It's not entirely obvious if its Light Nougat or Tan.

just curious if you have any tips for avoiding a halo with lego bricks? they
are so shiny and since they are so small you need to get the light close to them

Yes, reflections are inevitable unless you diffuse all your light sources. There
are lightboxes with fabric sides designed for this. Otherwise, you can try to
rig something up with something white, thin, and translucent. This will block
some of the light however, so then you will actually need more light sources,
and so on and so on. It's a mess.

I personally use a flash still when photographing most minifig heads. My light
sources aren't good enough to get clear images without and the camera flash
only makes little reflection dots, not an entire halo. One day I will learn
and become a real photographer and actually figure all this stuff out... for
now? Shrug.

But, seriously, I wouldn't worry about reflections! Focus, color, and clean
backgrounds are much more important.

Thanks!

If you have speedlight (ones that mount to the camera's hot shoe) zoom the
head out to the maximum focal length and try bouncing the light directly off
the ceiling above the piece. I just now saw this thread and would have commented
earlier. This setup will work but if you're new to product photography you're
going to have to practice a lot and move your lights around.

Good luck and show us your results as you go.

This is what I used to do before I retired so i'm a little rusty but I can
walk you through it.

Thankyou for your help although most technical photography things kinda fly right
past me. for me i try to get good lighting and then take the photo and I don't
change any settings on my phone or anything and adjust it as needed in post.
but this is the first test photo I took with it. still need to try and adjust
a lot more things (the part is also damaged so that's why the print is off)
but if you have any suggestions that could work with an iPhone I would gladly
try to test them

I think I saw a comment somewhere in here that you were using your phone. I'm
not sure about android, but if an iphone, tap the screen on the torso in order
to tell it where you want to focus. A square appears. Place your finger outside
that square and slide up and down (to adjust exposure) to try to blow out the
whites of the background. Don't go too nuts because you don't want to
eff up the color of the torso, but this will help bring up the midtones a little,
and then you'll have less to do in the built in editing features.

Or.

Place a sheet of white foam board in front of the torso and move it around in
different configurations to observe how bounce fill can lighten it up to the
point you're satisfied. You're on the right track.

This is with the exposure about 3/4 from the bottom. It still seems a bit dark
I’ll see what I can do in post

Here’s a side by side comparison between the 2 unedited photos. The one with
ex is for with exposure and the one with no is for just focusing. It might just
be me but it seems better with no exposure or less exposure

ok so weird update. I tried without focusing and without exposure and i didn't
change any colours in post and got this (ignore the black background it is also
a png but forums don't like it) and i think its the best one so far. nothing
blurry and the colour isn't that bad (I think but am probably wrong )

You should very obviously see the exposure change on the phone since it shoots
WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). you only have about 3 seconds to take
the photo before the exposure resets. What phone are you using?

You'll get it, it just takes a little time. I'm going to be sorting
for a while so pardon any tardy replies. You're more than welcome to call
or facetime me Sunday afternoon so we can talk things through in real time.

ok so weird update.

Iphone 14 Pro Max

You'll get it, it just takes a little time. I'm going to be sorting
for a while so pardon any tardy replies. You're more than welcome to call
or facetime me Sunday afternoon so we can talk things through in real time.

No worries Thankyou for helping! Unfortunatly I don't do any Bricklink related
stuff on Sundays so I cant do that but ill keep working at it!

Not a problem. The offer stands though. Good luck!

Thanks! I tried what you recommended with the photo within about 3 seconds of
the exposure and it seems to help for some although since I get my camera really
close to the part when I tap on it to focus it then the hands oftentimes get
out of focus

using your tips I've now gotten this one which I am very happy with! Thanks!
(I screenshotted it so it would be on a somewhat transparent background)
Im going to mess around a bit with the colours more in post to see if I can make
it a bit better

AH! Yea, camera phones are horrific at macro photography. The iphone 14 has
a ridiculously versatile camera and I rarely take my Sony's with me anymore
when I travel. Instead of moving the camera in close, move back to about 10-20
inches (sigh... Canadian... 25-50cm) and then zoom in with the camera. I won't
go in to a deep dive on the imaging physics but you'll actually have a better
depth of field and much clearer image.

the funny thing is that method worked perfectly for my old phone (iPhone XR)
but on my new phone it refuses to focus and will become crazy blurry (see example
in photo 1) or sometimes slightly less blurry then that (photo 2) but still very
blurry in comparison the when the lens is closer

Yes, reflections are inevitable unless you diffuse all your light sources. There
are lightboxes with fabric sides designed for this. Otherwise, you can try to
rig something up with something white, thin, and translucent. This will block
some of the light however, so then you will actually need more light sources,
and so on and so on. It's a mess.

alright. I've now got 2 light sources and a light diffuser. now time for
some extensive testing to find the best way to take the photos

Ah, didn't see this one. Where are you placing the torso?

this is where I take the photos. (accidentally more so circled the phone stand
instead of the item stand for the item and that is right behind it)

It's not entirely obvious if its Light Nougat or Tan.

Jen

Thanks! is the second attempt better

Yes. And I like his little halo. It must be a very good clown.

Jen

Perfect! Thankyou! ill use that one!

just curious if you have any tips for avoiding a halo with lego bricks? they
are so shiny and since they are so small you need to get the light close to them

If you plan to take many of these type of photos, an inexpensive light box can
be made - OR can be purchased from Amazon for under $20

I’ve bought several of those in the past and they were not the best from my experience.
I could never get room for photos and the lights would fall of and you could
only get certain angles so I think I’ll try the light diffusion method. Thanks
tho!

Try putting something in front of the light, thin paper, sheet, something translucent.

Maybe, I dunno

I think its great you're dedicating your time, effort and talent to the catalog
from which we all benefit.

It’s lots of fun I can’t stop myself

If you feel this is any better at reflecting the actual colors and hues, please
feel free to use it.

Thankyou for that but I ended up going with this one

Keep up the good work!

Continue bringing your efforts to the forum too, it inspires others

It’s more so since I don’t think I can tell some colours apart (at least for
lego)
But Thankyou for always being the encouraging one on the forums
