"This part has at least two variants with differences in plastic thickness at
the pin ends. An additional variant has no center slots."

The variant that "has no center slots" is basically the same thing as 4459 by
full description. It's overly confusing. The difference seems to be that
the ridges run the LENGTH of the part AND don't have center slots. The term
"without center slots" needs to be changed if the other part doesn't have
them either, and be given a proper description.

I have tried to better describe the parts in their titles by referring to the
lengths of the friction ridges molded into them rather than referring to the
presence of a slot or not. Since the newest mold design 61332 (which was added
as an alternate item number to 2780) no longer has a slot, the lengths of the
friction ridges are really the defining factor now between the two catalog entries.

Part No: 4459 Name: Technic, Pin with Long Friction Ridges
*
4459 Technic, Pin with Long Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin

I have also added further clarity and details to the additional note on part
2780.

I hope that this alleviates or at least helps some of the confusion.

Cheers,
Randy

I would have named them. "Pin that will not come back out" and "Pin that will"

Maybe there should be a ‘obsolete/superseded’ in names.

Because there’s already the ‘production’ years on the part’s page that give a
strong clue.

I would really like something like a relationship to show parts that replaced
each other. Maybe when we have a structure in the future where there can be
real umbrella parts and we can divide out the alternate numbers into distinct
pieces.

I *really* like that idea.

I would make it some kind of icon or something that could be flagged on the catalog
entry page.

I am going to suggest this as an improvement to the BrickLink team.

Yeah, or a ‘banner’.  Something clear, not like ! *

This is how emoticons should be done, with context!

Maybe if relationship types were added? Like there could be a "supersedes"
relationship that shows as "X supersedes Y" on X's page and "Y was superseded
by X" on Y's page. Not sure what other relationship types would be, but this
would give maximum flexibility without needing to make a huge change.
