had customer inform me the Light Bluish Gray plate we sold him was actually /Light
Gray instead.
the part was a 7x6 boat wedge & color was on par with the other 3,000-ish other
Light Bluish Gray pieces we sorted out by color. .
so confused as to what gray is is perplexing us..

we offered full refund to buyer, & suspended all gray brick sales until we can
figure out what gray is.
- Light Gray
- Light Bluish Gray
- Dark Gray
- Dark Bluish Gray

any helpful tips on how to sort gray properly..??.

Did the part have stud notches?

That part might not even exist in Light Bluish Gray. I think set 10030 has an
error in it. Two alternate 7x6 wedge plates? That doesn't look right. In
addition to looking at some parts under sunlight, it might also help to familiarize
yourself with mold numbers, that way you know that part 2625 only appeared in
certain colors, while Light Bluish Gray only exists in part 50303. I've heard
of LBG fading to where it looks like LG, but not the other way around...

Newish LG can look very similar to faded LBG

That’s the problem. I cannot find a Part Color Code for this part, nor does it
make much sense for this set to have two alternate plates. I believe the LBG
2625 part is an error.

To be honest, you should be completely sure of all your colors and common variants
before you sell here. You should have a comparison part for all colors if you
aren't familiar enough to identify them on sight.

If you don't have a color chart yet, find a part with a decorated pattern
like a printed tile or a torso that only comes in that color.

Uh, so your posts (now deleted for some reason) declared that you were guessing
and needed to learn the differences between the grays. So, yeah, as a veteran
seller on here I think you should know your product before you sell. It's
a site-wide reputation thing. "I tried to buy something on BrickLink, but the
seller there didn't know their colors, so I gave up."

I do understand that it can be a tough process for those coming to it without
a history with LEGO. If you didn't just spend ** number of years playing
with the stuff, how are you to know what you don't know? It's also really
easy to make mistakes with all the crazy specifics of our product. So, my suggestion
was to make up for lack of familiarity with preparation and research, that's
all.

Good luck with your shop,
Jen

+1

LEGO just happens to be one of the most complicated toys ever produced.

Despite backwards compatibility that spans decades, there are many many variants
both large and small among parts moulding, colors, and other factors.

Most any other consumer product does NOT enjoy such continuity of production
as Lego products. Automobiles are a great example -- a vehicle purchased
one year is not the same as one produced in previous years. Styling is changed,
component parts are changed, even available colors change year to year with no
regard to compatibility. Two identical vehicles supposed to be identical vehicles
purchased months apart may not even be the same, with different components.
And when you add buyer options and various trim packages, the number of differences
continues to grow.

What I am saying is -- LEGO does a great job at maintaining continuity of
parts and colors. But the changes and variations that have occurred do matter
to Lego builders to varying degrees. How much people care about these variances
is up to them. But resellers of LEGO do need to take these variances into consideration
if they wish to remain successful at having happy buyers.

Selling Lego is not a simple endeavor. Having a passion or love of Lego may
be as important as the desire to make money. A get-rich-quick scheme with Lego
products is not the reality for most sellers, but being successful at selling
Lego is possible.

As for posting here in the BL forum to get help and guidance -- most BL users
are helpful and friendly and freely share help and advice even to sellers who
could be considered their own competition. I like to think of other BL sellers
as colleagues rather than competitors, since no single BL shop can possibly satisfy
all buyers.

BrickLink as a community is a pretty good one. There are buyers and sellers
and forum participants and countless people who have volunteered thousands of
hours of effort over many years to make this site better every day for the benefit
of all users.

This is so true! I only have 10 years of experience here but sometimes I still
need a reference for a colour that I seldom see (trans purple, trans neon green
to name a few). I use the Periodic Table of LEGO colours from WLWYB (link: https://wlwyb.com/shop/periodic-table-of-lego-colors/)
when I'm not sure.

As a side note: I'm having eyesight problems (no colour blindness luckily).
My store is on the North side of my house, so has the best light. I still avoid
to pack orders with artificial light.

That set was released in 2002, the same time that LEGO started changing over
from the old greys to the bluish greys. That set was a crap shoot as far as what
actual colors you would get.

I think what here4bricks614 is suggesting is that the LBG ones included in that
set were the version with stud notches, while the LG would have been without.
That would definitely account for the apparent rarity of the LBG version without
stud notches.

stud notches.

Correct. Part 50303 has a first LBG PCC of 4295569. This suggests that this part
was created in 2005, a little after old Gray had been retired. This set ran until
December of 2007, well into the era of the new colors. Around 2004ish, the 50303
mold had been introduced, replacing 2625. It is very likely that the inventory
has an error in it, so that should be fixed. Newer copies of this set would have
had the 2004 colors and the new molds.

Speaking of just my own experience, I find that the variation is much easier
to see in daylight so I leave those batches for daytime. Sometimes discolored
LBG can look like LG, same with DBG/DG. As I buy mostly used bulk, I also I like
to ask previous owner what year range the Lego was purchased and sometimes can
get clues from a buy that might have older instructions or printed/stickered
pieces that point towards years of origin.

Another good ID tool

Good luck!

had customer inform me the Light Bluish Gray plate we sold him was actually /Light

In my experience, DG and DBG are much easier to distinguish than LG and LBG.
Just speaking for myself, of course, and YMMV

Perhaps the buyer can send you a photo of the underside of the part? That might
help clear things up.
