Hi there! I signed up properly to this website today, after having my Lego appreciation
revived by Lego Star Wars games and YouTubers.
I don't quite know how best to use this site. I'm just kind of looking
for cool/nostalgic sets and figures that I might be able to afford, without having
any solid ideas for displays/MOCs or anything right now and quite a low budget.
Basically, I'm just doing what I used to do: looking through catalogues and
finding out about things.
I'm also using eBay to get back into Lego, and I can't seem to do here
what I can do there: search for random collections and bundles and what have
you and check for cheap ones. This place seems more specific, more detailed,
as if it's better for veteran collectors. Not that it's bad, just challenging
to approach as a newbie.
What do you guys recommend I do here? How do I get the most out of this cool
website? I moved into uni accomodation a month ago and don't have a lot of
space or any Lego from home. Any tips appreciated!

I would start with the help pages . . .

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?viewAll=Y

Specifically the New User Tutorial section

maybe these two articles
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2215 (not updated since 2013 and the
UI looks different but gives you some concepts)

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=176 (text info on Finding Items from
the bottom of the main page)

Welcome to Bricklink!

Figuring our how to utilize the "Want" feature is essential to finding exactly
what you are looking for. There are also websites with MOCs like https://rebrickable.com/
that have part lists that will export to Bricklink. The "Easy Buy" feature is
amazing and will basically search all the stores that meet your search criteria
and build shopping carts for you.

Unfortunately you are not going to find "cheap" on Bricklink. This is a marketplace
for individual pieces and you are paying a premium to get the exact parts in
the exact color that you need.

If you want cheap LEGO, your best bet is Craigslist, FB marketplace, estate sales,
and I've even found school districts (US) that auction off old LEGO kits
they aren't using anymore.

Good Luck!

I recommend not using bricklink for buying just yet. Buy sets or maybe a a
few job lots on ebay or facebook. Then play with them. And play some more. Find
out which type and colours of parts and which minifigs and themes you like using
the most. Then start looking up those parts on bricklink. Start looking what
other interesting parts and figures come in sets from the themes you like. Then
place a few small domestic orders. Once you've done that, start learning
about wants lists. Once you've figured those out you can start building more
complicated orders and may need to think about buying internationally.

I'm a long time LEGO buyer and set reseller on Ebay and I source a vast majority
of my parts through BL sellers both domestic and international to complete my
sets. This is a fantastic resource for figuring out parts and the community knowledge
here is second to none. It might be wiser to start with some Ebay lots as YorBrick
mentioned and figure out what your interests are. It can be less expensive and
allow you to play around with the sets.

If you get an Ebay lot and there are parts missing you can use BL features to
look up the part and start a Wanted List that you can add to in order to complete
a set. The GUI on BL is really easy to use.
