but that almost feels like I'm cheating

Take two.  Put them face-to-face / bar-to-bar.
— If they are the same, keep one, and put the other one in the ‘?’ pile.
— If they are not the same, keep the longest and put the other one in the ‘A’
pile.

Take another one and repeat.  At one time, you should be able to tell if ‘?’
is ‘A’ or ‘B’… unless all of those you have are the same variant

Still need to check them one by one… but you should be able to do it not really
looking.

that's a bit how I did it in the past until halfway through I realized I
was lining them up wrong (different fingers that weren't even) and was getting
different measurements

This. Also, when you put them bar-to-bar, "wiggle" them. You should clearly notice
if the bars are same length or if one is longer than the other. I tried explaining
that to my CFO, but she doesn't get that, and leaves these parts for me to
sort out.

I use a plate, placing them along one edge with bar facing in.

Shorter arm reaches half way on second stud, two thirds of stud for longer arm.

Hope that helps.

I tried that but couldn't see any difference in the length. Maybe I got really
unlucky and the entire row was all the same length? I'll try it again and
see if I can tell the difference

I have had batches where they are all the same.

It does work for me if you have both side by side.

You could make a jig like this. If the bar touches the tile on the end, you've
got the 6mm version

Thank you very much! It's super fast now! This should be added as an alternate

Many of them (especially the newer ones) have the part number printed on the
bottom that you can see with a magnifying glass; and the newer ones tend to have
the five digit 'alternate' numbers 43876 & 88072 (as opposed to the older
type with just 4623)... that said, when I sorted the ~3,000 in my inventory at
the time, I found an example of each type and just used those to compare the
others as I sorted through them... it took some time to do it, but I think I
was actively watching a movie or show while I was sorting them (after a while,
you can tell the difference between the two types without even really looking
at them)...

BTW, does anyone know about a cool use for them?

I bought a few too many when I came out of my Dark Ages… but can’t remember why
so many (very cheap maybe?).

Brown ones are good for trees, as you can attach leaves with clips or holes.

Yeah… seems so

Though, IINM, they have thinner trunks… so I get to use more for the same covered
area… but then I get to make more trees for the same covered area.
*sigh* The glass is always both half empty and half full.

Or start collecting keys and build a giant hanging frame for them!

The only other serious use I have for them and lots of other clips and bars is
when aligning things at an angle. I very rarely use them with the hole plate
as a tow bar.

Yeah, I think I bought them with that as an idea¹ (especially to use them with
bricks with studs on side)… but actually always found a better, smaller solution.

¹ Undoubtedly an idea I had at night and wrote while half asleep… and then in
the morning I realized I confused the pencil and the thermometer.

as they were cheap (0.5p each) and I had a really good idea for them (but cannot
remember what it was). At least they can be used as normal 1x2 bricks for any
structures where you don't see the reverse and are ideal for building bases
if covering them in plates.

Ouch!
At least, I’ve only a couple hundreds (all colours mixed) 4623b.

It reminds me I bought a few

Now I’ve a full drawer (… a bit more than 1000 not used; and I’m not into Technic).

They would make a great plinko machine.

but that almost feels like I'm cheating

I guess the issue is do you like sorting?

I take a more pragmatic view. If it takes 5 seconds to check each part, that
is 720 an hour. Most colours are 1c / 1p parts for used. That is one hour of
sorting for $7.20 of stock. And you still need to add picking time if they sell.
Alternatively 720 weigh about 350g, so if chucked into bulk lots are worth about
$3-4. I'd go for half the cash with no work instead of double the stock value
for an hour.

I'd check the PG first for valuable colours. If neither part in a specific
colour is valuable like yellow or red, they are going in the bulk. If one or
both parts in a specific colour are valuable, I might start checking them. If
the first handful are all cheap variants, I'd give up. Of course you could
add some to a store then if you want breadth but I doubt these parts really drive
orders. It might be useful to have some in each colour to help get want list
hits but sorting the rest is probably not worth the time, especially if you have
tons of more valuable parts to sort. Unless you really enjoy sorting, then keep
them for the challenge.

Defeatist but practical. But when there are 5+ years worth of stock of many of
them at penny prices, that is the route I'd take.

That makes complete sense but there are some reasons as to why it's better
to list it for example if I list all the common parts, as well as the rare parts,
is if someone is looking on the buy all page and is just looking for which store
has the most lots on their list then mine would be at a higher level. Also for
me I usually don't price anything below .03 (only a few exceptions) so that
does help a bit.

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of sorting but I've ultimately decided
my plan (which might change in the future) is to list every used part I have
and not buy any more and then to put them on higher % sales to drive orders and
increase my new parts supply and if I have more bricks it will be more fun

You could list them all under either the "a" or "b" variant with a note in
the description that they you could get either variant. I see that in both store
terms as well as near worthless part listings with variants like these.

Yeah, although that can annoy some buyers if they want the specific part. And
it is probably OK for large stores with large storage capacity where they don't
mind stock maybe sitting for years. But I think I'd still take the bulk weight
value, adding a couple of dozen per bag of other cheap parts I cannot be bothered
to sort and store.

My trick is to put them on top of a 2x4 brick. When connected fully, the bar
on the 5mm version will line up precisely with the middle of the next stud row,
while the bar on the 6mm version will be offset with the middle of the next stud
row. It goes pretty quickly, though it did take an hour or so to check the hundreds
I had when I initially separated them.

Don't bother because they're only worth a penny? Some things are not
worth the time. You end up paying yourself $1 per hour to sell something like
this when you factor in time to list, pull, pack, refund because your sent the
wrong one...

I can't say I totally disagree with you. I've started listing some cheaper
parts (as low as 10 cents sometimes) because used lots cost nearly twice as much
as they did last year.
