There is a new variant for

Part No: 6641 Name: Technic Changeover Catch
*
6641 Technic Changeover Catch
Parts: Technic
that was just released that has a completely new type of axle hole.

It has Design ID 51149: https://brickset.com/parts/design-51149

The catalog team is considering whether to add this as a new part to the catalog
or just add an alternate item number to 6641.

POLL:

What would you like to see done?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Cheers,
Randy

For all the axle holes variants I would go with if the axle you put in is at
the same angle, then only one entry with additional note. If the axle is not
in the same angle, then split the part.

There doesn’t seem to be a fuctionnal difference, so alternate item number and
added to the list of variants not (yet?) recognized.

I think I would care as a non-technic builder. I can picture it as some gothic
cathedral detail, and then the new variant wouldn't look as good.

However I am not a builder so anything is fine by me

Yeah I considered the value of the visual differences… but that part mostly comes
in Red.

I think this part goes along with many of the other non-differenciated variants
we have now.
IIUC, their being split will be considered later, when the unwritten rules will
have eventually be written down.
So, I’d rather wait for these rules…
… unless this poll is some kind of feeler to know how to orient the writting
of said rules?

However I am not a builder so anything is fine by me

Lucky you

This new axle hole does not hold a bar securely. The old version does. That makes
the difference functional as well.

Oh okay.  Maybe that’s why they changed the mould.
Thanks for the info

I would prefer separate entries to be able to buy the old variant if I would
need it to complete an older set. The axle holes also remind me of

Part No: 4265a Name: Technic Bush 1/2 Toothed, Four Interior Ridges
*
4265a Technic Bush 1/2 Toothed, Four Interior Ridges
Parts: Technic
and

Part No: 4265b Name: Technic Bush 1/2 Toothed, Two Interior Ridges
*
4265b Technic Bush 1/2 Toothed, Two Interior Ridges
Parts: Technic
and these parts have their own entries. And the difference is clearly visible
so it should not bee too difficult to separate them.

I agree with a/b type variant. Even if the functionality is the same, I hate
mixing visually different parts in a build. Often I don't care which one
I actually use, but I want them to all be the same anyway.

In addition, I do not like mixing variants with a visual difference, so I would

An A/B type variant would be my vote. However, do not combine them into the same
item as this piece was...

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3794b#T=C

This is very annoying when trying to assemble a set and the piece while technically
the same has a visual difference on the bottom.

Can we work on getting some designated A/B entries for some of the parts that
haven't had any for years (or have one variant designated but not the other)
of which there are actually functional differences?

That is a catalog project for another time. I would like to keep this thread
focused on the topic at hand.
