item for sale and
checking to see if any of them have an alternate version.

For this one, also contact sellers. One seller has an actual photo of the part
for sale showing the version you describe.

That can be merged with this:

Part No: crssprt01pb71 Name: Brick 1 x 8 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Red 'POMPIERI' Pattern
*
crssprt01pb71 Brick 1 x 8 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Red 'POMPIERI' Pattern

catalog:

Set No: 2325 Name: PreSchool Basic Building Set
*
2325-1 (Inv) PreSchool Basic Building Set
8 Parts, 1985
Sets: DUPLO: Basic Set

I've discovered unknown sets before, so the thrill of discovery is not exactly
foreign to me. But I must say the excitement hasn't become stale yet.

Just thought I'd share.

Not anymore.

No.

Naw, that's:

The other is probably a prototype part from an unreleased set or sets that wandered
out into the public. Guessing, of course.

  I thought the rule was that what LEGO calls the figure is the correct name for
the BL catalogue.

Not to interject myself into your discussion with Marek, but I'll just mention
the rules for figure names:

From: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=179

Minifigs - Minifigs should be primarily named by either role, character
name, or significant (and usually common) characteristic of dress. Where known,
the LEGO character name is used. Additional text is added to distinguish multiple
versions of the same character. Character-named minifigs often do not need to
be described with other attributes such as headgear, color of legs, etc. Figure
titles should not include set, book, or gear numbers; these are only allowed
in the figure title until that figure is added to an inventory and must then
be removed.

The rules are rather vague and confusing.

other type of plastic and reduced opacity?

I'm honestly not entirely sure we can guide you on this issue.

Yes, I would probably be dissatisfied as a buyer if I got the yellowed parts
in your picture. But there are a number of existing colors that vary, some rather
significantly (dark red, pearl gold, etc.). TLG is fairly careful about certain
aspects of their products, but color definitely ain't one of them.

I think the best thing you could do in this situation is include a note in your
item-for-sale listings briefly describing the differences in appearance. Or,
what might be better: list them separately.

I don't think there's anything we can do as CAs to resolve this issue.
It would be highly impractical to add new colors to our palette to account for
unintentional quality variations.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there is any requirement

  The difference between a plate, modified and a tile, modified should be cleared
up a bit better imo. For instance, these two pieces are in different categories:

Part No: 88646 Name: Tile, Modified 3 x 4 with 4 Studs in Center
*
88646 Tile, Modified 3 x 4 with 4 Studs in Center
Parts: Tile, Modified

Part No: 6576 Name: Plate, Modified 4 x 8 with Studs in Center
*
6576 Plate, Modified 4 x 8 with Studs in Center
Parts: Plate, Modified

That doesn't exactly make any sense

Absolutely agree. We just didn't get to those this time around. We're
trying to make more sense out of things without making too many people (sellers
and BL management both) piqued by the changes.

If the world doesn't end as a result of the changes (and it hasn't yet)
we plan to do it again and hopefully we'll be able to get to some or most
of the issues you brought up in this post. Moving parts again is item 30 on
our catalog roadmap:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

  Since you moved

Part No: 6091  Name: Slope, Curved 2 x 1 x 1 1/3 with Recessed Stud
*
6091 Slope, Curved 2 x 1 x 1 1/3 with Recessed Stud
Parts: Slope, Curved
to slope, curved don't you think

Part No: 67810  Name: Slope, Curved 2 x 2 x 1 1/3 Corner Round with Recessed Stud
*
67810 Slope, Curved 2 x 2 x 1 1/3 Corner Round with Recessed Stud
Parts: Slope, Curved
deserves
to be moved to slope, curved as well?

Yep. But remember your concern that the list of moved parts was not conclusive?
That's why this part wasn't moved this time around - because it missed
getting on the list and I didn't want to just start moving things after the
fact.

  If items like this are a cylinder

Part No: 86500  Name: Cylinder Hemisphere 4 x 4
*
86500 Cylinder Hemisphere 4 x 4
Parts: Cylinder

Part No: 30208 Name: Cylinder Hemisphere 4 x 4 Multifaceted
*
30208 Cylinder Hemisphere 4 x 4 Multifaceted
Parts: Cylinder
shouldn't parts like
this be also

Part No: 24132  Name: Container, Faceted, 4 x 4 x 1 2/3, Dragon Egg Top
*
24132 Container, Faceted, 4 x 4 x 1 2/3, Dragon Egg Top
Parts: Container

Part No: 13754  Name: Container, Faceted 4 x 4 x 1 2/3, Alien Pod Section
*
13754 Container, Faceted 4 x 4 x 1 2/3, Alien Pod Section
Parts: Container
or maybe vice versa?

I think so, yes.

I'm still not sure the exact difference between an aircraft part and a cockpit
part. Apparently these are aircrafts

Part No: 11295 Name: Aircraft Fuselage Forward Bottom Curved 6 x 8
*
11295 Aircraft Fuselage Forward Bottom Curved 6 x 8
Parts: Aircraft

Part No: 87611 Name: Aircraft Fuselage Forward Bottom Curved 6 x 10 with 3 Holes
*
87611 Aircraft Fuselage Forward Bottom Curved 6 x 10 with 3 Holes
Parts: Aircraft
and these are cockpits

Part No: 42021  Name: Cockpit 8 x 6 x 2 Curved
*
42021 Cockpit 8 x 6 x 2 Curved
Parts: Cockpit

Part No: 47406  Name: Cockpit 10 x 6 x 2 Curved
*
47406 Cockpit 10 x 6 x 2 Curved
Parts: Cockpit
Seems unnecessarily confusing.

Agree.

  While on the topic of aircraft parts this is an
aircraft

Part No: 87615 Name: Aircraft Fuselage Aft Section Curved Top 6 x 10
*
87615 Aircraft Fuselage Aft Section Curved Top 6 x 10
Parts: Aircraft
however, these are a windscreens

Part No: x224  Name: Windscreen 8 x 6 x 2 Curved Sloped Sides
*
x224 Windscreen 8 x 6 x 2 Curved Sloped Sides
Parts: Windscreen

Part No: 45705  Name: Windscreen 10 x 6 x 2 Curved
*
45705 Windscreen 10 x 6 x 2 Curved
Parts: Windscreen

The aft section wasn't designed for use as a windscreen and I don't think
it was ever used as such. It doesn't come in any transparent colors, either.
I'd probably tend not to agree on this.

  This is a wedge

Part No: 32739  Name: Wedge 4 x 6 x 2/3 Double
*
32739 Wedge 4 x 6 x 2/3 Double
Parts: Wedge
and these are slopes

Part No: 32083  Name: Slope 45 6 x 4 Double
*
32083 Slope 45 6 x 4 Double
Parts: Slope

Part No: 30180  Name: Slope 45 10 x 2 x 2 Double
*
30180 Slope 45 10 x 2 x 2 Double
Parts: Slope

I'd say they're all three slopes.

  This is not a round plate

Part No: 39613 Name: Plate, Round 3 x 3 Heart
*
39613 Plate, Round 3 x 3 Heart
Parts: Plate, Round
It is heart shaped. It should be in the
plate, modified section.

Haven't looked at this issue closely, but agree that there are classification
problems here. We moved over 500 parts and figured that was plenty for the first
time around.

  Maybe the tile
or food section?

Part No: 25893 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Bar Handle on Short Stem
*
25893 Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Bar Handle on Short Stem
Parts: Plate, Round

Part No: 53119 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Horizontal Swirl / Twist
*
53119 Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Horizontal Swirl / Twist
Parts: Plate, Round

Part No: 15470 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Vertical Swirl / Twist
*
15470 Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Vertical Swirl / Twist
Parts: Plate, Round

We can look at these next project. Have you taken a look at our relatively new
category definitions page?

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1568

Part No: 11610 Name: Cone 1 x 1 Inverted with Bar
*
11610 Cone 1 x 1 Inverted with Bar
Parts: Cone
At this point I don't think
it should be in the food category. Fits more as a cone in my eyes.

I'd probably agree. Cone with bar.

  Back again to what's the definition between a plate and a tile, these are
listed under tile, round but they have studs on them

Part No: 18674 Name: Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud
*
18674 Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud
Parts: Tile, Round

Part No: 32627 Name: Tile, Round 4 x 4 with 2 Hollow Studs
*
32627 Tile, Round 4 x 4 with 2 Hollow Studs
Parts: Tile, Round

Part No: 6177 Name: Tile, Round 8 x 8 with 4 Studs in Center
*
6177 Tile, Round 8 x 8 with 4 Studs in Center
Parts: Tile, Round

We didn't go through plates or tiles at all, I don't think. They are
a mess. We still haven't completely finished with bricks or slopes yet,
either. It will take some time to get all these sorted out. The important thing
is that the sorting is finally happening.

Many of your requests concern part variants, which are a contentious issue that
BrickLink does not handle well at all. We hope to have a programming change
that will allow us to more effectively handle variants in set inventories, but
until then (if there ever is a then) I don't think any of us are too eager
to shuffle variants endlessly in and out of inventories.

The Duplo category had 573 entries and was unwieldy to browse. Today we created
a new category titled Duplo, Building and moved 169 parts into the new
category (leaving behind 404 of the original 573 entries).

The definition of the new category is:

For Duplo items that are part of habitable structures such as walls, roofs,
windows, and doors, not including building accessories.

This change will make it easier for current and future Duplo fans to locate items
and was also recorded here:

  I cannot begin to express how frustrated these changes have made me.

I'm sorry to hear that you've experienced so much frustration regarding
these changes, Pete. As the person who conceived and executed the project, if
anyone owes you an apology it's me.

  I do appreciate the streamlining of the catalog however, I myself tried to contribute
to that the last time I sorted through used inventory about 5 years ago. That
seemed to fall on deaf ears as every one of my catalog change requests was denied,
even though I had many valid changes.

The catalog management has completely changed during the last five years. If
you're still interested in contributing, you may find us more receptive now.

  My biggest frustration with this whole ordeal is that there has literally been
NO COMMUNICATION about these changes.

Unfortunately, I could not have done more than I did. CAs have no way to mass-email
members. I used the channels I had available to communicate the changes.

I believe the site may be working on improving things in this area . . . but
the site is always "working" on something, as you know. To avoid frustration
for sellers the catalog has remained unchanged in many ways for many years.
Now we're trying to work on that.

We could wait for the site to provide some form of notification for sellers,
but time is passing. Errors and chaotic systems become ever more entrenched
while the site works on - well, whatever the site works on. In fact, the reason
we're having this conversation is because things weren't properly done
many years ago (written category definitions, for example).

  How is there no communication to sellers about these changes,
this really is inexcusable.

I agree, but cannot change this. The only alternative to making progress with
better organizing the catalog is to do nothing at all. This philosophy led to
your other complaint above: every one of my catalog change requests was denied

  A simple email or an area on our profile that shows
parts that have changed categories in your store would have been beyond helpful.

This will require programming changes from the site. They have a rock-solid
track record of providing this service quickly and effectively, so . . .

  I see the list posted on this thread and that is at least a little helpful, but
I have no idea if it is an exhaustive list or not.

Yes, it is a complete list. We've had numerous requests to add to the list
(meaning requests to move additional items) and the requests were not approved.
In spite of that, members can still request category changes and have them approved
- several requests are pending approval right now.

  I would appreciate a way
to know everything that has changed, otherwise I will have to pour through the
change log over days to try to figure out what goes where now.

I attached a picture of the change log showing how to filter it for easier use.
Hopefully that will cut down on the time needed to see the category changes
that have been recently made for parts.

Again, I wish things were better all the way around, but CAs can only affect
so much. In an effort to avoid making no progress at all, we're trying to
do the best we can with what we have.

I don't know this for certain, but I strongly suspect someone pre-BrickLink

did the original numbering.

Search for all parts and order them by item number, up. It should become evident
that these are numbers somewhat randomly assigned to parts by fans prior to BrickLink's
use of bb* numbers.

On item numbers, BTW, we got shut down pretty quickly when we suggested introducing
order to the chaos of BL's literally hundreds of discrete systems of item
numbering. For example, here's something I posted privately regarding the
numbering of figures:

  I count 68 distinct numbering systems as follows:
