It is absolutely brown. Shine a light behind a part and look at the piece. Nothing

Just like there is nothing brown about old mud "grey"
LEGO's official name for the old color is Transparent Brown. I think Rylie's
comparison highlights how brown the old color really is in comparison:

An extremely noticeable distinction with sun damaged parts is that the sun damaged
part of the bricks are always the same color. If the buyer believes they are
sun damaged, they should be able to see the sides of the bricks that do not have
sun damage on them and send you photos of what the undamaged sides look like
next to the damaged sides, and the transition where the sun damaged side is visible
next to the undamaged sides. I have some old bricks that have sun damage on them
and they have it on sun damaged sides only and from the direction of the sunlight
that damaged them. The other sides of the brick are undamaged and retains the
brick's molded color.
Most common LEGO bricks that are not modified bricks have at least 6 sides. Some
sides should be free of sun damage if they are truly sun damaged.
They should send you photos of the undamaged side unless the color is consistent
over all sides. If it is consistent over all sides it is probably not sun damage,
but a differently colored brick.
Cheers ...

| I wonder if the Toa Inika were ever released in 296. The marbled parts
only appear with 131. The element IDs/PCCs of 4493393 & 4493394 appear both in
the database and the instruction manual, and are after the last known 296 ID,
4493182.
Have you find any Inika parts in the color?

| New thread, new title etc etc
I've more or less reworked the data I had with the new, accurate silver
classifications, which is lovely! I'm liaising with hereforbricks614 to try
and tick off as many Bionicle-specific 296 parts as we can. 2006 is still our
dodgy year, with 131 v1, 131 v2, and 296 all being used. I'm a little concerned
that 2005 might be a potential source of 296 too, but have written off 2007 (blame
some very, very dodgy 131 v2 Jaller swords for that). Te only real challenge
left is to detangle the aforementioned dodgy 131 v2s, and true 296 pieces I've
managed to confirm a bunch of the potential parts already, but more rechecks
are required before I bring that data to BrickLink proper for potential catalogue
inclusion. I'll keep picking at it as I find time between work and other
dumb Bionicle-centric side projects.
Unfortunately, 296 isn't our only bugbear. I've had 2 confirmed sightings
of this weird dude: a 131 v1 Mahri shoulder piece. This image was provided by
a mate, I don't have this piece myself. This piece was introduced in 2007,
and in theory shouldn't exist. In both reported cases, a single one of these
was pulled from a bulk lot, with no accurate indication of what set contained
it. Even more strange: there are no sets that only use 1...
If anyone has any insight as to where this weirdo snuck in, I'd love to hear
it. I'd also love to hear from anyone who has owned the 2005 Bionicle system
playsets from NIB, particularly if said sets contained a Pearl Gold Kraahkan/Pearl
Gold Visorak body. There's a slim chance they might have used 296 as their
silver, going on other contemporary uses, and I'd love to be able to write
them all off conclusively.
Thoughts?

| In isolation, calling that colour orange makes sense. But put some other parts
in existing shades of orange and similar colours that don't use the word
orange, then it is obvious why you need more than just orange to describe it.
It is like opening a paintbox containing 60 tubes of different colours of paint.
Calling ten of them red, 10 blue, 10 green and so on may help group them into
rough families but doesn't distinguish within the family.
|
That's the problem, though: I'm seeing this color in isolation. I'm
not a catalog administrator and I don't have any parts in this new color.
I tend to deal only with the basic LEGO colors, and to my eye, especially after
being run through BrickLink JPG compression, this new color looks exactly like
standard LEGO Orange. So I would just call it orange until I see it in person,
which will be never unless it becomes popular.
Sometimes, I wonder if the LEGO Group and BrickLink are going in the right direction.
I reckon that LEGO was a much different company in 1932 than it is today, and
that BrickLink was a much different website in 2000 than it is today. Both have
expanded greatly, but at the cost of more loyal customers and dedicated users.
Newer customers and users are more like me: they are not so picky about minor
colors and variations. But I spend much less on LEGO than a BrickLink Inventory
Administrator. These companies are sacrificing longtime fans to gain mass appeal.

112 was merged in 2005:

167-209 were Brickarms colors which were added in early 2018 and removed some
time after The LEGO Group acquired BrickLink, so the numbers can now be used
for normal colors.

Always wondered what the story is there... Reddish Orange was 256 before being
bumped down to 167.

I read (somewhere) that the database can handle only integer figures upto 255,
so Reddish Orange had to use a lower (unused) value. As for the other missing
values...?

| | When asked to describe the color of the parts in the picture below, the first
word that comes to my mind is orange, but I've neither the parts nor a dictionary.
|

Context is important.
When presented with the picture of a car, and asked to describe it, I say “it’s
(the picture of) a car.”
When presented with the picture of a car, and asked to describe it, in the
context of a catalogue of vehicles where there’s already coupés, berlines, limousine…,
I try to find something better to describe it. And as I don’t know much about
cars, I’d ask an expert or look into a book. I wouldn’t use the first specialized
term that comes to my mind and that, in my non-expert knowledge, is loosely associated
with what I see.
Then, if there’s one (or several) specialized term that matches but I find it’s
too obscure for the purpose of being a search term, I don’t use it and choose
another way to describe the car.

| No language evolves by hoarding a dozen (or more) words and making them all synonyms
with a vague meaning.

English does that.
| And when you need to describe something precisely, like a colour in a catalogue,
you don’t pick one word at random. You compare all the possible words and look
at their usages… usages which are compiled in dictionaries
|
That sounds like something a French person would do.
| Or you create a phrase with more common and more comprehensible words

That sounds like something an English person would do.

Your first language colors your view of the world, even if you learn to speak
a second language.
