I am noticing that more and more news sets are being delayed in uploading into
BL. There are many new sets that have been out for 4 months or more, that are
not ready in BL.
Does this have something to do with the Lego/BL merger?

Don't think so.

But perhaps could, in a more productive fashion

Do you mean available as a catalog entry or as a part out?

I am really curious which sets do you mean? I have nearly run out of things to
inventory. There is not one normal retail set left from 2021 and only 4 left
undone from the January 1 release. (2 of which I am actually working on, just
saying.)

There were a number of Super Mario and Monkie Kid sets that had not been inventoried
for a while by anyone, but one of our esteemed contributors did pretty much all
of them over the last two months. (Thank you, Jen!)

So I am curious which sets you are specifically talking about. If you let me
know, we could probably get someone on it quickly. And you could always contribute
missing inventories yourself.

Cheers,
Randy

I am curious how this process hasn't been almost automated at this time.
I have contributed a couple inventories to the catalog in the past (the largest
of which was the UCS Slave I) and I can definitely attest to the amount of work
that goes into manually doing that. I haven't done one in years just due
to the shear amount of time it takes and I greatly greatly appreciate all the
people that do take the time to inventory these sets.

However, Lego puts the whole inventory list in the form of color part codes in
the back of the instruction books (with the notable exception of the extra parts).
Is it not possible to just enter all those part codes and generate the inventory
list easily? Then all you would need to do it approve new parts/minifigures,
check for alternate parts and variations, and add the extra part info.

Obviously, that's still time consuming but I would think you could do a
set in about an hour or less using that method.

I guess I'm just not sure what people's process is for inventorying anymore.
I would be super happy to help in designing some form of automated inventory
maker if anyone wants/needs it.

It’s already been working simpler than that for years (well before TLG bought
BL): You start the inventorying with a “skeletton” inventory already in from
LEGO, and you check the variants with a simple dropdown list.

The problem is with new parts, stickers, and minifigures that need to be entered
in the catalogue first.  And that can’t be automated (pictures…).

We already have the data for our use. The Add Inventory pages have been updated
to include PCC's. The system works very well!

However, a submitter must do the following:

1) Note any PCC's that aren't in our catalog yet. Check these for new
molds and/or add the codes to the catalog.

2) Add any new parts, any new decorated parts, and the sticker sheet to the catalog.
Create new images if needed. We can use LEGO renders a lot of the time but they
are not good for patterned or transparent parts.

3) Check the minifig builds to see if they already exists in the catalog, and
add them if they do not. Create new images if needed.

4) Build (or count) through the entire set to check for common part variants
and extras. Add these to the inventory.

5) Add the minifig inventory if you are able.

None of these tasks can be automated and therein lies where the time is spent.
Creating images and naming new parts takes the most time and effort. LEGO gets
away with naming stuff 'MINI UPPER PART, NO. 5909' We do a much better
job!

So, the time it takes to add a set varies widely. I doubt anything more than
200pcs could be fully completed within an hour. It's still fun if you
are someone who enjoys working with LEGO and photography already, like me!

Here is a very relevant post that I just wrote a few days ago:

That should give you the answers you are looking for.
