I recently found an unopened 7740 electric intercity train set in my parents
garage. It has been in a cupboard there for 40 years, and as seen in the photos
the box has a few scratches, worn edges, and also smells a bit musty!
I would be interested to get a steer on how much or what percentage this superficial
damage to the box affects the price of an otherwise 'new' lego set.

Considering it is the only new sealed box around with no sales history I think
the listing price is whatever you want it to be and the selling price is whatever
you and the buyer agree on.

Condition becomes less of a factor when there is no competition.

Nice find!!!

Nice find (I hope).

I I was the owner I would open the box.

As a potential buyer, not meaning me but someone that collects trains, I wouldn’t
‘trust’ this set.
There is a possibility that contents could be rusty, smelly, not working etc.
Years and years in a moist environment could be quite bad for these parts. Stickers
and instructions can be moisty or even covered by mold.

If the parts are still very nice you can sell these parts in ‘new’ condition
(if you want to be a seller here or at any other website). And they can be quite
valuable when looking at new parts from this set.

That is my advice, maybe others think differently.

Honestly auction sites are better for one offs like this where you have no idea
what the value is.

Personally I'd list it high and then come down over time, but I don't
mind sitting on stock.

Fortunately, you’re light enough not to crush it

That thing is over 40 years old, and in the box brand-new must be at least $800
dollars!

I wold strongly recommend opening it to check condition of parts and completeness
of the set.

It will save you hassles in the long run if you properly identify the condition
of the parts inside the box. Metal parts are susceptible to rust and corrosion
and will lower the value of the box and lead to negative feedback if not stated
in the description for the item.

Cheers ...
