I acquired a bulk lot recently and it included instruction and parts for

Set No: 7413 Name: Passage of Jun-Chi
*
7413-1 (Inv) Passage of Jun-Chi
96 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 3 Gear, 2003
Sets: Adventurers: Orient Expedition
.

It included a number of other sets as well, so I went ahead and printed inventory
sheets from BL at the time so that I could pick through the parts and sort them
out accordingly. After sorting everything out, I'm rebuilding the set just
to make sure again that everything is there and noticed in step 9 (image) that
it uses

Part No: 30389 Name: Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical (Undetermined Type)
*
30389 Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Hinge
. The inventory that I have printed has

Part No: 30389b Name: Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical and Axle Hole
*
30389b Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical and Axle Hole
Parts: Hinge
and now
I see on the current inventory that it's [p=30389c]. I see that all three
versions of this part were in use in 2003 when this set was produced, but want
to make sure that I have a valid inventory if I try to put this set up for sale.
Can someone confirm as the parts that I had for building this inventory included
one of 30389 and one of 30389c. Since I need to acquire two of a like part for
the set, I'd like to get the correct version.

That's what the catalog says because that is what the data says. But the
data for those parts is not correct for all sets. We are slowly figuring it out,
though.

Part No: 30389b Name: Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical and Axle Hole
*
30389b Hinge Brick 2 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical and Axle Hole
Parts: Hinge
is the latest version of the part and was definitely not around in 2003. Any
inventory containing that part before ~2010 is highly likely to be wrong.

[p=30389c]
was the first version of the part to contain an axle hole. It was definitely
introduced around 2002, so the transition period between 30389 and 30389c would
have been then.

Since this set was released in 2003, it might have contained either of those
two versions, however we have solid evidence from sealed set that the set you
are restoring contained 30389c. The instructions were probably created in 2002
when the new version of the part with axle hole had yet to be released.

Thanks for the through response. I figured that it was part of an inventory
validation recently, but was still curious. If 30389b was not introduced until
2010ish, would it be valid to update the production date on that part? Obviously
not knowing the exact date makes it harder, but even to get it closer than the
2002 that is currently set.

As for my set, I'll acquire 30389c to complete it. Thanks again.

The dates automatically change as inventories are updated. It just depends on
how long it takes to find enough data to verify the required changes.

No problem. Have fun!

Here is a Brickshelf gallery for unboxing the set from 2006:

https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=201779

It shows the x version of that part (not +)
