In my opinion the only one that knows if an order is 100% completed is the Buyer,
not the Seller. Only the buyer can change status to received, but both buyer
and seller can change status to completed.

Status Received:
Package has been received but the buyer has not yet verified the contents on
the package.

As a buyer I Always use this, until I verified the contents, which can take a
while, depending on how many orders I receive at once, how big the orders are
and if I can find time to check.

I like it to have this great reminder to do so:
... Orders received, change status when completed

Now I experienced several times, that the seller changed status to completed.
Which is not correct, because I still didn't check the order yet. Besides
I now lost my reminder which tells me I still have to verify this order and leave
feedback.

As a seller I understand that it's nice to know when an order is completed
and that buyer's do change order status, but it's not up to the seller
to decide if an order is received and 100% correct.

My Suggestion:

Only allow the Buyer to change status to Completed.

Agreed, but there should be a time limit to it.
There are some buyers who fail to set it to completed.

The idea/concept is sound, however too many buyers 'never change the status
to completed for this to work. Even buyers who provide excellent feedback leave
the status thing as Received, rather than changing it completed.

Something along these lines is required but allowing just the buyer will cause
issues.

But is it a problem when the status will stay on 'shipped' or 'received'?
In the beginning I thought of it as a problem too, but it doesn't matter
to me anymore.
I have up to 6 months old (received) orders with status 'shipped' or
'received'
I'd rather have feedback and a wrong status, then the other way around

Is there a specific reason you want the buyer to change status?

I was wondering the same thing. I also use these as a way of tracking if I've
inventoried an order and it annoys the heck out of me when a seller changes the
status to completed. As a seller, I could care less what the status is after
I've changed it to shipped. I leave feedback after the seller pays so it
matters little to me.

I also agree that only the buyer should be able to mark it as completed. It
shouldn't take much to change the program. ( Famous last words? )

Agree, as a seller I will never know if the buyer thinks the order is complete
or not unless he marks it so (so why would I guess and do it for him?). As a
buyer I don't want the seller to mark my order complete either. Also, I
do not expect all buyers to remember/care to change the order status. To me it
does not really matter, after 6 months the stutus cannot be changed anyway, perhaps
at that point the system could set it to complete if the buyer does not but I
don't really think it serves any purpose at that point.

Correct, a Seller never knows, so should not be able to change status to completed.

Besides some Buyers, there are also some Sellers that don't care about the
Status.
Once in a while I receive an order with Status still on 'Pending' or
'Ready'. As a buyer I Always change status, but in this case I can't.
I have one placed order on 'Pending' for months now.

Maybe if this suggestion is approved and only the Buyer can change status to
'Completed' Bricklink could also allow to do so, whatever the status
is at that moment?!
Can't think of any risk on this point.

Minor tweek, make the color or lettertype different if the seller set it to complete...
Maybe red if the seller did it and green if the buyer sets it.

I don't care as a seller, but as a buyer, I use it as a reminder too and
the seller has no business telling me the order is completed.

Hi M.,

It wouldn't show as "... Orders received, change status when completed" when
status is Completed in another color

Isn't there something similar for paid, set by the buyer or the seller?

The Aliexpress website marks orders completed automatically when the given deliverytime
has passed.
Aliexpress also sends a message when a seller left feedback and ask the buyer
to do the same.

According to BL both orders are not completed.

- what's the problem for a seller when status stays 'received' or
even 'shipped'?

According to BL both orders are not completed.
I can't file and forget them.

Although as a seller I also would like to know when if an order is completed,
but it doesn't bother me that much anymore when I don't know.

Agreed, it's getting less bothering over time, but I still keep wondering...

  Diana

As a seller I understand that it's nice to know when an order is completed
and that buyer's do change order status, but it's not up to the seller
to decide if an order is received and 100% correct.

My Suggestion:

Only allow the Buyer to change status to Completed.

Diana

The Aliexpress website marks orders completed automatically when the given deliverytime
has passed.
Aliexpress also sends a message when a seller left feedback and ask the buyer
to do the same.

Of course we can. If my buyer leaves me positive feedback saying how great everything
was, that tells me the order is complete. Likewise, if my buyer sends me an email
or BL message thanking me for everything, I know the order is complete. Or if
two months go by and the buyer does not say anything. If something were wrong,
the buyer would let me know. Or how about buyers who NEVER leave feedback or
do anything else? Or the 50% of buyers who place only one order during their
entire existence on BrickLink and don't care to tell the seller anything
afterwards? After a dozen years in this business and almost 10,000 orders received
where not one single buyer has ever complained of me marking an order as completed,
I have a real good sense of knowing whether an order is completed.

You would think that, but some buyers just won't contact the seller. A few
months ago I got a feedback from a buyer in Brazil whose order arrived after
4 months. Apparently Brazilian customs and/or Brazilian mail service were very
slow with that order. The buyer never contacted me before he left that feedback.
Of course that was only a small order (4 EUR including shipping) but it doesn't
change the fact that you can't know that an order is complete if you don't
hear anything from the buyer.

Just an observation to add to the confusion.

There are sellers stating they will leave feedback when orders are (either) marked
as 'received', so there are buyers using 'received' to inform
their sellers the order is received, while meaning 'completed'.

Let's just use the orderstatus where they're for:
Received - Package has been received but the buyer has not yet verified the
contents on the package.

Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed.

Indeed, let's do that, so disallow the seller (who never knows...) to change
status to completed. Only that way, this status can be used where it's for

Sorry, but I vote no. In my experience, most buyers don't bother marking
an order as completed or even received. I like closure. And marking an order
as complete triggers accounting and bookkeeping events under my system. I have
marked thousands of orders as completed and not one buyer has ever complained.
If this really is a "problem" that needs fixing, then make it so that when a
seller marks an order as completed it only shows as completed on the seller's
Orders Received page and not the buyer's Orders Placed page.

Wouldn't to only take a small change to the setup to have those accounting
and bookkeeping event trigger on "shipped" since that is actually the last status
that the seller is supposed to edit? I'm with you on the whole closure thing
but once we file it, it is forgotten. As a seller and buyer, this annoys me to
no end when the seller edits the status after shipped, especially since I use
the status as a reminder of what has and hasn't been inventoried.

I see nothing wrong with me doing so. And if sellers aren't "supposed to"

Not everyone that get annoyed complains directly. I already had this problem
with one seller. I kept putting it back to received while he kept putting it
to complete. That would be a sign for anyone that the buyer don't want it
set to complete yet. but I had to do it three times, before I had time to check
the content.
if you do this a a seller make sure you leave well enough time for the buyer
to both recieved it and verified it. ie don't change it the first month.

First of all-glad to have you back.
Second- I don't know for sure if you were one of the Sellers who has done
this "for" me, but it has happened to me a few times. I just reset it to received
until I had time to finish verifying the order and then posted feedback. It
isn't something worth complaining about if a Seller only does it once on
an order. But having it done several times by the same Seller would be VERY
annoying.

I voted Yes because several possible solutions have been offered that wouldn't
affect the way you as a Seller currently do things.

It's not worth a complaint towards a seller, but it is annoying indeed. I
have send this last seller who changed the status a message in which I kindly
asked not to change status to 'completed' again, explaing why this is
important to me. With a lot of open orders, unfortunately it took some time before
I knew which order was changed. I knew I had 12 left to check and suddenly Bricklink
showed only 11.

Just been busy from 06:00 AM till 13:00 PM checking and completing 8 orders.

I guess you couldn't identify the order because there was no number or returnadress

Diana

100% agree. Sellers who update that status are not using it the way it is intended,
AND they are being rather presumptuous.

As a buyer I Always use this, until I verified the contents, which can take a
while, depending on how many orders I receive at once, how big the orders are
and if I can find time to check.

Perfectly agree. I absolutely hate this, also. Voted yes.

How about getting rid of the order update system instead?

Already a buyer placing a typical order on Bricklink is expected to:

1. Checkout the cart and wait for an invoice
2. Return to BL or his e-mail to read the invoice
3. Go to another site to enter and make payment
(3a. One seller I bought from wants the buyer to mark the order as paid
so she knows which orders on her screen to ship!)
4. Return to BL and mark the order as Received when it arrives
5. Return once more to BL and mark the order Completed after checking the contents
and to leave feedback.

That's five (possibly six) trips to the computer to complete a Bricklink
order, stretched out over a week or so, in most cases. Is it any wonder buyers
stop participating in the process once they have their bricks in hand?

Why do we need a "received" and "completed" status at all? Get rid of them. The
order is complete when the buyer leaves feedback.

Buyers want to order and pay in one visit. They are also accustomed from using
other sites to return - at their convenience - to leave feedback after the order
is received and everything is good. Rather than put sellers even more at the
mercy of this arcane system by making "completed" a buyer-only function, let's
just join the modern world on this one and make it simple. We need to stop asking
buyers to jump through five hoops every time they want to buy something.

We need it, because there are buyers who use it (like me). There's no obligation
for a buyer to change status. But for buyers who want to use it, it works great
(unless the seller changes the status after it's shipped).

Imagine having a very busy week as a seller and receiving 12 big orders (you
placed) that week. No time to check. It works perfect for me then to change status
to received and have this nice reminder on my screen.

Also, the seller knows that the order is received (but not yet verified).

Imo, all a buyer has to do is pay after the Invoice. All the rest is up to the
buyer. I already make it easy for a lot of buyers, by using a PayPal link in
my Invoice, but not every buyer wants to use that.

This said, I don't see any reason to get rid of the order status.
Just disallow the seller to change it to 'completed'.

Late to the party but had a seller do this to me when I had a large number of
orders with various statuses. Seems status cannot be changed after a certain
period of time so by that logic a seller could set an order to completed and
if you do not realise and change it back in time it could get locked like that
despite never being received. Thankfully I was able to identify and change the
status back to shipped after reviewing a bunch of orders.

I use the statuses to mark off orders received and know which I am still waiting
for to arrive. Definitely if after a reasonable amount of time a buyer has not
updated the status but has not indicated the order was not received then the
status should automatically be set to completed and/or allow the seller to do
so. At the very least a seller should not be allowed to set it to completed after
1 day of marking it as shipped for an international order over a weekend! This
is what happened to me and it really annoyed me to the point I left neutral feedback
(was debating leaving negative as it was seemingly marked completed on a Sunday
after being shipped on the Saturday).

Just to add, it was a relatively expensive order too and has shaken my trust
in the seller and BrickLink processes in general.
