Hi all. Two purchasing questions:

1. When you purchase bricks from a vendor and those bricks are on your wanted
list, does Bricklink reduce the count of those specific brick after the purchase?
(or eliminate them if all of a particular brick type/color has been acquired?)

2. Why do some vendors place limits on the number of lots they will sell unless
you acquire a passcode from them to purchase beyond that limit? Would there be
a reason to deny someone the passcode if asked for?

Not automatically.

There's a feature to do this, however... I should search the Help for you
but can't right now. Maybe just after having placed the order?

Sellers do what they want, basically.
Bad seller, change seller

There’s Apply Order, that you can do on any Wanted List (button at the top of
the WL).  It changes the Have fields.

The problem is that you can apply the same order multiple times to multiple WLs.
It has no memory.

To help you more...

It's legitimate; for many parts the labor/salary cost to pick a part is higher
than the margin (lol) made on certain parts (ex: some are 0.02$ each or less).

You can easily calculate: 30s to walk inside your shop and pick to this lot,
count 1 part (or 9), it takes time - and then calculate the corresponding salary
for those 30s or 1 minute (depending the counting)...

So sellers can enforce to sell for a minimum number (in lots), like 10 or
100, just like in some brick and mortar shops. I don't know in your Country
but here often you've to buy 25 screws in a bag, you can't buy 1 separately.

Also, this can be interesting for the buyer, because the tiered prices; you've
an incentive if you buy 10, or 100.

And if the seller doesn't want to give you a bypass code, it's just he
works like this, it's his policy and he's free to do so.

HTH?

Here's some good reading, in-between replies: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1

When buying the items in your Wanted List in the Buy Page, BrickLink will
automatically account for each item’s Have Quantity and look for the remaining
Wanted Quantity.

There are all kinds of vendors here on BL. They run the gamut from very part-time
hobby members to full-time proper businesses. Lot limits generally speaking,
are used by sellers to control order types. Having said that, you can fill-in
the blanks as to the "why".

Would there be a reason to deny someone the passcode if asked for?

Yes, there are reasons. Whatever they may be, they're their reasons. You
should receive the courtesy of a reply to your request, nonetheless. Maybe something
along the lines of

Thank you for your interest in our store and we apologize for not being able
to accommodate your shopping needs at this time.

Like I mentioned, there are many types of vendors here, these are the opinions
of just one.

Soooo I *don't* have to manually update the count in my Wanted List? (I'm
using just the one list, tackling one project at a time due to the expense, and
I'm wondering what happens if I don't update the list after a purchase
from one vendor before buying from the next, if I cannot buy all the needed parts
in one go and need to split up the purchases over time. I.e. I can afford to
buy from Vendor A today, but Vendor B will have to wait until my next paycheck
in 2 weeks, and if their inventory changes... basically I'm trying not to
lose track of what I have and need and not make redundant purchases that drain
my budget needlessly)

That quote only says that, when you go buy a WL, BL will look for and auto-fill
with a quantity of Want minus Have.

The Have quantity is only updated sort-of-automatically if you use Apply
Order
.
With only one WL, and if you remember yourself which of your orders you applied,
you can use it.

And there’s no way to change the Want quantity automatically.

I understand.

I know very little about the Want List. Never really used it much, not in any
meaningful way, that is. My point was to offer the idea of helping yourself
while awaiting inputs from others. There are those here, that do know the benefits
and limitations of the Want List very well. The Sylvain's (who have replied
to your post) I'd imagine being two of them.

The site's come along way. Today, there are answers to most site-questions
concisely laid out within the help pages.

Good luck and have fun.
