We are currently looking to get larger / better images directly from the LEGO
Group for a lot of the older sets.

Wow! That's great to hear!

I really love how this image looks. How can we get more updated images of classic
sets. I have several that I have been taking lately that I would be glad to
offer if needed.

As a rule, we only use official images for sets. This one was approved as an
exception, but I have moved it to the alternate slot.

We are currently looking to get larger / better images directly from the LEGO

Don't expect any changes to this part of the site's functionality soon.
You'll have to learn how to make best of what already is there. I think maybe
you might benefit from:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&viewImg=Y&sortBy=D&sortAsc=D&catType=P&v=1
found halfway down https://www.bricklink.com/catalog.asp

Otherwise, for the task you have set yourself, you might be better of with sites
like NewElementary or Brickset. Bricklink's primary focus is to have a catalog
for selling purposes.

The year of release associated with part-color-combinations stems only from what
is listed in inventories. Information like a hiatus in production is not directly
available on Bricklink. You would need to breakdown the inventories to the source
of each part manually. You can use the catalog item relation pages like https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=3008&colorID=39&in=A
to find the sets a specific colored part comes in, and https://www.bricklink.com/catalogDownload.asp
to get a reference list for all sets including their year of release.

As far as I know they are not assemblies because they came separate in the sets.
I have separated hundreds/thousands without causing any damage.

I believe that assemblies are not only made for pre-assembled parts in sets.
Example:

Part No: 2878c02 Name: Train Wheel RC, Holder with 2 Black Train Wheel RC Train and Chrome Silver Train Wheel RC Train, Metal Axle (2878 / 57878 / x1687)
*
2878c02 (Inv) Train Wheel RC, Holder with 2 Black Train Wheel RC Train and Chrome Silver Train Wheel RC Train, Metal Axle (2878 / 57878 / x1687)
Parts: Wheel

This part is even easier to disassemble than the hinges, and have no risk of
inducing stress marks.

/Jan

All wheel assemblies are automatically approved if they are assembled as such
in the instructions.

For the larger hinges, that may present a problem. I would not put any work into
photos, etc unless you know for sure we are going to take them. If I had to make
a decision now, I would say no, but with more time we might come up with a good
reason for them.

There are no guidelines at the moment for part assemblies, just as there are
no guidelines for part variants. If you're asking for suggestions, I would
suggest waiting until we have updated guidelines in place before submitting these
parts as assemblies.

Our goal is to have the guidelines fully updated by the end of the year. As
of this moment we have 18 out of 27 updated and only have 9 left to complete.
All of that work has occurred since February, 2020.

Yep.

The intention of the recent update to this page:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=170

was to clarify situations like this. Take a look and see if it does.

If it doesn't, then please offer suggestions on improving the standards so
that it is clear where individual statuettes should go.

Set No: 75261 Name: Clone Scout Walker – 20th Anniversary Edition

I think
this new mold was created because in order to create the anniversary figure lego
wanted to use a 1 piece Vader helmet, as opposed to the 2 piece helmets they
switched to a couple of years ago. This mold variation deserves a note in the
catalog entry for the helmet,, or a variant added to the catalog, but I'm
not sure which. If someone wants to take the appropriate action from here, please
go ahead. See the attached image for the differences between the two.

think one on right is a chinese knock off.

I have an original helmet from 1999 and it is fur sure the left variant, so that's
definitly not a new mold. I would also say that most if not all images here show
the left variant:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=30368&in=M

And regarding the reintroduction of the old helmet in set 75261, the designers
said that the old mold was still available:
https://www.brothers-brick.com/2019/04/09/interview-with-lego-star-wars-designers-jens-kronvold-and-kurt-kristiansen-feature/

So I am wondering: Where did you find the right variant and are you sure it is
a genuine LEGO part?

I agree with Jonas.
Your "old" mold on right is suspicious. I just take a look on my Vaders from
different years and in all I have left helmet with narrow nose so your "new"
mold. And there is only one diffrence between oldest and newer Vader halmets
from this mold (later on this).
For this post I just took 4 representants from different years.
1) First one is

Minifig No: sw0004 Name: Darth Vader (Light Gray Head)
*
sw0004 (Inv) Darth Vader (Light Gray Head)
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
years 1999-2003
My minfigure on images is from 2002 set.
2) Second one is

Minifig No: sw0277 Name: Darth Vader (White Pupils)
*
sw0277 (Inv) Darth Vader (White Pupils)
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
years 2009-2016
My minfigure on images is from 2011 set.
3) Third one is

Minifig No: sw0599 Name: Santa Darth Vader
*
sw0599 (Inv) Santa Darth Vader
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Other
this ony came onluy in 2014 advent calendar.
4) fourth one

Minifig No: sw1029 Name: Darth Vader (20th Anniversary Torso)
*
sw1029 (Inv) Darth Vader (20th Anniversary Torso)
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
the newest one from 2019 anniversary set.

and as you can see all of them have identical narrow nose just like "new one"
from your photo.

The only change is that somwhere in timeline LEGO started to add molded number
on this helmet and LEGO logo. Oldest ones don't have mold number and LEGO
logo. It is visible on images. But with mold number this helmet was already in
2014 advent calendar set and this helmet is identical with 2019 helmet.
btw LEGO has for this part only one mold number and one PCC
https://brickset.com/parts/design-30368

I also check that in this Vader from 2013

Minifig No: sw0464 Name: Darth Vader (Celebration)
*
sw0464 (Inv) Darth Vader (Celebration)
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Other
helmet is also already with mold number on it. (and it is of course identical
with 2019 one). I couldn't track for now when LEGO have started to molding
part number on this helmet. But beside this only difference oldest helmet without
part number are identical with newer ones with part number.

are minifigures and others are minifig, untensil, decorated?? Or is it just
up to whatever the person who adds it feels like doing?

My sense is that if they were supposed to be a small minifig then it was added
as such and if it was used as an actual statue/toy then it was added as a utensil.
Astronaut guy doesn't seem to follow the pattern.

Please add filters to the gallery search and the first one should be to filter
out all display only models.

I go to the gallery to find models to download, order and build, not just to
look at. I like to filter out the display only MOCs.

Thank you.

This solution looks like what I suggested.

I'm glad these changes will be made, and I look forward to see how the inventories
for my old 80's sets will look in the future.
