I obtained a mostly SW lot of figs that included all the orig Cloud City characters.
All except Luke checks out authentic, as far as I can tell.

However, Luke here has the proper unique legs, but the hips are not printed,
and they're tan, not brown. The hips appear to be genuine Lego and the legs
are firmly attached to clean pins. That is, no damaged pins you often see when
legs have been pulled off the hips.

I suppose this could be custom, but all the other figs to the set are original,
so it doesn't make sense. I haven't found anything like this online,
either, so if it's custom, it's one-off custom.

So, what do you think this is? Custom? Some variant? A prototype? Maybe salvaged
legs from an original attached to a new hips element (but if so, why not brown)?

Thanks,
Adam

I've seen a LOT of hips and legs switched in my years of sorting thru bulk
lots. I wouldn't put it past anyone to switch it out. Maybe they felt the
brown hips looked out of place? 13 year old me would have done that for sure!

That's understandable, and unfortunate. In used to seeing SW clone troopers
get the Sharpie treatment, but not this. Poor Luke's brown belt and cod piece
are lost.

Any value in the legs by themselves, in case others have leg assemblies with
intact hips but damaged legs? I wonder...

I doubt it is a variant or prototype.

Maybe someone didn't like the brown crotch / backside that having different
colour hips imposes. I used to switch legs on castle figs where the hips and
legs didn't match colour. They just look weird to me. It is possible to do
it without damage if you use a bit of heat to help get the legs off the hip pins.

Would I do it on a now expensive figure? No way. But if someone did it at the
time, I can understand why.

This reminds me of this joke:

A pirate ship will soon attack a merchant ship, the merchant-captain says to
the cabin boy:
Captain: “Boy, bring my red shirt.”
Boy: “You red shirt, sir?”
Captain: “Yes, so that if I’m wounded, it won’t show and the men will keep their
courage!”

A few weeks later, several pirate ships are closing in.
The cabin boy: “Shall I get your red shirt, sir?”
Captain: “No, bring me my brown trousers.”

Yeah, they obviously thought Luke was scared when he finds out who his father
is.

Ones like this, I don't know what the red was meant to be. Superman style
underpants? They look so much better with black legs and hips. I used to switch
the black/red with red/black to get monochrome leg assemblies.

I don’t know either… a belt?  A codpiece?
I guess they added colour before LEGO could stamp hips.

Overpants?

I did the reverse… mainly to have uniformity in the uniforms… to depict a time
when there was no real uniform.  Kids….

Probably the castle chappie was the inventor of the thong, and it took off in
a Galaxy far far Away

I've heard this one before (GoT I think). Your telling is better because
it's short and sweet. Thanks!

Yeah, I suspect you're right. What kid would think of the collectable value
of plain ol' Luke? Brown hips = belt. Brown crotch and backside = accident,
as in the joke below.
