| Hey guys, I'm pretty new to selling (about a full month under my belt).
Today for some reason I have been getting a few brand new buyers with zero feedback
placing orders with request for shipping quotes then not paying. These are all
for full lego sets and tying up my inventory while they do not pay. My conspiracy
theory brain tells me this might be other store competitors tying up my sets
since I tend to list my items as the lowest price available. Am I just being
crazy? It's like 5 different sets now and I am the lowest price on all of
them.

| Most likely nothing malicious. Best method is to setup instant checkout to prevent
NPB’s as it makes them have to pay in order to place the order

yes but on larger sets shipping prices vary greatly depending on what zone they
are to me. someone have a good example of this setup?

Honestly, the best way to do it is keep the shipping costs simple on instant
checkout, but if a particular set is going to cost more to ship than others,
factor it into the price of the set instead? Then, when instant checkout "under-charges"
for postage, you've already accounted for that cost in the price of the set.

The issue is that the shipping price for the same set can vary hugely across
the US, even though it is treated as one country in the checkout.

|
You don't know they are not paying just yet, as it is the same day. They
have a week to pay. If they are doing it for quotes, ensure you have quotes turned
on.
After they get the shipping price from your order and don't pay, then either
cancel or NPB. If someone replies saying shipping makes the price too high, I
tend to cancel. If no response, I NPB.

I understand they get time to "pay" thus typing up my inventory for a
week.

Are you talking about the quote feature, when buyers can request a quote without
placing the order? In that case you inventory is not tied up until the quote
is accepted.

If you don't believe that they will pay, then you can cancel the order and
free up the stock instantly. It doesn't give them a warning though and it
also means that you could get feedback from them.
Of course, if you are sure they won't pay then you can relist the stock to
advertise it again, and then start the NPB at a later date. However, this runs
the risk of someone else buying the item and you being wrong if the initial buyer
pays for the order by themself or after they receive the NPB message telling
them to pay.
Often zero feedback buyers ordering then not paying is not done maliciously but
just a lack of openness and misunderstanding. If they don't know how much
an order will cost until the seller invoices, then it can be confusing. Many
sellers now use instant checkout so the new buyer might think that they are not
obliged to go ahead until postage costs are shown.

You should turn on shipping quotes. Also, if your store features stuff new users
are likely to want to buy, ie complete sets listed cheaply, then put a hint in
your terms for them to use the Request a Quote feature instead of checking out

yes shipping quotes is on. I've had 4 orders now over the weekend from 0-feedback
newbies that have not completed. 2 have asked from cancels now after being invoiced.
one even said it was my fault in his request to cancel because I was not clear
about additional shipping fees when all I did was quote him what pirateship said.
these are not request for quotes. they are actual orders. I wish bricklink
made the process easier for newbies to understand and that they are obligated
to complete the transaction by law.
Anything over 5 lbs I manually quote because zone 1 vs zone 8 varies SOOOO greatly
in price. Im in california so many east coast orders are all zone 8. I wish
bricklink would use UPS API to calculate zones in shipping for instant checkout.

I don't know what courts are like in the US but trying to enforce a sale
to a buyer when the seller does not tell them the full price of the order including
shipping and any other hidden costs at the point the buyer orders is not likely
to be taken seriously, especially when the seller has no financial loss. It is
becoming embarrassing that bricklink is still partly in the dark ages here.
If you don't want to have stock tied up, then turn on quotes and turn on
IC, and put an indicative shipping table in your terms.

yes obviously this is 100% a bricklink being in the dark ages issue, we are in
agreement in that. bricklink needs to streamline the shipping experience and
just integrate with pirateship or dare I say it, shipstation (sigh), at the very
least. at least have some way to calculate UPS API based on distance.
I sell a lot on ebay and as much as I hate their fees, I do have to say buyer
experience is much easier there and sell prices reflect that.

| Buyers are not, strictly speaking, obligated to complete the transaction by law.
In fact, in some jurisdictions (for example, the European Union) buyers are not
obligated to pay if they do not know the total price at checkout. BrickLink's
"Items will be reserved for you, and you will be obligated to purchase them"
statement is rather misleading in my opinion.
Give your buyers time to pay. Just because a buyer has zero feedback does not
mean that they will not pay. Buyers have lives outside of BrickLink and can't
always pay for an order the moment that they receive the invoice. If five days
pass and the buyer still hasn't paid, then you can start the NPB process.
Furthermore, reading through your Store Terms and Conditions and Shipping Policy,
I see no indication of estimated shipping costs. A shipping table or the like
would go a long way towards reducing cancelled orders by giving buyers an idea
of what they can expect to pay for shipping ahead of time.
In regards to quotes, there are two settings you need to enable before buyers
can request quotes in your store: a global setting, in your store settings under
the management tab: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/mystore/management.page
as well as for each individual shipping method (see images below).
Reading through your shipping policy, I see the following paragraph:
Please note we are only responsible for items up until the point we ship the
package. Insurance is optional and up to the buyer to purchase or not. We offer
this option as "turned off" by default to help reduce shipping fees,
but we are not responsible for lost or damage packages once a package has shipped.
If a package is lost, it is up to the buyer to file with the post office a lost
package trace. We do not make any money off insurance, these are the exact rates
from the post office.
This is not true. Consumer laws generally place responsibility for ensuring delivery
on the seller, not on the buyer or the post office. In the event that a package
is lost, the buyer is entitled to a full refund regardless of whether or not
the package was insured.
Yes, I agree that it is frustrating that BrickLink does not allow sellers to
set different rates for USPS zones within the United States.

I see, it's a pain.
But is there so much a difference? I mean, it's often a seller can lose $1
because he shipped to ND with a shipping price more adapted to FL (random States,
please no offense)?
Is it important, is it better to have no deal than to lose (or win) a bit?
Those can't just decide to make an average, or a Flat rate based on where
his buyers are the more often located?
Just an average thought.

It depends.
For small packages, the difference is small. For example, check this table:
https://www.pirateship.com/usps/first-class-package
For 1-4 oz package, it costs $3.59 to ship to Zone 1 (0-50 mi) vs. $4.13 to ship
to Zones 8-9 (1801+ mi and U.S. Territories). That's a difference of $0.54
or about 15%. Big whoop.
However, for large packages, the difference can be significant. Check this table:
https://www.pirateship.com/usps/priority-mail
For a 5 lb package, shipping is "less than $8.74" to Zone 1, $24.97 to
Zone 8, and $52.45 to Zone 9!
Shipping boxed sets can also get very expensive due to the surcharge for packages
that exceed certain dimensions.
In short, for boxed sets, there's a lot to gain or lose. If BrickLink implemented
USPS zones it would at least make it easier estimate the shipping cost in advance.
Personally, I don't bother with trying to charge the exact shipping cost,
instead charging an average rate as you suggested. But most of my orders fall
in the 1-4 oz range rather than 5 lbs and above.
It also depends where the seller is located. For a seller in the Midwest, most
buyers are probably within Zones 5-6, whereas for a seller in California, most
buyers are in Zones 7-8.

Thank you for this. well said and I +1 all of what you wrote!
I'm in California. zone 1 to zone 8 is HUGE for complete sets (usually 7-10
pounds). There's no way to average a shipping price and I do not want to
charge more than necessary. bricklink needs to access UPS API data to calculate
this or integrate with pirateship or shipstation. I have my shipping table setup
for up to 5 lbs for instant checkout, but anything over this I manually look
up right now. It's a chore.

| | I'm in California. zone 1 to zone 8 is HUGE for complete sets (usually 7-10
pounds). There's no way to average a shipping price and I do not want to
charge more than necessary.
|
I'm just a stranger, you know?
| bricklink needs to access UPS API data to calculate
this or integrate with pirateship or shipstation. I have my shipping table setup
for up to 5 lbs for instant checkout, but anything over this I manually look
up right now. It's a chore.
|
Until then, make auto-checkout for small items/sets (with a size/weight limit),
and manual invoice for the rest?
No problemo amigo.

thats how i have it setup now. auto checkout up to 5 lbs. Its the fact that
a had several newbies all buy large sets and NPB or cancel them after being quoted.
kinda wastes everyone's time really.

You can also put a shipping table in your terms, showing indicative costs for
a fictional order of for example 8lbs to each zone. Or do it for 6, 7, 8, 9,
and 10 lbs. Even that gives buyers an indication of what the costs are before
placing the order.

| Of course agreed with the detailed explanations above.
|
|

Thanks, interesting, didn't know it could make such a difference!
Shops selling (often/mainly) Sets take a huge risk IMO (damages, customs inspections,
shipping price approximation, returns...) for, of course, a better and quicker
profit (than parts for instance). I chose not to.
But yes, BL could implement this. Also
