Dear all - this topic has actually been troubling me since ever - but I never
went so far to post my insecurities around the LEGO Color ID mess I experience.
So please be friendly on me if I got something interlay wrong here.
I have charts with the official LEGO color id on, I see charts online that are
from LEGO with numbers on tiles and then we have the color guide here on BL.
Can somebody help me and explain to me why those numbers don't match ?
Why is the color ID in BL colorguide not the same as the color ID on the LEGO
chart and then sometimes it is??

Example of not the same:
light blueish gray - BL color 86 - LG color 194 ??

example of the same:
white - BL color 1 - LG color 001 ??

best regards
Casper

Because BrickLink made their color guide and expanded it over a period of two
decades independently of the LEGO Group's color names and numbering system.

The color IDs from LEGO were not always known. So when fans started tracking
LEGO parts and inventories in the younger days of the Internet, they had to create
their own color IDs to use with their systems. Thus, the color IDs in the BrickLink
database were most likely assigned in sequential order as colors were added to
the BrickLink database. LDraw uses another system, etc. Now that the LEGO color
IDs *are* known, the color IDs between all of the systems could be harmonized,
but there is a lot of history on BrickLink that will probably not be thrown away.
I strongly expect that the color IDs here are part of the site history that will
remain.

For ease of moving between the various systems out their for LEGO colors, you
probably could not do much better than the following site:

Thanks ! I actually didn't know of that link - and I totally understand the
sequence of event around fans and LG not communicating color numbers and stuff.
I would hope for a kind of combining of these within Bricklink - like with the
part numbers. I prefer using trickling as reference and catalogue for looking
things up - but usually I have to juggle brickiest, Perron, BL and whatever other
site that has a part of the puzzle.

My current hazel is due to me making a more solid labeling system for my drawers
and crates, while my kids are learning to navigate the color numbers - but they
need to know what numbers to follow when looking on a label and then find the
needed part on BrickLink .. long story - totally first world problem - and I
think I will end up doing my own physical converter overview/board for them to
refer to when in need.

thanks again a lot for your help
