I'm a relatively new seller and I've had good luck so far with buyers,
but today one of my buyers has messaged me to tell me that his sets smell like
smoke. I kindly asked for more information and explained to him that if there
is a smoke smell, it did not originate in my home. It's even in my terms
that we are a non smoking household. He is being very adamant about receiving
a refund. But what tipped me off is the format of his message. It didn't
read like his previous communications, and it kind of looked like a copy and
paste form. I'm wondering if he does this to a lot of people? The "smells
like smoke" scam is one of the oldest out there. Even if I don't offer him
a refund, I am worried he will try a chargeback through Paypal. I'm a very
small store, so I can't really afford to lose inventory to scammers. Can
anyone please offer me some advice?

ask him to return the items and offer a refund. not much else you can do as the
default of PayPal and the bank is to side with the buyer. if he returns something
other than what you sent then leave a negative and report him to bricklink

Tell him you'll give him a full refund upon return of the complete order.
That usually stops a lot of scammers as they don't want to give up their
items.

If this is a scammer (who knows ?) then it is possible they will return a set
that smells like smoke. Because they will not be returning the one they purchased,
but a similar set that has issues. Swapping what you sent for what they do not
want is also a form of a scam.

This happened to me years ago. I tried to reason with them to no avail. I finally
just gave a refund and added them to my buyers stop list. They wrote neutral
feedback and I responded to it. I recommend refunding and moving on , add them
to your stop list.

Thank you, everyone, for the advice. I have not heard from him yet today, but
the next message I get from him that mentions the refund, I will tell him to
return the items to me and I will provide a full refund once I verify their contents.
After that, I will add him to my stop list, and try to move on. There will always
be people out there looking to take advantage of others, unfortunately. All we
can do is try our best and learn from the situation. Thanks again!
