| Hello!
As a relatively new BL store owner, I have been trying to keep my inventory accurate
by ensuring that every part has packing dimensions listed in the BL catalog.
However, is there any benefit to doing so?
I had assumed that if a part has "?" for the packing dimensions, it would therefore
be excluded as eligible for Instant Checkout, since the BL ordering system would
not be able to determine that a part with "?" dimensions can fit within the size
dimension restrictions I have set for Instant Checkout for certain packaging
sizes.
I have submitted a number of Catalog Change Requests to add dimensions for parts
recently, so I would like to know if I should keep doing so in order to ensure
my entire inventory can be accurately determined if eligible for Instant Checkout
or not.
Thank you!

There are parts of the world that have shipping methods determined by volume,
so packing dimensions are important. I believe weight is used a majority of the
time, but volume has its place. Someone else who really runs a store can correct
me if that statement is incorrect.
Cheers,
Randy

None of my shipping methods use volume, but I kick anything approaching 2 lbs
to manual checkout. If I got a lot of giant orders, I would try to automate
that, but for me they are fairly uncommon.

The general answer is Yes, we do encourage sellers to add missing dimensions
to the catalog. This is why there is a special link on your My Inventory page
to take you right to the form. We want to make it easy to contribute.
As to how effective packing dimensions will be for the shipping calculator, that
really depends on the item in question. Most parts are small enough that it won’t
make a difference in most cases. But large parts, books, gear items, catalogs,
and especially instructions - these are critical.
One aspect of our system that is not widely known or understood is the effect
of packing dimensions on weight bound items - these are small parts. Even though
an item is weight bound and will not cause a direct issue with size, when the
volume calculation is performed at the end of the process, packing dimensions
are used to calculate the total liquid dimension (volume). Small parts containing
a lot of empty space may trigger a volume issue even though the weight was within
the limits.
So it’s important to have as many dimensions in our system as possible. They
are all useful to some degree.
To say nothing of their primary function in the catalog, which is to identify
the item.
