|
We can get started on this now. I can add the word "Sheet" to titles administratively,
but there is no easy way to accomplish moving PCCs administratively. Assistance
with catalog change requests would be appreciated.
Please see the attached images. The first image shows how to move the PCC when
there is only one number in the title. If anyone disagrees with treating this
number as a PCC, then say something. The second image shows how to move the
PCC when there are two numbers in the title separated by a slash. The lengthier
number should be the PCC (ask if unsure in a specific instance).
For sticker sheets from roughly 1997-2014 PCCs were already moved, but they were
(most unfortunately) left in the titles. They still need to be removed from
titles. If the PCC has already been moved, you'll get the message shown
in the third image. In those cases, just remove the PCC from the title.
If you're not sure how this should be done properly, please ask for clarification
before proceeding to assist with these changes. The parts shown in the images

| Here's my plan to handle the restructuring, which is a combination of ideas
from everyone:
For Existing Duplicate Catalog Entries:
1. Stickers that appear in multiple sets will have a new catalog entry
created. Then all existing duplicate entries will be merged into the new entry.
2. Item numbers for the new catalog entries will be formatted like this:
multistk001, multistk002, multistk003, etc.
3. Item titles for new entries will be formatted as follows. When the
sticker appears in three or fewer sets, then "Sticker Sheet for Multiple Sets
- 1001, 1002, 1003." When the sheet appears in more than three sets (there are
only 19 of these): "Sticker Sheet for Multiple Sets, Town, Fish and Coral."
4. N/A and International sticker sheet entries will be merged when there
are no apparent differences beyond the standard N/A / International differences.
5. Where significant differences exist between sticker sheets, such as
color differences in the stickers themselves, the duplicate entries will be retained.
For All Sticker Sheet Entries:
1. PCCs for all sticker sheets will be moved from the item title to the
PCC field. Item numbers will be retained in their current place in the titles.
2. Item titles for all sticker sheets will be changed from the format
"Sticker for Set" to "Sticker Sheet for Set."
If anyone has suggestions for this plan or sees where it may encounter problems,
please say something. Otherwise, we'll move into the action phase during
the upcoming week.

|
| Below are the issues additionally identified in this thread:
1. The word "Sheet" should be added to catalog entries.
I agree and we will make this part of the project. So all items will go from
"Sticker for Set" to "Sticker Sheet for Set."
2. Incomplete sticker sheets should not be allowed to be listed.
CAs cannot control this, nor can we force sellers to state if the sticker sheet
is complete or incomplete.
3. We should use the item number for sticker sheets instead of placing the
item number in the title.
Not a bad idea, but we're trying to accomplish this with as little disruption
as possible. This idea would require renumbering every single sticker sheet,
which is not feasible. Also, many early sticker sheets did not have an item
number, so this would be an inconsistent approach.
4. Sticker sheets should not be considered a part, but should instead be
tied to set entries like original boxes and set instructions are.
This idea would create problems because some sticker sheets appear in multiple
sets. Also, tying instructions and original boxes to set entries creates its
own problems. Also, this would require coding from the site and we know we won't
get that.
5. Background color should be required for sticker sheets.
For this, I don't think so. I get that it would be convenient for some users,
but our image scans of sticker sheets are continually improving. A proper scan
will show the background color and this is probably the best way to handle this
issue.
6. Sticker sheets should be titled with descriptions of most or all of the
stickers that appear thereon.
I agree that this would make searching easier, but it would also be fairly difficult
to accomplish properly with the system we now have. This isn't a bad idea,
but it would be more appropriate for some kind of tag system if we ever get it.

These are the same sticker sheets, but have different item numbers, differently-sized
paper backing, and in some cases a slightly different finish (matte vs. glossy).
I don't want to get too distracted with this particular side discussion,
but do we need to maintain separate catalog entries for these sheets? Do you

The primary purpose for including stud-size dimensions is so that builders will
know the size of a part that they may not own and how that part would fit (or
if it would fit at all) into a MOC.
So stud-size dimensions have a legitimate purpose. If I'm building something,
I don't want to pull out a tape measure and start counting millimeters to
decide if a part I like (but don't own) will fit where I need it to fit.

There shouldn't be any parts in the catalog with millimeters or centimeters

I figured so. I tried an assortment of item numbers using the numbers you gave,
but to no avail.
So that part is one of the parts that exists in a non-standard size, meaning
a size that is not easily measured in stud dimensions. Another way to look at
it, as has been done in the past, is that it makes little sense to have stud-size
dimensions for parts like this.
For some of these parts dimensions were added in the past. Sometimes the dimensions
were added for the base only (as in this case) and at other times dimensions
were added based on the base + attachment (as you suggest should be done here).
For tens of thousands of other similar parts, stud-size dimensions simply weren't
allowed. In fact, 28,000+ parts in the catalog lack dimensions for this reason.
This is a known issue that needs to be addressed and is item seven on the roadmap:

Good idea and I added it to the roadmap (currently project 36):
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476
However, there are some things to consider here. First is that the a/b/c letters
are generally intended to indicate the chronological appearance of part variants.
Some have been intentionally switched in the past solely for the purpose of
indicating chronological order.
That order may or may not correspond with the axle hole appearance order, so
the renumbering will present issues. But the renaming should present no difficulties.
An additional issue with renumbering is the discord it causes for other websites.
Like it or not, at this point in time BrickLink generally sets the standard
that other sites follow and renumbering items must take this into consideration.
I personally would very much like to get rid of the mess of old item numbers
brought over from Peeron and who knows where else:
[P=3068bpx8]
[P=3068bps1]
As for single catalog entries consisting of two different axles types in some
cases, this is because those entries haven't yet been split.
But your post raises the larger issue of part variants in general. As time passes
this page makes the scale of the problem ever clearer (and I've still got
a bunch of updates to make):
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2488
I've been thinking about part variants and I'm beginning to be of the
opinion that variants should only be considered for separate catalog entries
when absolutely necessary. There are no guidelines at the moment for part variant
splits, but we need them and we need to rethink part variants and how they're
handled in general.
Like, a radical rethink. We can never hope to do justice to part variants in
such a hidebound system as BrickLink is compelled to be by the weight of its
own impact on adult LEGO usage, nor can we ever hope for accuracy for older sets.
And trying results in unnecessary hassle and expense for everyone involved.

I agree with this also, but setting up a notification system is well beyond the

have time to individually notify 700,000+ people of changes because to do so
I would have to send exactly that many PMs. There is no system in place for
mass-notification, even though members have asked for it for a long time.

I have noticed this before and definitely agree it needs to be worked on. The
problem is (and I'm starting to understand the rearranging the chairs thing)
there are too many problems.
In the case of this problem, you can't even find the problem because you
can't search for it. So it would involve examining every single catalog
entry. All 100K+ of them.
And perhaps, when the next problem comes along, examining all of them again.
It almost makes a person think that there must be a better way . . .

|
| We are finally making serious headway with the catalog backlog. The catalog
change requests queue is cleared out.
In the spirit of trying to ensure that the Catalog Roadmap is not just something
to look at, I am continuing with the goal of moving through one project each
month. We have essentially had a January project (flesh to nougat) and there
is a new project starting today for February:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476
What is this project?
This project involves accurately describing the differences between early (old)
versions of an item and later (new) versions. We need this for two reasons:
1. Using the words "old" and "new" were easy ways to avoid having to describe
actual differences between items. Set numbers in minifigure titles performed
the same function, which is why they were removed.
2. When a third version of an item appears, the old/new descriptors are useless.
Similar items should be described by their differences (usually the way in which
the later version is different from the earlier version).
There are around 500-1000 items expected to be affected by this project.
How can members contribute?
For the immediate moment, members may contribute by submitting title change requests.
I'm not sure how we're going to do item numbers yet, so hold off on
those. If you're not confident that you know exactly what this project entails
or need clarification on a specific issue, then please ask before submitting
a request.
For the immediate moment, ignore the additional topic bundled with this project
(looking at the use of with/without in titles). We may be able to include that,
or it may need to be made its own project. This project should also look at
the use of early/later descriptors since they serve the same function as the
terms old/new.
The goal is to wrap this up by the end of February. Of course, we also have
catalog work still to do and that takes precedence over projects - so this may
run over schedule.

You have exposed an ongoing problem with using a title-based system: widespread
inconsistencies in the use of search terms. Skin is the catalog standard term
for this type of pattern:
Here is the problem restated. What is essentially the same thing (a telephone)
is described in the catalog as:
[P=3069bpb545]
[P=3069bpb698]
You might use one of the search terms (phone, telephone, smartphone) and think
you've found all the items. Wrong. That is why title standardization is
incredibly important for a title-based system like BrickLink has now.
I'm working on improving search terms used in titles as we speak.

Dark nougat is a new and rare color, so items listed as such should be carefully
verified. That is the seller's responsibility to the buyer.
| If a buyer orders an item incorrectly listed as Earth Orange, it is site policy

An administrator gave commonsense advice for handling the integration of the
new color. That does not rise to the level of site policy.
| that it is common sense that it might be the wrong colour

It has been the wrong color since whenever these colors were added until now.
The site has made progress and you complain? How would you recommend handling
the situation? Removing all items for sale in earth orange and insisting that
every seller examine the colors before relisting them for sale?
| but since the seller listed it incorrectly, there is no assistance from site management in the event of a claim.
|
Again, true dark nougat parts have always been listed incorrectly. You are making
something out of nothing merely for the sake of having something to be unhappy
about.

Those parts are already in the inventory. They are included in the sub-inventory

And yet in another message you don't seem to be fond of the idea of losing

But I'll try to make this post the last thing I say about it. In a recent
response to a different post:

Russell said:
"Many historic accounts, such as major contributors or Dan's own personal
account were intentionally untouched by the process."
So this means that someone at BrickLink made a determination based on subjective
criteria about who would be erased and who wouldn't.
All I'm saying is that an objective standard should have been (and still
could be) used: if a member ever contributed to the catalog/inventories, then
they should not be turned into a number.
Erasing contributor usernames is a breach of the promises made here (and in other
places):
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2472
And beyond that, it is simply disrespectful.

I agree. But I will qualify that by saying that once you make some contribution
to the world, you may have to trade a little privacy for that. And BrickLink
has made no secret of the fact that contributions are credited to users. Everyone
should know the deal going in when they choose to contribute.
There is such a thing as later changing your mind and asking to be removed from
public/private records, but I don't believe that these contributors did so.

new privacy laws.

Maybe. This is the general consensus. I think it was more of a case of a poorly-researched
law and an over-reaction.

Yes, but companies and individuals have the ability to challenge unjust laws.
Some have.

Correction: perhaps the trend is not so recent. There was another time and place
in history when people were reduced to numbers by those in power.
Should I bring that up? No.
Is it in any way comparable to what BrickLink has done? No, there is no comparison.
I only mention it to illustrate the thought process that goes into disrespecting
people enough to reduce them to anonymous numbers.
