Interesting, I thought these sorting trays are considered to be part of the box/packaging.
However, it looks like there is no clear definition of what belongs to the packaging
and what belongs to the set inventory. Even the new help page only says
"Original Boxes - Packaging that contained the items in a set."

Or am I missing something?

Here's the story on that. Long, long ago, Dan decided to link original box
entries and instructions entries to set entries. This meant that any item that
was packaging of any kind was technically covered by the entry tied to the set
entry and the same for instructions.
Later, beginning at least as early as 2003:
and continuing through the mid-2000s people started adding storage containers
and sorting trays to the catalog. Some of those, particularly in the case of
educational sets, were later added to set inventories.
Now we have a situation where some set inventories, particularly educational
sets, contain items that would properly be considered original boxes or original
instructions. Because sets boxes have variants (different box sizes, different
printing, etc.) and set instructions have variants (1 or 2 booklets, different
sizes, different languages, etc.) , the ideal solution would be to stop tying
boxes and instructions entries to sets.
However, that would require adding tens of thousands of new catalog entries for
original boxes and set instructions. It would also require rewriting the site
code and working with sellers to get items for sale moved to new catalog entries.
Or, put differently, it's way too much work to undo 20 years later.
So we have what we have. For storage items, sorting trays, and various things
that should be considered instructions, we have the option of leaving them out
of set inventories as orphaned catalog entries (no year of release and no idea
where they came from) or adding them to set inventories. Some have been added,
some haven't.
And now you know.

| I just try to go by what I think someone might want to buy. I discard the boxes
from my vintage sets, but I usually keep sorting trays like this. They are very
useful for my catalog work and my business. I have a steady influx of them,
so I needn't buy one, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone wanted it.
And I am not sure if you bought the box for 8440-1 that you could be sure you
would get this item with it.

I totally agree that there are people who are interested in vintage boxes or
parts of vintage boxes, but I would just list all parts of boxes under the box
entry (with an appropriate description of course). I am pretty sure that is the
place where buyers would search for them (at least I would do so). A separate
catalog entry for the sorting tray may cause sellers to separate it from the
box which isn't very useful because, if you ask me, the tray belongs to the
cardboard box and both should be kept together whenever possible.
@Robert: Thanks for the explanation. To have catalog entries for sorting trays
from Educational sets etc. makes somewhat sense since these kind of trays are
robust and really part of the sets (they are displayed in product photos for
example). Sorting trays for normal technic sets, however, are pretty thin and
I guess TLG has never considered them to be part of a set.

There is perhaps a middle road here. Most sets have a box that is consistent
and well covered by the system Dan set up. Dacta sets, at least since mid-90s
do not. There is no original box for these sets. The original box entry could
be taken away from just them.

I was too quick to approve it as I failed to realize it was not an Educational/Dacta
set. It has been removed from the inventory.
Cheers,
