Wow, this is a pretty bold incorrect assertion. I was an inventory admin for
three years. The building instructions are the ultimate source for accurate inventories.
Not every set follows every rule, but that is where everything starts.

In this recent set, no:
So there is an inconsistent approach.
Nevertheless, we need the ability to display and use inventories in different
ways based on the needs of the person viewing that inventory. You don't
think so, because you want inventories to be structured in the specific way that
you feel is best for users of the site.
Why not just agree with me that inventories can do more than the system currently
allows and join me in the push for customizable inventories?
|
This feels like a false choice. Of course we would all like to see greater convenience
and functionality, but that does not mean we should allow information and functionality
to be removed now in the hope that someday we'll have a system
that lets us put it back. How about we use the existing functionality,
which will support all the information people want, including the full box contents
as they were packaged as well as the parts that form a "complete" set, and then
when (if) those extra features come along we can talk about how to use them?
Because we have put the cart firmly before the horse, here. There are thousands
of complete set listings right now that do not include all the parts Bricklink
says they should - some of them quite expensive parts. This is not due to any
error or wrongdoing by the sellers. It is purely the result of inventory changes
that have been made to accord with bad policies. I don't hear anybody really
defending that. I'm not surprised, as it seems indefensible.

Yes, the OP is correct, but for the wrong reason. The inventory would still be
"correct" even if the instructions only showed the two darts that can be held
by the model, because there are three darts in the parts list. The parts list
determines whether a part is extra or not, and not the building instructions.

| I recently dowloaded my orders in Excel format here:
https://www.bricklink.com/orderExcel.asp?orderType=received
I've done this before but I am now making a concerted effort to import this
into my own database primarily for tax purposes. I just realized that the process
imports every field except for Tax. Surely this was an oversight since the tax
field was added later. However it is frustrating because it means I still have
to manually search out every Minnesota order manually to calculate my total 2019
sales tax collected.
Surely this will be an easy fix and it can be corrected promptly!
Thank you,

That is absolutely false. From BrickLink guidelines for what should be included
in the Regular Items section of an inventory:
"Parts required to build the main model and any secondary models plus
any other parts on the official parts list. In the absence of an official parts
list, the official parts count, the instructions, and/or images on the packaging
are used to determine as closely as possible the contents of this section."

That is absolutely false. From the Standards for Inventorying a Set section,
which explicitly states that the source of an inventory should be a physical
copy of a set:
|
You have forgotten to boldface plus any other parts on the official parts
list.
Since there will be no parts in the building instructions that are not also on
the parts list, the parts list is all that matters.
|
"You should have a physical copy of the set you are inventorying to properly
identify the parts and colors. When this is not possible for old or rare sets,
then it is acceptable to use the instructions, set picture, or parts list (sometimes
printed on the box or in the instructions) to complete the inventory."
I hope the following sentence clears the confusion:
BrickLink inventories are based on what actually came in the box or bag.
Parts lists have errors. Set photos have errors. Building instructions have
errors. You like the idea of simple, straightforward, commonsense guidelines,
Don. Well, the sentence in bold text above is as simple and as sensible as you
can possibly get and you should applaud this if you stand behind your principles.
|
As I have pointed out elsewhere, packing a lot of vagueness into a short statement
does not make it more simple. "Based on" is the slippery term, here.
You are playing fast and loose with the definition of "inventory." The discussion
here is not about the complete inventory page, but in what section the parts
appear within that inventory. Nobody disputes that if three darts came in the
box, three darts should appear somewhere on the inventory page for the set. However
as is demonstrated by the existence of this thread, there are many people who
have come to understand that the regular section represents only the parts included
in the building instructions. For purposes of classifying parts within the inventory,
the building instructions do not matter.
|
I understand and have participated in the debate about how to best represent
what came in the box or bag, but saying that BrickLink bases inventories on the
parts list only and that inventories are not based on the building instructions
at all is spreading misinformation.
|
I disagree. The building instructions are not used to determine whether a part
is in the Extras sections or the Regular section. The parts list is used for
this determination. The building instructions do not matter.
Where the building instructions do matter is in the determination of a
"complete" set. Unfortunately, since the fairly recent romp through the inventories,
Bricklink is no longer a reference point for this information. It is now up to
each individual seller to verify their own complete set listing against the building
instructions. It takes about thirty seconds to amass thousands of listings for
used, complete sets with the remarks that they do not include the "extras." What
sellers almost always mean by "extras" is "the parts listed in the Extras section
of the inventory."
The admins know this, but the official response is, well, you know, it says at
the bottom of the page the inventory is just a guide, so, you know, let's
just pretend that our actions have no consequences and make with the change requests.

Another one where 3794 should not be deleted but changed to 3794a. First, 3794
was added as an alternate indicating that it was intended to be 3794a. And second,
this screenshot from a video review clearly shows 3794a.

Part 3794 in red should not be removed from this set. It should be changed to
3794a because both variants were found in this set. Several video reviews of
the set show 3794a. Included a screenshot from one of them that clearly shows
it.

It may have to do with the software they use to upload and sync their inventory.
This shouldn't be possible, however. Zero QTY lots should only be retained
in a stockroom.
|
And since it's one and the same company, they have the same software, which
probably sync both inventories at the same time.

Some statistics of average price, total sold, total available et cetera are calculated
during the daily maintenance and hence may differ slightly from the actual items
for sale. This especially shows for rare items that have just been sold or added
to inventories.

Ive just checked the same part again today and same issue. So its not the updating

construct the set per instructions and anything else included in the box should
be considered an extra? I'm not asking to argue, but just to understand
your position.
|
This is already Bricklink's position. A complete set is one that includes
all the parts required to construct the set per instructions. It's not my
opinion, it's Bricklink's definition. And despite Russell's claims
to the contrary, it has been the de facto practice on Bricklink that the
regular parts section represents the complete set. Anyone who claims that this
was not the case (or that it is still not the case) is making excuses,
I believe.
|
And how does your vision align with that significant fraction of sets which included
no building instructions? How would we address those sets without rules and
exceptions, to which you're mildly allergic?
|
Again, Bricklink's current definition of a complete set is based on the instructions
and the current policy for sets without them already applies.
|
If the site has removed certain information, such as what is required to build
the set, it has added other information: exactly what comes in a new box.
|
|
Again with the horses, it is possible to have an inventory both ways. Just needs
additional inventory functionality that doesn't rely so heavily on "sections."
And yes, I'm aware that you disagree with that. But since we've trotted
out our horses, I'm gonna abuse mine a little, too.
|
No, additional inventory functionality is not required to have it both
ways. In the case of plumes and other parts on sprues:
- Those needed to complete the set according to the instructions go in the regular
section as individual parts.
- Those not needed go in the extras section as individual parts
- The sprue part goes in the counterparts.
That preserves all of the historical information, eliminates the current contradiction
between the definitions of regular parts and complete sets, and as an added bonus
makes freaking sense.

What if there were:
— Main or Build (parts used to build the main model)
— Regulars (parts always included in the set)
— Extras (supernumerary parts)
?
And then:
(— Incomplete)
— Complete for main model only
— Complete for all models
— Complete with extras

The definition of counterparts:
Counterparts - Parts which are either assembled from or permanently
changed from parts in the Regular Items section during the process of building
a set according to the instructions. Examples include parts with stickers applied
and cut pneumatic hoses. In the absence of instructions, exceptions may be made.

Another chance to flog this horse.
Some of these plumes are quite expensive: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp?P=4502a&colorID=11
The misguided policy that says all parts on sprues are now regular items means
that many of these plumes that were formerly considered "extras" and therefore
not required to be included in a "complete" set are now required per the Bricklink
policies.
$15-$20 is a significant difference in value.
And these changes have resulted in several listings like the ones below, which
were listed correctly as "complete" under the old policy, but which are now incorrect.
One wonders how many of the "complete" sets that do not have any comments also
do not include the former "extras."
This set sells used, complete, for around the same price as one of the small
black plumes alone.
This policy has removed historical information from the site (the information
about which parts are needed to build the set according to the instructions)
and has created the potential for real confusion and unhappiness between buyers
and sellers (Where's the black plume that Bricklink says should be included?).
It is a bad policy.

Some statistics of average price, total sold, total available et cetera are calculated
during the daily maintenance and hence may differ slightly from the actual items
for sale. This especially shows for rare items that have just been sold or added
to inventories.

Sorry but BL has always been VERY slow when it comes to do inventorys (or rather
the Pending Approval).
Recent example: 40395 - 23 lots aka 67 parts. A set is out since 8 days and even
up on Legos site should be up including part list on BL by now imho.
I dont know how the policy is about naming other websites (especially now that
TLG owns BL) but the biggest lego moc site has the part list which includes no
stickers, minifigs or any new parts.

Regarding the curved conducting rails included in this set, the timeline for
inclusion in sets is believed to be as follows:

Don't worry about it. This is a piece that normally has extras included,
but the extra parts can vary by production batch. For extra pieces, the Bricklink

| Yes, it is quite likely that some of the clear 3024 are extras and that they
have not yet been determined in BL's set inventory.

I doubt it. The catmins especially know their stuff. Significantly more than
LEGO customer service reps do. When older parts are not available, the LEGO CS
often suggest replacement parts that are nothing like what they are meant to
replace.

I have the set. If no one has corrected it when I get home and can confirm,
I'll take care of it. But it certainly looks like someone already entered
PCCs from those instructions because only the lizard and the printed tiles lack
them.

If you were tasked with identifying a reason for this, keeping in mind the source
of BrickLink inventories, from where would you discover that the problem originates?

That is because BrickLink inventories are based on sealed set contents, and they
have features that other systems do not have, such as complete minifig and minifig
part data, stickers, counterparts, and extras. This is the reason that sellers
prefer to part out using BrickLink inventories, even if it means they have to
wait a while.

| Hi,
maybe it will sound strange but after a long, long break I've returned to
my youth craze and bought the Lego Taj MahaL.
Now it really matters to me to build by the instructions, means I want the build
to be 100% as intended. While I still haven't finished the build, I have
6 extra 1X1 transparent plate (3024). I've looked at the extra's inventory
on this site and damn it. I haven't seen those 6 extra parts listed
Now it drives me crazy, I retraced my steps but I haven't noticed that I
missed something. How that could be? is there a possibility the inventory list
on this site isn't right?
Thanks in advance!

| Hello, I have two Questions about the Inventory of the set 7730.
1. There are different Inventory-List in the Internet. Was there really a Cable
inside the box? Light Gray Electric, Wire 12V / 4.5V with four 1-prong connectors,
96 Studs Long
2. At the alternative Items there are 31 Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting
Rail Curved But must it nor be 15?
Thanks for the Answers
Is there anybody, who haves a picture of the Box Backside and Inside?

| At the moment the part "4.5V Whistle Thin with Yellow Base" is not connected
to a single set in the bricklink catalog.
I now found this whistle for the second time in a set 138 that consists out of
the original parts.
This whistle produces a low pitched tone that is technically not compatible with
the electronic control block of set 118. For that reason I think it is safe
to say that the "4.5V Whistle thin with Yellow Base" Belongs to set 138.
Now please don't ask for proof with a sealed set. A sealed set 138 is a very
rare thing on its own. A sealed set 138 with this rare whistle in it might be
non existent

This would be useful when adding to existing open orders (to save on shipping

being able to see which of those sellers have that part and what they're
chargning for it, is useful since I don't need to go back out to the wider
market (and shipping cost), AND I don't need to go to each open seller's
Store to search on them individually. One search does the trick.

| Is there anyway we can split up the two sets of minifigs from Batman movie lines??
Series 1 and 2 are all under one. Disney is 1 and 2 and not all together. I cant
help to fell that they should be, Batman Movie S1 and S2? Just sayin.

included an easy way to see these.
New appearances in dark turquoise:

Yes, that does appear to be a new colour, which LEGO abbreviates to 'TR.
BLUE OPAL'.
|
Lego calls it "362 Transparent Blue Opal". And there's another new color:
6294242 in set 43173. I'd assume it's "Transparent Pink Opal", but I
haven't found confirmation on the name/number yet.

| Should I be able to push all the way to the bottom with almost no
force when I cover up the hole, or does this mean that the part is broken? This
is the first small version I've had.

| Would it be possible to add another payment method.
Afterpay
Zip Pay
or at least have a blank one so that we can input our own custom method.
|
+1^google
Actually add a few blank ones, make it country specific with country specific
shipping methods and allow for direct QR codes and links. Or better yet - just
allow sellers in countries other than the USA to also use payment methods that
are relevant to their own circumstances even if it is miles ahead of what is
avaialable in the USA. If we can have onsite payments for paypal and stripe,
there should be no earthly reason for other methods not to be enabled as well.
