I feel the same way about dual molded arms
There are reasons for not separating them, mainly for new buyers not knowing

I feel like there is no real definition for the term decorated that should be
defined. As far I am concerned, dual color molding is not really decorating.
Any thoughts?

There are no real definitions for a number of things and we're working right
now to change that.
As for dual-molded parts, I would say that the appearance of the part
is what is important. If a part appears to have a pattern, then BrickLink should
probably treat it as a patterned part regardless of the production method.
This is because when anyone is looking for an item, I imagine they would want
a clean distinction between plain parts and multicolored or patterned parts.
That's not to say we couldn't distinguish dual-molded parts in some
way, either with titles or item numbers. For example, we already distinguish
patterned parts that have stickers using the part title.
Oddly enough, at least for some patterned parts where the production is with
molding, we don't identify the part as a patterned part:
But sometimes we do:
Which makes me wonder what the catalog means when it uses the word "embossed:"

step is enacting solid guidelines. Right now we're working on these two

I would certainly like dual-molded differentiated from printed or stickered.
The additional wrinkle is there is no way of knowing when a part is dual-molded
or not.
For example these legs
come in dual molded and printed version of the shoes, but BL did not implement
the differentiation even though I brought it up in the past. The quality is vastly
different and hence why Lego decided to start doing dual molding of minifig/minidoll
parts

I have deleted my previous requests on this set and am doing it a different way.
- On the blue and red bricks, this variance is what I have found when I parted out two sets before and again when I parted out 1 yesterday.
- I was missing the trans-red slopes before and again and last time I didn't know what to balance them with, but this time the blue 41855 (and maybe/probably last time as well, I don't know) were in the bag with the regular parts, not the floor sweepings, so I think they alternate each other.
-I will also record here that when I parted out two sets before, I only got 2 yellow 3005pe1, not 4 and this time when I parted out one set I didn't get any of them. I suspect that this piece belongs in the extras, but I have no handy proof. I am making these requests from work and it now occurs to me that I may have pictures of the unopened bags last time that would shed some light on this. I will check later.

So it seems some copies came indeed with reddish brown stairs. Maybe LEGO did
not have enough dark orange stairs in stock and replaced them with reddish brown

If we had perfect knowledge, I am sure we would find that other sets had light
gray also. But most of those sets were opened and built and then went to garage
sales and trash cans. The ones that actually get opened and investigated are
a small sample. I have a vintage set on the way that has never been inventoried
before. And plenty of other sets haven't been verified or haven't been
parted out a lot by people who correct inventories.
Manufacturing pieces is one operation and packing sets is another operation and
the people or machines who pack the sets use the parts they have on hand.
It is clear from sets like 9797 and the Star Destroyer that set packers considered
LG and LBG to be the interchangeable until the time came that there were no more
LG parts in the bins. Hygrotus pulled a variant piece from a new set last year
that hadn't been seen in a new set in something like a decade. 32064c should
phase out somewhere around 2005, but Turez found one in a 2008 set. Because
some facility that packs sets still had some.
Frequently when entering PCCs on new pieces, I find something like (I am making
these specific numbers up!) most new PCCs we've been entering for months
are like 6301111 and 6301333 and then a new hair piece comes out with 6271222.
Sets are designed long before they are announced and released and there is no
reason to assume that a piece that didn't get released until 2006 wasn't
produced a few years earlier in some quantities. Some of the Dots elements were
made for Dots and then they decided not to release Dots and some of the pieces
made their way into sets last year. Then they decided to release Dots a year
later. They used those pieces in other sets because they had been manufactured
and were just sitting there. Similarly, LG 56145 may have been produced for
a set that didn't get released and then when they started making the piece
in LBG they used up the LG too. Or maybe when they develop a new part that they
want to start putting in sets, they start manufacturing it in the most obvious
colors, but by the time a designer put it in a set, they had changed over the
LBG, but still had the LG. We really don't know. But I promise you that
I can tell the difference between them and I found what I found. I have not
parted out 20 9797s. But I have parted out 8 of them from 5 different sources.
I have found all 3 heads and both kinds of hats and both kinds of light grays.

and Educational. In my opinion, this is not a new blue color, it is a marriage
of plastic (I do not sell such parts).
|
This is a color that collectors refer to as "Brittle Blue". Do a search for it
in the forums and you will learn all about it.
| I don't think we should continue the argument. This is a question of the
difference between my experience and yours. I think the bricklink database administrator
already has enough information to make the right decision.
|
There never was an argument, was there? The history of LEGO encompasses a lot
more than just the Dacta sets, so you have to have a broader knowledge about
where they fit in the scheme of things. This history includes sets including
mixes of the grays long after the color switch in 2004, the fact that Dacta sets
are sometimes dumping grounds for leftover parts, etc.
| If necessary, I can send a request to LEGO to see if the 9797 set included parts
with the Light Gray color.
|
Go for it. However, I bet you, I, Jonathan (axaday) and a few others here probably
know a lot more about the set than they do.
Cheers,
Randy

| | | A few years ago someone at 1000steine.de reported that he got this set with reddish
brown stairs from a seller who stated that all parts in that set were original.
At that time I found two used copies on Ebay which also had reddish brown stairs.
And I also found this brickshelf gallery:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=252053
And some boxes show reddish brown stairs:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5724794
So it seems some copies came indeed with reddish brown stairs. Maybe LEGO did
not have enough dark orange stairs in stock and replaced them with reddish brown
ones. We know at that time (around 2005/2006) there were significant problems
with parts availability. Remember my set 10128 from early 2006 that came with
white parts instead of light gray ones.

Jonas

Thank you, Jonas.

Hello, Sorry I didn't see your replies!!!
Thank you for approving my edit: Yes I am 100% sure they are his own.
The reasons are:
1) I never disassembled my copy since I was a kid.
2) I don't own any other set that has these reddish brown stairs. Those are
the only ones that I own (I have a rather small collection compared to some Afols)
Unfortunately I don't have the original box anymore, but my instruction booklet
shows Dark Orange both on the cover and on the interior pages. I was around 10
at that time and didn't pay attention to that.
I started using bricklink very recently and I greatly appreciate that you approved
my edit! I enjoy contributing and might do it again if I found other interesting
facts.
By the way: one mistake that I did notice as a kid is that in exo-force 7709
Lego gave me a wrong character head. I was missing the head of "Keiken" and instead
had 2 copies of the head of exf001. Do you think this could be considered as
an alternate part or that is just a factory mistake?

Items 41752 and 41753 were included only in the set of 2006, in the future (2009

Part bb0273 could only be included in the 2006 kit along with the x1678 battery.

My hose is a different colour to the other 'classic hose' parts I have;
it also has a slightly smaller inner diameter, although it is still larger than
that of a genuine pneumatic hose.
So either there have been different types of hose used over the years (possible)
or else what I have is an aftermarket replacement.
Whichever it is, I'm inclined to believe that this set most likely only ever
shipped with a 12L hose.

Is it slightly transparent?
When I checked mine, there was a ~10L black one near them but only one and slightly
translucent. I compared it with the pneumatic hose from the same period I had
in another drawer and they match (so in the pneumatic drawer it went).

Inventory issues have been an ongoing thing for a while. I part out new sets,
and items with no inventory extras (like regular bricks) BrickLink will show
as sold out on an order, yet when I pull the order, I have extra parts in my
physical inventory. I have dozens of these 'overstock' parts to count
and re-inventory due to this.

From the two links posted, the light gray 4x8's are waffle-bottom's.
Would this be sufficient weight to change the 3035 to 3035old as a Regular

| Please make changes to the following inventory:
* Add 4 Part 3035 Light Gray Plate 4 x 8 (Alternate) (match ID 1)
* Change 4 Part Light Gray {3035 Plate 4 x 8 to 3035old Plate 4 x 8 with Waffle Bottom} {Regular to Alternate} {match ID 0 to 1}
Comments from Submitter:
I have my 346-1 but no original box or instructions. The 4 light gray plates are all waffle bottom. I didn’t own any of the other kits listed as having light gray waffle so I suspect that this kit (or least my copy) came with waffle bottom plates. I am not certain enough to suggest changing this piece entirely from 3035 to 3035old, only to suggest an alternate.

Is there a reason for this, or is it simply no-one has been brave enough to
do it?
I don't mind having a go and try and get them entered, but I am not very
good with coming up with good accurate descriptions for the stickers. If it
was a plain number, I'd be fine, but when it comes to a SW figure, I don't
wish to describe it as one thing and upset the SW fans who know it should be
something else.
Also is there a limit to the number of characters you can put into a description?
As some Technic entry's are quite long before anything else is added.
See the photos for the items which I am referring to.
Any help/advise I would be most grateful for.
|
I noticed when I was working on a similar project that yes, the counterparts
were missing to some of the older, smaller, technic sets.
I think just no one has bothered to work on it.

set). Or the parts are yellowed with time (if the set was sealed).

Jon only parts out brand new sets that have never been opened. If he found light
gray parts, he found light gray parts.
| If we look in the Bricklink database for details with the color Light Gray (3023,
3894, 3702, 3703, 56145), then we will see that LEGO did not use this color after
2004.
|
They sure did. See https://www.bricklink.com/catalogListOld.asp?pg=1&colorInSet=9&sortBy=Y&sortAsc=D&catType=S
| A set of 9797 began production in 2006. The 56145 wheel was not produced
at all in the Light Gray color.
|
It was at some point, and it happened to make it into this set according to Jon.
| Second, I haven't seen sets where LEGO used "old" and "new" gray parts. Sets

| Hi,
I rebuild this old set according to BL inventory list and original instructions.
But in the end I have 3 bits left...
2x 3024 Yellow Plate 1 x 1
1x 3794a Yellow Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud without Groove (Jumper)
Looked at the instructions a couple of times now and I just can't figure
out where to put them.
Any ideas?

Fair point. But the same sets packaged in different factories or even at different
times in the same factory, or perhaps even at the same time in the same factory,
may contain different variants.
|
That other sets came out differently from the same (or not) factory at the same
time (or not) doesn’t change the fact that one set is as it was when it came
out of the factory.
All the sesterces are different, it doesn’t change the fact some of them can
be certified as being real antique coins from a certified time-period.
| I stand by my opinion that period-specificity is at least somewhat delusional.
|
If you’re “bricklinking” the set.
And it also depends on your value of “good enough”: Do you trace all the parts,
asserting they came from boxes the siblings of the set you’re bricklinking?
Or are you content with “we know these variants were made around that time”?
| | So even if BL’s catalogue didn’t exist, one could still be proud of owning a
period-specific set.
|
True. But what does that even mean?
|
Well, you are the one who used the term
| […]
Because of the aforementioned variability in packaging for a given set, what
real meaning do the words "historically accurate" or "period-specific" even have?
|
There’s the same thing with cars: there are the “only original parts,” the “we
replaced some parts with others from the same manufacturer and period,” and the
“we used some 3D-printed parts” and so on. And some parts (chassis, engine…)
are more important than others (belts) and even on some important parts, some
modifications are allowed without removing value (remove rusted parts of the
body, weld some new bits).
There’s the same thing with all collectible items.
And the “meaning” of “historically accurate” or “period-specific” is not binary
(is / isn’t), it’s, like about every word, a gradation of what people agree it
is.
It can be discussed precisely, generally between a seller and a buyer, to translate
it in monetary value, but it’ll still be generally fuzzy.

allows the latest owner to say their copy is historically accurate.
|
Fair point. But the same sets packaged in different factories or even at different
times in the same factory, or perhaps even at the same time in the same factory,
may contain different variants.
I stand by my opinion that period-specificity is at least somewhat delusional.
| So even if BL’s catalogue didn’t exist, one could still be proud of owning a
period-specific set.
|
True. But what does that even mean?
I do not have a large personal collection of LEGO parts. I looked through my
parts collection recently to create the attached image of the variants in molded
printing (which BL doesn't even distinguish) for just one part. And I missed
including one in the photo, by the way.
Each part in the photo shows a distinct and separate variant of molded printing,
with the second from the top having none at all. And my rough estimate at this
point is that at least two thirds of all parts have actual mold variants, while
most parts in production for more than a couple years probably have one or many
molded printing variants.
Because of the aforementioned variability in packaging for a given set, what
real meaning do the words "historically accurate" or "period-specific" even have?

I think I've figured out that, in addition to the other problems with variants,
BrickLink perpetuates the somewhat delusional thinking of pride in owning a period-specific
set.
Only if every single variant was thoroughly documented and also documented to
have appeared in that set could you say that your copy of a set is historically
accurate. And considering that many (if not most or all) parts have variants,
chasing those phantoms might become rather nonsensical at some point.
|
Don't know about the delusion so much, but I would be pretty ticked off if
somebody sold me a so-called used complete at $1 000 and it included
a bunch of modern cheap variants. Or worse still some early space sets with
the wrong clips, and LBG and DBG parts. It is all relative - someone like me
prefer to deal ith the correct thing at the correct time and I am prepared to
invest the time and effort in it. From experience with return buyers, I know
I am not alone. And yes, I've had buyers ask me to check pips, pins, hole
sizes, clips and mold numbers and send images prior to shipping and also to make
sure the variants and colour differences are correct. Of course I've also
had buyers who just do not care.
I personally would not go as far as to mention closed and open pins and combinations
thereof, but I find for the serious buyer it pays to find serious sellers, catalogue
failings notwithstanding

Er, not exactly.
One’s owning the set since it was bought sealed and never having mixed its parts
allows one to say one’s copy is historically accurate.

| I have been checking my son's Technic collection for completeness etc, and
have come across some Technic stickered assembly items, which are not in the
catalogue under the counterparts section.
Thanking you all.

Comments from Submitter:
Upon verifying this set, it appears that there is an alternate head type with is "recessed/closed" and not "blocked/open". Unless this variance should create no concern, a note should be made that this item contains a head variant. A note should also be made to col084, as the minifigure in 853600 could be confused with the original. Or, a new catalog entry should be made for the variant head.
|
The new head should be added to the catalog first and can then be added as an
alternate to this magnet set.
|
I've uploaded a face shot of this part. I have the "recessed" stud image,
but it replaces the face shot, so here is the stud image.

| Please make changes to the following inventory:
* Delete 1 Part 2335 White Flag 2 x 2 Square (Alternate) (match ID 2)
* Change 1 Part White 2335p04 Flag 2 x 2 Square with Imperial Soldier Black Symbol over White Cross on Blue Background Pattern {match ID 2 to 0}
Comments from Submitter:
The white flags were added as alternates because of the following change request:
https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=266509&nID=1191314
The submitter of that request now confirmed that the set with sticker sheet came with a printed small flag:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1197982
So I suggest to remove the plain white flag here since there is no evidence yet that it was ever inclueded in this set.

Hi,
I've actually found a functionality already available in BrickLink interface
to add the part ID# to the orders:
On the "Order Placed" screen, "Settings" "My Orders Settings" / "Order Detail
Settings" / "Show Item Number" tickbox.
Cheers,
Jonathan.

The solution is already there for you. Be sure you have dimensions / weight turned
on for your store and then select the "Instant Checkout Unavailable" box in the
Show More Options section in your store inventory.
|
Russell, how is it with dimensions of minifigures? I had often an order for 1
minifigure and the option Letter was offered at the instant checkout, because
there are no dimensions for them, and you can imagine, that you cannot send them
as letter, because they are to big for it. Any chance there will be a sollution
for this also, or do we have to put in the dimensions by ourselves?
