Have this item in hand. Any chance we can get it approved for the catalog now?

Thanks!

This seems quite backwards given it is on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay...BrickLink
is only shooting the site visibility in the foot to not follow major retails
early release on this kit.

BrickLink has always followed the official release dates of The LEGO Group for
adding new sets, new minifigures, and new parts to the catalog regardless of
what is happening anywhere else. Before the site was owned by TLG, this was done
out of a sign of respect for the company and helped to solidify a solid relationship
between BrickLink and TLG. Now that the site *is* owned by TLG, I am quite sure
that this process will not change.

You are correct, Randy. We are currently working on a way, in fact, to make sure
that every item is released exactly on time, not early, not late. In fact, we
now have a rule about this in the Seller Terms of Service:

Items Pending Official Release:

Items may not be listed prior to their official LEGO release date, either
as custom lots or under related catalog entries.

I think Jonathan is questioning or revisiting the practice, in citing the various
competitors that currently allow for prerelease date sales. I mean, he's
been around long enough to know the practice here.

I could be wrong, guys, but it's how I read it anyway.

The question was not "Has the catalog policy changed on adding items before their

that has been set in stone for as long as I can remember and is even now part
of the ToS.

Good night.

I've been around long enough that BrickLink's policy was actualy NOT
the current one (of which I never knew it changed) with items added solely based
on in-hand verification. As most of the items I've had pre-release were
well over 10 years ago, this topic never came up to bring me up to speed. Have
rarely been the lucky one to find a pre-release items before. All distant past
items were approved to the catalog based on a photo of it being in-hand posted
here, so I followed the format I have always done, albeit a few times only in
the past.

So apparently in light of this policy which has been changed now, other items
I've asked for catalog approval since the few those many years past, I must
have been lucky enough to have the newer items have no known release, as they
were added quite quickly post-request. Or maybe they were just slow to be approved
to begin with.

However, and back to my initial response, given TLG takeover of the site I can
see the policy not changing, but also still question the logic. We are not TLG
sellers, nor are we an outlet for only "current" LEGO items, but rather a network
of users selling both past and present (and should be future when available)
items, in both used and new varieties. If the current policy stands it only
enforces pushing sales to other channels (albeit for 2 weeks in this case) due
to "policy" that does not fit what BrickLink is at the core, a market place for
ALL things LEGO (emphasis on "all" as the current policy eliminates some
LEGO from being sold here). This by effect creates a market-deterrent (albeit
minor) from BrickLink being all it can be for the "King of ALL Things
LEGO" (again stress on the "all") as currently eBay is "king" for this set.

In the end not mine, but BrickLink's loss this time around, and TLG's
too by effect. Had 3 to sell, but policy means it will be 3 lost sales on the
BL site and sale fees in TLG's pocket. Is what it is, but it really makes
no sense since the "Official Release" is clearly incorrect data now with the
set is on the market in many notable places and quantity.

If TLG cannot control their major retail partners, please do not make us be held
to a rule they do not enforce elsewhere. It's simply not professional and
solely political at that point. We're too small to be able to get away with
breaking rules, but Amazon and Walmart can do it with no repercussions. Nice.

Again I realize the policy is unlikely to be reviewed or changed, but it still
makes no sense given the circumstance of this set already being on store shelves.

I have been around a few years less than you, but this has always been the policy
that I can remember since I joined the site in 2009. I suspect that the policy
changed when it was able to be easily determined when official release dates
were scheduled by TLG. In the early days of BrickLink, this was probably information
that was not readily available, so I could see the policy at that time being
that the item had to be in hand.

However, and back to my initial response, given TLG takeover of the site I can
see the policy not changing, but also still question the logic. We are not TLG

More people are always going to know about Amazon and ebay, etc., than those
who know about BrickLink. It is what it is, and listing a few pre-release items
ahead of time is not going to change that. I could see the old BrickLink caring
more about having the sales be on this platform, but TLG do not need the money
from this site. They make way more money by you having already purchased the
products.

The "Official Release" is not incorrect data. If you go to LEGO.com, you still
can only pre-order this set. It states quite plainly that it will not begin shipping
until August 1. The fact that retailers that have product on hand do not follow
TLG's recommended release dates does not change the fact that LEGO itself
has an official release date.

If TLG cannot control their major retail partners, please do not make us be held
to a rule they do not enforce elsewhere. It's simply not professional and
solely political at that point. We're too small to be able to get away with
breaking rules, but Amazon and Walmart can do it with no repercussions. Nice.

Although I understand where you are coming from, this site is basically TLG now
for better or worse. They own the site and they own the Terms of Service. And
the Terms of Service that you, me, and everyone else agreed to state that items
will not be added to the site until the official release date set by TLG.

It will be approved to the catalog on its official release date of August 1.

This seems quite backwards given it is on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay...BrickLink
is only shooting the site visibility in the foot to not follow major retails
early release on this kit.

Jonathan

If he has been around long enough to know the practice here, then he should have
known to not ask for a set to be added to the catalog before its release date,
correct?

Focus on the terms "question or revisiting" Randy

Again, I could be misreading his intent.

I think you are.

The question was not "Has the catalog policy changed on adding items before their
official release date?" That would signify questioning or revisiting a policy
that has been set in stone for as long as I can remember and is even now part
of the ToS.

In citing the various and specific competitors currently allowing for the practice,
he's not asking if it's changed, but rather can it be.

Can thought be given to it, is how I read his intent.

It's understandable, he's sitting on some new exciting inventory and
is perhaps anxious to get the ball rolling with it. We've all been there.
Especially in seeing the other sites allowing for the sales.

But let's say I misunderstood, Randy. I so often do

Good night.

I think on this one you did misunderstand this particular one. All he said was
"Have this item in hand. Any chance we can get it approved for the catalog now?".
I dont see anything there indicating a desire to revisit or asking for a possible
policy change, it sounds more like he just wants it to be approved so he can
sell them - that's pretty much about all I see anyways. But I guess it is
just one of those "he said, she said" things and it has been explained that it
is basically a no can do on putting it up early which I think is very reasonable
considering now that BL is owned by The Lego Group and they do not sell sets
before the official release date regardless if other stores do so it makes complete
sense that they would not want BL to sell them either.

Then the policy wording is incorrect.
Those retailers did not get their inventory off the back of a truck;
TLG officially sold the stock to those retailers;
TLG made it available for general release, not the retailers;
TLG is not taking any steps to prevent those items from being sold to consumers;
Those retailers are not selling fake goods;
Those retailers are selling the goods with the blessing of TLG;
TLG most probably added a preview for such sets long before, and officially made
images, set numbers and descriptions available for the broader consumer market
some time before the retailers had them for sale.

So should the policy not read as follows:
Items may not be listed for sale by BrickLink stores prior to the first date
that such items are being offered for sale on lego.com and/or certified LEGO
stores.

There should also be a definite catalogue policy as follows:
TLG might make set descriptions, set numbers, images, set contents and box
images available some time prior to offering such items for sale on lego.com
or at certified LEGO stores. Catalogue entries will not be accepted until the
first day such items actually become for sale to the general public on those
platforms.

And yes, I've had a few of these so-called pre-release items in my time and
I've had some of them approved for catalogue entries and inventory purposes
in the past by a simple request for approval. I was never aware of this rule
until 2018 when I had a request rejected after having a set in hand specifically
purchased to add the inventory of the set for the BL catalogue.

Not everything is sold through official LEGO outlets. There are many exclusive
items that do not have a public release date. We are working on aligning the
catalog with official release data, but we're not quite there yet.

However, that does not mean there is not an official release date for every LEGO
item. And we are not the only site that abides by these rules. All registered
fan media, including sites that get sets early to do reviews, are under strict
embargo agreements, and they may lose their registered status if they break an
agreement. So BrickLink, as the LEGO Group's own fan site, needs to set the
example with this. Don't compare us with Amazon, Walmart, or any other major
retailer. We have a leadership role to play within the context of the AFOL community.

There should also be a definite catalogue policy as follows:

Actually, it is stricter than that. If information about a set has not been released
by the LEGO Group for publication, such information may not be entered into a
publicly viewable pending entry until the information is officially released.
Such pending entries are subject to immediate removal.

I'm not comparing BrickLink to those retailers.
What I am trying to get across to BrickLink is that those retailers have released
the sets for sale to the general public with the official blessing of TLG, else
it would not be for sale at all. TLG is the largest toy maker in the world, they
can and do control the market for their own product. There is not a single retailer
in the world that can get inventory of a LEGO product from a wholesaler for resale
to the general public without TLG's blessing.

If the embargo BL is operating under precludes a listing in the BL catalogue
and a for sale listing by a seller registered on the BL platform (supposedly
independent of control by TLG) until such time as TLG approves of it, then the
rules should say so. The current policy merely states that LEGO must have released
the item. My point is they did, else it would not be for sale at all anywhere.

There should also be a definite catalogue policy as follows:
TLG might make set descriptions, set numbers, images, set contents and box

As I suggested - TLG makes it available...

I added this item a number of years ago.

Gear No: SWbag Name: Drawstring Brick Bag, Star Wars Minifigures Pattern

SWbag Drawstring Brick Bag, Star Wars Minifigures Pattern
Gear: Storage: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6

I don't believe it was ever sold by LEGO, so there was no first date it was
sold by LEGO. So when was the official release date? Was it the first time it
was sold by a store? If so, what would have happened if LEGO did start to sell
the item some time later? There would then be an official release date and BL
would have released it earlier than allowed.

In regards to sets, I believe release dates vary by region. At least they used
to, sometimes by months. So the idea of an official release date would thus
be tied to the earliest regional release.

In an official LEGO store, or in a supermarket or other retail outlet that sells
it before LEGO does?

It will be approved to the catalog on its official release date of August 1.

Well, well, looks like I was right and even LEGO themselves couldn't hold
off on selling them "early." "Official" once again means nothing...
https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/the-mandalorian-the-child-75317

Glad to see the listing is approved here now ahead of the "Official release"
(still 4 more days away, and despite the above statement to the contrary).

But seriously, this is a prime example that availability IS the release,
not some random date that may or may not be when they are "anticipated to
potentially, likely and possibly start shipping."

But I'm sure I'll never be told I was right about the Aug 1st release
date being hogwash, to hard to eat crow nowadays.

If an official LEGO retail outlet sells something in advance of the official
release date, we will consider that an exception and follow the official LEGO
channel.

This is what happened in this case. Once it was available on US Shop at Home,
we approved the entry in the catalog.
