Hello everyone,

We are implementing a change of policy in regard to Sales posts in the Forum.
As the number of sellers has grown and as our site becomes more and more of a
premium marketplace, there is more incentive to advertise in the Forum and this
has led to an overabundance of posts under the Sales topic.

To be sure, there are a few members who have abused the Sales post feature, running
what seem to be constant deep discounts on everything in their store or in certain
categories. Most members who post in Sales, however, are not currently abusing
the feature, but we want to reduce the overall prominence of Sales posts.

The policy has been changed from a maximum of one per day to a maximum of one
per month
. Please see the screenshot below.

Sellers posting more frequently may incur a friendly flooding ban for one month.
These are non-cumulative bans and will not go on your record. Bans will be lifted
immediately if the member contacts us and lets us know they agree to the new
policy.

Only the initial post in a thread counts toward the total Sales posts. Replies
will not count unless it is obvious that someone is posting to circumvent the
new policy.

This policy will be in place for the next 6 months after which we will assess
the situation.

**************

A word about "good" sales posts

On the BrickLink platform, visual presentation is a big part of our success.
This is why nice images are so critical to the catalog. When we see the same
one-line-of-text Sales posts cut and pasted over and over, it doesn't really
engage buyers. In fact, you may turn people off with such posts, especially if
they are done with frequency.

We're thinking of running a little contest over the next 6 months to reward
the best and most creative sales posts. More details on that later.

Although for the last couple of years we’ve posted more than our share of announcements
in that topic charter, it’s somehow a welcome change of policy for me personally
For sometime now I’ve been feeling as though I’m not doing my utmost to sell
off our inventory, if I didn’t do as permitted and post something nearly everyday.

That said and at the same time, I've always been cognizant that the effectiveness
of constant sales posting can quickly stagnate, stale and even become counterproductive
for a store. So from the start, I have put a deal of effort into making our announcements
interesting and fun for others. Just hope I’ve succeeded in doing that much at
least. You never really know though, do you? And admittedly I recently have slacked-off
in that regard.

I welcome it with a bit of relief, in any case... Though I do think it's
the wrong move, policy wise. We'll find out in 6 months time

past year and the others were from before i new better about sales and stuff

Will this also apply to sellers that post sales announcements when they contact
their mailing list? Some sellers never visit the forum but post sales notices
like that. I've never really understood why the default for that is on.

This was pointed out to us already and we will put a ticket in to get that default
removed and a note placed in the form about the current limit.

It would also be good to have something similar for all the Canadaian sellers
and their free parcel every Tuesday announcements that get placed in sales
or shipping or announcements. Like the fake sales posts, I tend to add those
users to the ignore list.

I feel that changing from once per day to once per month might be too big of
a change. Perhaps once per week would be more appropriate. I've never posted
sales in the forum and I do agree that once per day is too much -- almost
like spamming.

I was thinking the same thing but then I thought a little bet more about what
constitutes a sale, or at least what it is supposed to. A sale is supposed to
be when you lower your prices a certain amount lower then what you normally charge.
If you are constantly running a sale then your sale prices are just your normal
everyday prices.

We to have never posted in the "Sales" forum but we usually always have
all of our parts priced at any given time at 9% to 15% off the 6 month sales
average so we could potentially advertise a sale every week in the forums but
where is the "sale" in that? We price our inventory below the 6 month
sales average to increase our overall selling of parts so advertising a "Sale"
would just be false advertising.

I think once a month is a good idea.

I support once per month, for the simple reason that if only 10% of the sellers
were posting there (which works out to 600 posts per month), that would be 20
a day. At that level it is tolerable. Anything above that means that someone
is getting lost in the clutter.

The important thing here is about the quality of your post, and not the quantity
of posts.

I've noticed that some sellers don't realize that they can reply to their
own Sales posts. Will you be checking on the filtering and reminding sellers
who repeat the same sale information in a different post? I don't feel that
would be worthy of a ban for 1 month, they're trying to get their sale to
reflect current discounts.

You may be doing more harm than good if you blanket ban every seller who wanted
to keep their sale announcement up to date.

I personally just skim the Sales category on the few times I am looking for a
bargain, which is relatively infrequent anyway. What brought on this change to
the rules?

I would only recommend you ban anyone clearly abusing the Sales topic and remind
them that they can use the Reply function on their forum posts to update their
Sales announcements.

I've seen very few new sellers who intentionally spam the Sales forum. Most
seem to just be trying to attract attention to their Sales announcement. If they
are a new user being lenient and monitoring them is advisable.

Cheers ...

This is a welcomed change.I see you mention under the "sales" category.
I have the box checked to not see those but I still see way too many sales posts
under other forum topics. I think a lot use the announce section.
Could this be worded differently to include the entire forum and not just apply
to those who use the correct sales section?

Has anyone been banned yet (not asking for names)? As a quick look in the sales
topic shows the heavy spammers seem to be continuing. I've ignored and least
favourited the majority of the daily fake sale spammers so will continue to do
so.

Actually, the worst offenders have stopped.  But you wouldn’t have noticed if
they are on your ignore list

It is noticeable if you click the sales topic, as the ignore list doesn't
work then.

Going from "one per day" to "one per month" is IMHO to drastic.
Why not "once per week"... People who don't want to see Sales posts
can simply ignore them, not?

What if people want to see TRUE sales posts? Not much point having sales posts
if they don't mean anything to anyone? A true sale is where a stores items
have remained at an unchanged price for longer than they have been at a discounted
Sale price! A true sale also comes to an end! An ongoing weekly advertised sale
is not a true sale and is just being super misleading to your customer base!

In fact I would go one step further and make it so you can never manually post
any sales in the forum but instead have a system in place where you can only
discount items in your store where pricing has remained unchanged for 3 months
after which you can then also have a "notify' type button which allows
you to have an automated sales post sent to the forum. This would increase the
validity of any sales and warrant people paying more attention to those sales!

There are genuine sales and fake sales (prices increased then put on a percentage
or items constantly "on sale", then there are spammers that post every
day and non-spammers that do it once.

Unfortunately, you cannot view only genuine sales from sellers that are not spammers,
at least not without manual intervention. Some sellers do have genuine sales
and it is good to be alerted to these and these would be hidden if you hide the
whole sales topic. Unfortunately, these sellers are in the minority in the sales
topic. To avoid the spammers and fake sales sellers, it is necessary to use the
ignore setting for each one of these to hide their threads (I also tend to least
favourite the store as a reminder to avoid them).

The problem isn't the forum; it pushes the shop to the Front page.
Which makes unfair someone posting every day or such.

Does it count as private data if they are engaged in a business transaction ?

Not if it’s useful for the transaction, but Matthieu says the buyer’s IP is “irrelevant
for the purpose” (IIRC, legal wording).

BL is law-compliant when BL risks something and, AFAIK, BL doesn’t risk anything
here, only the sellers do.  Actually, also AFAIK, nothing says marketplaces should
enforce those laws in acting, preventing, warning the sellers, applying to the
local authorities or whatever.
OTOH, members can apply to the local authorities to investigate the sellers.
But then I won’t bet on the chances of something happening to those small fishes.

Ehm... I am no specialist but at first sight BrickLink does risk liability if
they share private data that is not relevant for the purpose. (A seller needs
the buyer's address to ship an order, but does for example not need that
IP address). If this data is collected and shared, then BrickLink is the party
doing that. By offering their services in the EU, the GDPR applies. If anyone
files a complaint to the relevant authorities, I think that could make BrickLink
liable for 1) possibly collecting more data than needed, and 2) a data leak because
they share the information with others (the sellers). The related fines can be
serious, so BL does risk something. Compared to other offenders, I think BL is
not at the top of their priority list, but that is no reason not to comply with
the law.

I was only answering the “BL should moderate the sale feature” part, not the
part (in parentheses) about IP addresses.

IIRC, I didn’t say anything about IP addresses because I had nothing to say for
or against it, contrarily to the main point

Sorry, I should have snipped that part or answered before (thus leaving the quote
but below my answer), to make it clearer I wasn’t addressing it (pun intended).

To be sure, there are a few members who have abused the Sales post feature, running

the feature, but we want to reduce the overall prominence of Sales posts.

The policy has been changed from a maximum of one per day to a maximum of one

I’m very sorry for over posting. Please don’t be mad at me.

engage buyers. In fact, you may turn people off with such posts, especially if
they are done with frequency.

We're thinking of running a little contest over the next 6 months to reward
the best and most creative sales posts. More details on that later.

I received a mail concerning this. Really sorry about it. I'll change my
habits.

This policy was put into place before the site was taken offline due to the hack.

Hi,
I posted a sale yesterday and got a message alerting me to this message (below).
Sorry I had missed that. One of the things it says is: Bans will be lifted
immediately if the member contacts us and lets us know they agree to the new
policy.

I'm not sure if this applies to me (ie if there's now a ban); however,
I wanted to confirm that I have no been made aware of this new policy and agree
to abide by it.

Thanks and all the best,
Mike

If you can post in the Forum now, you are not banned. The ban feature is all
or nothing when it comes to different topics.

There is also the case of this Seller... who isn't really a Seller... and
who's the second poster on BrickLink...

Could we set a rule, like X posts every Y sales or something?
So I can keep posting and not him?

Please have a good weekend - all!

AFAIK, this is your one and only sales post: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1409228
So, under your new rule, you can’t actually post anymore

Whaaaat? But this was May 7, 2023?!
(thanks to remember it, I still think it was a fun sale)

That's an iniquitous rule!

What about the Pizza fans - seriously, that's a major problem.

I didn’t remember the exact post, I just knew you never posted sales.  I checked
your history and dug the post out

Well, you can’t both complain we don’t implement suggestions and implement them!
Especially it’s your suggestion that’s implemented!

Posts about pizza with gummies and pizza-flavoured gummies get cancelled every
day!

You're used to post on BrickLink and then realize Facebook may be a better
place to hang around... what a shock!
