I wonder if the original submitter of the inventory even had ones that had a
square hole. They may have only looked at the part number on them that said 66906
and added that one without actually checking the holes. It would make sense because
the set cannot be built with the square hole version. I think we should remove
the square hole version from the inventory completely.

Did you build one of the specific models in the instructions that needs 6 of
these? Maybe I missed it but I don't see 6 being used anywhere.
Thanks for any extra info.

It means that that part looks the same but has a different stud type.
In your example only comes with but there are three
other minifigs that have a head that looks the same but with a different stud

The first letter after the part number for minifig heads indicates the stud type:

| As some have already mentioned, we are presently working to improve the way the
site handles dimensions. The first step in the project will allow users to submit
packaging dimensions (which henceforth will be called "packing dimensions") through
the normal catalog upload forms.
These dimensions will be displayed on the catalog detail page. For parts, we
will leave the stud dimensions where they are and the packing dimensions will
be shown underneath, in centimeters (or inches, if that is how you have your
preferences set up).
On the catalog upload forms, the dimensions will be entered in centimeters. Users
will accumulate catalog credits for uploading packing dimensions data.
This project is currently underway.
|
So we are moving from the current millimeters to centimeters? Does that
mean all current measurements will be restated simply by a factor of 10? Are
there controls in place to ensure:
1. that this conversion is handled properly?;
2. that both inventory views are updated at the same time to ensure that custom
and catalogue dimensions for all items in seller inventories are correctly converted
to centimeter?;
3. that both inventory views display correctly in future?
4. That seller shipping methods and restrictions are updated automatically?
5. That you stress test catalogue items in carts first to make sure that the
correct answers are given for such carts?
6. That all current carts and open orders are not impacted with a change which
would make it impossible to continue with the order or having to redo the cart
entirely?
If the above cannot be done, it might be better to keep the standard as millimeters
I think you should also have the catalogue admins set the standards of how the
measurements should be taken prior to giving them the responsibility of approving
member requests for changes and ensure that the community is made aware of these
standards. It serves no purpose to make it easier to make submissions and then
3 years from now, we need a catalogue project again to fix everything back to
some defined standard.
Some standards:
The level of precision (should be 2 decimals in mm and 3 if you really are going
to cm)
How foldable and parts such as strings are measured;
How parts with two possible packing methods supplied by TLG are measured (eg
string loose and string wound around the cardboard insert);
How minifigures are measured;
How items in cardboard sleeves are measured when included with minifigures or
other parts;
How boxes are measured;
Standardise the measurement of decorated parts;
Automatically add measurements for new decorated parts form the standard measurement;
Automatically apply dimensions when variants are split;
When an item is defaulted to weight and when it is defaulted to volume;
Define the standard for weight and volume default if these default settings are
to be fixed by users at the time of submission;
How to determine the x y and z sides so that dimensions are displayed correctly
(I know it does not make any difference to actual volume calculations, but it
looks a bit neater if all parts are 8 x 8 x 16 and not some at 8 x 16 x 8 or
16 x 8 x 8)
Etc.

The LEGO render shows a Medium Nougat mane with Nougat ears, so we know what
it is supposed to be.
Also, I just went and checked my son's. This is not a dual-molded part. The

It looks like the image that is in the catalog for the mane does not have the

| | It's a moot point now, since this is actually being implemented, but my point
is that when adding part sizes, doing that by stud and brick height is not easy
in most cases or practical compared to standard measurements. ie. sticking a
ruler next to a part and measuring it's height. The conversion to studs and
brick heights should be on the server side, not the human input side.
|
It is just as easy to stick a brick next to a part and count the studs as it
is to put a ruler next to a part and measure it.
Given that only one measurement of size should be used where possible for a particular
function, and how easy it is to determine the size of the majority of bricks,
plates, and other parts by just looking at them, then the studs as the visual
dimensions should (and will be) retained. The system scale and packing scale
are two different things. Of course, there are other scales in use too. DUPLO
is also measured in studs but this time DUPLO studs. So a DUPLO 2x2 brick is
still 2x2x1 in studs, the same as a system 2x2 brick. The difference is that
the user is expected to know that DUPLO studs are different to system studs.
|
Yes, I agree, placing a piece across studs is pretty easy, although not very
accurate. It is better to start off accurate and then round up or down to stud
length on the server side. However, brick height is not that easy, even on the
human side. Now you're getting into very inaccurate measurements and guesstimating
when dealing with partial brick height. Height is especially easier with standard
measurements.
|
I find measuring parts in brick height quite easy, use a pile of bricks with
three plates on the top. Measurements are then accurate to 1/3 a brick height
which is good enough for most parts as that is the accuracy that they are quoted
to.
For non-brick parts two measurements are sometimes quoted as needed, but the
cm dimensions don't go into the dimensions field but into the name. For example:
Telling these two apart if you only have one of them is difficult, even with
a ruler.
It makes sense to have them in the name here because the size is often very different
to the packaging dimensions, and also sometimes you need to know a length in
studs or in cm depending on what you are doing with it.
|
You seem very opposed to the idea of using international standards of measurement
for user input or just playing devil's advocate. I'm not sure why, but
I'm sure that anything I say will not convince you otherwise. So let's
leave
it at that.
|
Not at all, for packaging they make sense. But for describing part sizes then
studs are better.

by default when browsing stores and similar. Basically, making the wanted list
not effect views in other areas of the platform until I'm ready for it and
'activate' it or turn it on.
|
I have a "Wanted List" which is actually where I move my other wanted lists'
items once I've ordered them, so I'd really appreciate to be able to
disable this list when browsing stores.
|
That is actually a really good idea! I usually end up deleting things out of
my wanted list/deleting the lists when I'm done, but it would also be interesting
to me to keep a record of my wanted lists for future checking, and I had never
thought of doing that before! Definitely agree that turning it off for browsing
stores would be a must though.

There is already that function, when searching you can check which lists you
want to search for.
|
As with many quality of life improvements, yes, there is incomplete functionality
half built around this. However, if you have more than just a few wanted lists
and you regularly browse stores, especially by wanted list, you have to go and
turn off each wanted list individually in every story that you use. It's
a pain and a mess, and being able to deactivate each wanted list at the source
would be a major QOL improvement for me, at least.

That's great if I'm using advanced search. If I'm NOT using advanced

not possible to filter sellers like that.

in most cases or practical compared to standard measurements. ie. sticking a
ruler next to a part and measuring it's height.
|
|
|
|
So let's
leave
it at that.

This is exactly what I'm asking for. I'm aware that I can change them
for my own store, but I'm thinking of the greater good. I want to change
them for everyone using the change item tool, but it's too much hassle right
now because it's not in metric or imperial.
|
The change item page sets the dimensions of the part in studs. People use studs
for measurements when building, not mm or inches. If I've got a 2x16 plate
and I put a 2x2 tile on one end, a 2x2 tile on the other and I want to work out
which part(s) I need to tile the rest, I can quickly determine that I need 2x12
worth of tiles. I don't want to have to get a ruler out to measure the gap
in mm, then work out what parts have the correct size to fit. I can look at the
part, and the studs act as a measuring device.
Whereas the shipping sizes are in mm, as the volume of packages in more common
units are necessary.

will leave the stud dimensions where they are and the packing dimensions will

|

I don't know if that tool actually submits a request to change an item's
packing dimensions - I think it is just to change the dimensions in studs/brick
height

You can stop spinning.
First you have to understand that you are mixing up two sets of dimensions.
There are stud dimensions, which are shown on the catalog page, and that won't
change, shipping also has nothing to do with that (although I think somewhere
along they were used to set initial shipping dimensions).
The dimensions you want to see in a 'normal' manner are the actual shipping
dimensions that are used to calculate shipping options. And they are already
in 'normal' standards, namely, as Wildchicken pointed out, in mm and
grams.
You can change those dimensions in your own inventory, that way they count only
for you. You could also make a post in the Packaging Dimension topic to let an
admin set the dimensions for the whole of Bricklink.
You can't however set them through the change item form (yet?).

change the dimensions of parts to an international standard? Metric, Imperial,
I don't care, as long as more than just the users of this site know what
they mean and I can buy a ruler at the dollar store that measures them.
It would be a great help for shipping, especially when parts over a certain dimension
can't be shipped via a certain package size. I know, I can't believe
Canada Post doesn't convert bricks to centimetres, what snobs.
I hate to say this but brick owl is good for one thing, they list their measurements

So in conclusion, please, please, please change the way parts are measured in
Bricklink from studs and bricks to centimetres, millimetres, or even inches (counting

Thanks for your consideration!

Wait a second… You can display packaging dimensions in bricks and studs?!
Seriously, though. All of my packaging dimensions are displayed in millimeters
and weight is displayed in grams. I don't know what happened on your end
that made them show up in bricks and studs or if there is even a setting for
that. Perhaps it's a Canadian thing?
Or are you referring to the names of the parts? That is unlikely to change any
time soon as it is much easier to refer to parts by their dimensions in bricks
and studs than my their dimensions in inches or millimeters, however convenient
that may be for packing and shipping purposes.
|
Good point! I'm talking when you want to make a catalog change.
|
Good suggestion. Measuring dimensions in bricks and studs makes sense for basic
parts such as bricks and plates, but not for small parts such as minifigure accessories
and non-system elements such as technic.
However, it's just a simple matter of unit conversion. I always remember
that one stud equals 5/16 of an inch and a plate is 1/8 of an inch. For the rest
of the world, that's approximately 7.9 and 3.2 mm.
|
You make my point exactly. First, we already have universal systems of measurement,
why convert to a system of measurement that only exists on this site? Second,
converting creates a barrier for people like me who just want to update a part
size, not learn a new language. Lastly, I'm a perfectionist and this "approximately"
business is for the birds. That's why hardware stores sell rulers, so we
can know exactly how long something is.
|
When it comes to brick names, I prefer 2x2 brick to cuboid 16.0 mm x 16.0 mm
x 9.6 mm, and that is before you start adding terms for modifications. And based
on that, one measuring system makes sense, so not mixing studs with inches and
mm. Where necessary other units can be used when clarification is needed, for
example capes and strings, elastics, wheels. For torsos, hair, minifig accessories
and so on, I don't think dimensions are needed, just shipping dimensions.

You can actually do it yourself pretty easily! It took me a few minutes to work
through each step the first time, but by the third time it was really easy and
quick.
Here's the link to the help page for making an Inventory Change Request:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=215
And here's the link to make one: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChange.asp
You'll want to enter the set number (41288-1, don't forget the -1), then
put 1 under Number of Entries. On the next page, you'll want to choose Add,
ignore the Inv Item ID field, put the part number under Item No, find the correct
Color ID on this page (https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp), enter the
quantity into the Qty field, choose Counterpart under the dropdown menu for Type,
and ignore the Match ID field. Then you're done and you can verify the changes!
|
I get an error saying that the piece is not in the catalog, but if you search
the part ID ( 98835pb022) it pulls up. Am I doing something wrong?
|
Huh. I see it in the catalog as well. I've never encountered that error before.
Perhaps, looking at the way you copy-pasted it in your message, you accidentally
put an extra space before the start of the part number and that caused the error?
The only way for me to check was to submit the Inventory Change Request myself,
so I did that, and it went through, so no need for you to submit it now. Thanks
for trying, though! Next time I hope it'll work better.

|

| Don't know what you have exactly, but what is driving the 25% - 35% of the
set selling price to complete? Seems high to me for 21 sets.
You can buy the missing pieces and sell the sets and sell them without the minifigs.
Sets from that era will sell even without the minifigs. I am selling off a part
of my collection and most of the sets are from the '80s - early '90s.
Some of my sets are missing some or all of the minifigs but they do sell.
You could even try selling them now as is and see what happens.
In Inventories, Bromwich writes:
| Hi everyone,
This is my first post on here, so apologies if I get the format wrong.
I recently won a large lot of loose Lego at auction, (for too much money), and
have been working my way sorting through it all.
What hooked me was that it came with 30+ instruction sheets, all from the late
80's and early 90's, plus the box for 6542 Launch and Load and 6286 Pirate
Schooner.
Having now spent a couple of surprisingly enjoyable weeks cleaning and picking
out bits, I have 21 near complete sets (minus any Minifigures), but also normally
missing a couple of special pieces.
My question is - What should I do with it now?!
should I (A) looking to buy all of the missing parts (currently 215, inc. minifigs
across 21 sets) to complete the set and sell as 100% complete.
Overall it seems that I need to spend 25-35% of the set selling price to complete.
Or (B) part out and save myself the time of buying the parts to sell them on?
Part of me feels that it would be nice to complete them, but it will also take
a lot longer to get things up and running.
Note - given their age there are also a fair few discoloured parts which I would
want to de-yellow before selling.
All lot of the left over basic part will just join my son's collection.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
P.S. Not sure what happened to the photos flipping!

| My advice: do NOT sell de-yellowed parts, unless its stated in the comments.
And even then I wouldnt...
They will yellow again after some time (and not like they were before the treatment,
they get WORSE), leaving a very unhappy buyer and at that time it's too late
for him to complain.
Greetings,
Koen

I'm only checking as the door you are requesting to change it to is a different

| I always part sets out in stockroom A, B or C. In the remarks field I enter the
set number, the quantity of sets I'm parting out and the date e.g. 7x1234
011421 which can be helpful later. When I've completed sorting the 7 sets
sets physically, I can also at that time check if the quantities in stockroom
B match what I've in the actually parted out sets. Here it is helpful to
search on the text you entered in the remarks field and the stockroom you used
to part out in.
Let's say I part set 1234 out in stockroom B. Afterwards I go to the inventory
page and search for all parts in set 1234 by entering the set number in the field
titled "Parts from Set:".
https://www.bricklink.com/inventory.asp
The resulting lots should be all lots that include parts that appear in set 1234.
I subsequently combine the lots manually which is a little cumbersome but it
gives me more control. At the time where I combine lots, I also concatenate the
remarks fields. Thus I always know where the parts originated from. I may start
out by just combining some of the lots and add those to my store front.

@Peregrinator - 25-35% is quite high and annoyingly it's because the few
parts missing are the most important (i.e. the sails are missing on the Pirate
Schooner, which are near £300).
I'm tempted to buy some custom sails (still £50) for the Schooner just so
it feels right. (if that's allowed)
There are a few train sets that are 100% complete so there's no reason to
break them up.
@Ninepartsred - Thanks for the advice.
The percentages are against an appropriate Bricklink selling price, as it's
been difficult to give cost per set given I bought so much at the same time.
I guess if I don't buy the missing parts (for £X), then I just sell the incomplete
set for £X less.
What is the best way for me to check the total part price (per set), without
including what I'm missing?
|
Yeah, some of my smaller lots have dented the profit margins of my stock as a
whole.
Unless someone knows a different method, I think you'll have to go through
the part out process and uncheck the parts you don't have. You can see the
total value one step before you confirm and it goes into your inventory.
One thing to note though.. the total you see won't necessarily be what you'll
make as there will be a lot of common parts which may never sell.

You can't sell non-Lego on BrickLink if that's what you're asking.

Part out the set, delete the parts you're missing, then "Verify Items" (but
don't go to the "Upload" step)

Technically this set contains 7252 Droid Tri-Fighter. As such, and per the instructions,
I think it would make sense to have the stickered parts from the Tri-Fighter
included. I will also make a request to add the Vulture Droid stickers.

Once there is another "lot" listing, I don't think that you can combine them
(I couldn't find anything). I know when you part a set out you can use that
if it finds an existing lot to combine them together, but you'll have to
track the parts at that time which for me was just as annoying.
What I've done is part the set out to the stock room and then when I'm
ready to move everything to my inventory, promote it all at once. This creates
duplicates, but if you use your inventory menu, search for "non-unique" items
and you will see only the duplicates. You can then manually add the lots together
and delete the dups. It's still kind of annoying, but at least you can clean
up your lots.
|
You can also consolidate lots when parting out and specify that the new stockroom
option is to be used -- of course, this has the effect of moving your current
inventory into stockroom along with the newly-parted out set.

BrickLink has minimal inventory management unfortunately What you can do though
is use BrickStock for this. If you're doing it on a larger scale, that's
probably your best bet.
