| How come parts and both occur as regulars in the inventory
for set ?
Shouldn't only one be regular and the other an alternate with both parts
having count 5?

I see that LEGO differenties the two parts in the instructions. Is this something
new?

It seems that they differentiate these in the parts list. And the submitter of
the inventory confirmed that the variants were included in the set in the quantities
listed in the instructions. So we will leave the inventory as is. I believe there
is at least one other set where the same thing happened but I can't remember
which set it was.
This is different than for example 3794a and 3794b where Lego did not differentiate
them and the quantities of each variant in sets would vary.

They seem to never have been found as Alternates.
And now we have a set (or two) with both versions and LEGO diffentiates these
variants.
Does this mean that these won’t ever be Alternates for LEGO? That LEGO will
never put one instead of the other?
Is there other Variants BL qualifies as variants but that have never been found
in the same set / for which LEGO never used one instead of the other?
Shouldn’t the catalogue have a note about that?

This one:
4x the old variant and 4x the new one in reddish brown in that set. The four
parts with groove came together in one bag and the four groovless parts came
in another bag.
It definitely looks like both variants are stored and treated within TLG's
inventory/storage system as if they were different parts. A bit strange indeed,
but at least we do not need to care about alternate parts in all those inventories
at the moment.
