| What do you think about selling used pieces on consignment?
Could it be a good business? Is it profitable? Is there any store out there that
already does it?
I just had a shower thought about it, and it made me think. What if I could source
used pieces for free from people wanting to sell their used Lego?
I handle everything, from cataloging to shipping in exchange of a good chunk
of profits. I keep track of everything that sells and every month I send my suppliers
their take on their sold pieces.
There´s a lot of spare and free time on my daily routine, which I often want
to put on use in something Bricklink related anyways.
Wanna hear the opinion of the wonderful Bricklink forums dwellers.
Cheers

| One thing you should know is that you need physical access to the items you're
offering (but I guess your plan was to get the items and take it to your place).
I think it will be really time-consuming to keep track which items belong to
which person. I can think of different methods:
1) Create different lots for the same part/color and use the remark field to
identify the person that should get money for it. Usually I avoid stores that
have the same part/color in different lots, maybe there are others that do the
same, so you shouldn't favor this option
2) Create a single lot for a part/color and keep track of which persons this
part belongs to in the remark field as well (like, when you have 50x Black Brick
1 x 4, then in the remarks you have "20 from person A, 18 from person B, 12 from
Person C").
3) Organize everything in different physical boxes (1 for each person) and keep
track of it outside of bricklink.
Anyway, every method is very time consuming, you might just want to buy parts
from persons who sell bulk Lego and organize everything on your own.
I also doubt that persons will let you take their Lego stuff with you, without
you paying for it and only promise that they will get money as soon as you sell
them.

Someone I know runs a consignment shop. She has been there for over 10 years,
and this is how she handles her inventory (mostly clothes) ...
(1) The shop owner has complete control over the pricing.
(2) If it sells, within the first 90 days, the consignee gets 1/2 of the shelf
price.
(3) beyond 90 days, the shop owner can discount it.
(4) after 120-180 days, the shop owner can send it out as discards (and the consignee
gets nothing).
In the consignment biz, you have to keep inventory turning. There is nothing
worse than seeing the same inventory, month after month after month. I've
watched other shops close for this reason. You have to keep it fresh.

| One of the biggest differences I see between a Bricklink consignment shop and
bricks & mortar shops is the length of time the seller isn't certain of a
sale.
Is the Paypal dispute window 180 days? Do you dare pay your consignee in advance
of that window closing knowing your buyer may lodge a Paypal dispute against
you? Will a consignee give up their stock, watch that stock get sold after however
long and then wait another 6 months for payment?
I guess as with all business arrangements the need for good documentary agreements
and evidence could become crucial.
Nice idea though if you can make it work, get big quick for no capital outlay.

Profit could be low that your handling would almost be free. 😉

| You are probably better off buying their unwanted lego, so you own everything
you sell.

This. Will be a whole lot less hassle in general.

| Besides the fact that it would create huge headaches for you as the BL seller,
I don't think you could get anyone to agree to sell to you under consignment.
It's far too easy to offload tons of Lego on local marketplaces.
A seller could maybe make $200 off of a 20 pound lot with figs on local market,
or maybe you would pay them $250 over 2 years? No one would like that deal.
