Hi, on my 8880 and instruction ( and instruction download on Lego.com) it is the part 6540a are asked and represented, not the 6540b. thank you for your update.

The white 6540a were included in later copies of the set and are listed in the
alternate items section. See also the note at the bottom of the inventory:
