| Are there no assemblies, containing the axle and wheels, for this part ...
The similar brick has an assembly ...
I ask because the axle and tires are quite firmly attached to one another.

Only as and combinations thereof. I've never seen these come loose.
Apparantly, came unassembled in only.

All the variants of 122c01 appear to have red wheels. The two examples I have
here have white wheels. Does that imply new catalog entries are needed ?

122c02 has white wheels, so disregard.

| There is no assembly because the clip is closed, and you cannot unclip the axle.
If you look on alternate picture of you will the both version (open
or closed clip)

You can pull a wheel off and slide the axle through the closed clips.

Pulling as hard as I can, they do not seem to want to detach. You can remove
the tires from the wheels, but the wheels seem firmly attached to the axels.
I am also unable to rotate one wheel without forcefully rotating the opposite
wheel.

| I've done it successfully a couple of times, once when the wheel was cracked
and once when the axle was bent and I used a screwdriver to prise off one of
the wheels (I took the wheel from the bent axle to replace the cracked wheel
from the nice straight axle)

Yes, I hate throwing things away, especially Lego - if I can salvage a part I
will
