Replace "decorated" categories with 2 new categories, "printed" and "with stickers".

This idea was tossed around between administrators (including Dan) in 2007/2008.
It was deemed at the time to be an interesting idea with some positives, but
ultimately not preferable.

Thirteen years later, I can't tell that anything's changed.

You may submit any genuine LEGO item to the catalog.

And where: book / gear / catalog

At this point in time most paper objects should be added as the Books item type.
If the flyers have the characteristics of a catalog, then that's where they'd
go. Otherwise books.

Yes, there is a reason.

The reason is that BrickLink is leery of changing item numbers. There are hundreds
of item numbers that need to be changed and someday I may make a list of them.

  For All Sticker Sheet Entries:

1. PCCs for all sticker sheets will be moved from the item title to the
PCC field. Item numbers will be retained in their current place in the titles.

2. Item titles for all sticker sheets will be changed from the format
"Sticker for Set" to "Sticker Sheet for Set."

We can get started on this now. I can add the word "Sheet" to titles administratively,
but there is no easy way to accomplish moving PCCs administratively. Assistance
with catalog change requests would be appreciated.

Please see the attached images. The first image shows how to move the PCC when
there is only one number in the title. If anyone disagrees with treating this
number as a PCC, then say something. The second image shows how to move the
PCC when there are two numbers in the title separated by a slash. The lengthier
number should be the PCC (ask if unsure in a specific instance).

For sticker sheets from roughly 1997-2014 PCCs were already moved, but they were
(most unfortunately) left in the titles. They still need to be removed from
titles. If the PCC has already been moved, you'll get the message shown
in the third image. In those cases, just remove the PCC from the title.

If you're not sure how this should be done properly, please ask for clarification
before proceeding to assist with these changes. The parts shown in the images
are linked for reference:

Here's my plan to handle the restructuring, which is a combination of ideas
from everyone:

For Existing Duplicate Catalog Entries:

1. Stickers that appear in multiple sets will have a new catalog entry
created. Then all existing duplicate entries will be merged into the new entry.

2. Item numbers for the new catalog entries will be formatted like this:
multistk001, multistk002, multistk003, etc.

3. Item titles for new entries will be formatted as follows. When the
sticker appears in three or fewer sets, then "Sticker Sheet for Multiple Sets
- 1001, 1002, 1003." When the sheet appears in more than three sets (there are
only 19 of these): "Sticker Sheet for Multiple Sets, Town, Fish and Coral."

4. N/A and International sticker sheet entries will be merged when there
are no apparent differences beyond the standard N/A / International differences.

5. Where significant differences exist between sticker sheets, such as
color differences in the stickers themselves, the duplicate entries will be retained.

If anyone has suggestions for this plan or sees where it may encounter problems,
please say something. Otherwise, we'll move into the action phase during
the upcoming week.

Below are the issues additionally identified in this thread:

1. The word "Sheet" should be added to catalog entries.

I agree and we will make this part of the project. So all items will go from
"Sticker for Set" to "Sticker Sheet for Set."

2. Incomplete sticker sheets should not be allowed to be listed.

CAs cannot control this, nor can we force sellers to state if the sticker sheet
is complete or incomplete.

3. We should use the item number for sticker sheets instead of placing the
item number in the title.

Not a bad idea, but we're trying to accomplish this with as little disruption
as possible. This idea would require renumbering every single sticker sheet,
which is not feasible. Also, many early sticker sheets did not have an item
number, so this would be an inconsistent approach.

4. Sticker sheets should not be considered a part, but should instead be
tied to set entries like original boxes and set instructions are.

This idea would create problems because some sticker sheets appear in multiple
sets. Also, tying instructions and original boxes to set entries creates its
own problems. Also, this would require coding from the site and we know we won't
get that.

5. Background color should be required for sticker sheets.

For this, I don't think so. I get that it would be convenient for some users,
but our image scans of sticker sheets are continually improving. A proper scan
will show the background color and this is probably the best way to handle this
issue.

6. Sticker sheets should be titled with descriptions of most or all of the
stickers that appear thereon.

I agree that this would make searching easier, but it would also be fairly difficult
to accomplish properly with the system we now have. This isn't a bad idea,
but it would be more appropriate for some kind of tag system if we ever get it.

This is sort of akin to Number Six on your roadmap. I think.

It is, but definitely a good additional point to consider. I added the following
sentence to that project:

"Per mfav this project should also include an examination of how part dimensions
are titled, especially parts that have dimensions that exceed an attachment plate
(airplane tails, for example)."

And let me just say that it's not my roadmap. I made it for all of us to
share. It's our roadmap, our ongoing discussion about how to best
organize this catalog we share.

The likelihood of adding anything to the catalog that is not an official LEGO

disaster to be repeated.

So this is basically a blocked open stud. We have two options:

1. Catalog them under the existing blocked open stud entry and add the new number
as an additional item number.

2. Create a new 3626d entry.

I don't have any preference here. What do others think?

There are problems with these:

[P=41168c01]
[P=41168c02]
[P=41168c03]
[P=41168cx2]

Additionally, there are others not in the catalog. There are various problems
with images, part numbers, colors, inventories, titles, etc., etc.

Bored? Dive in and clean it up! Figure out what needs to be done and start
submitting the necessary requests/additions.

I don't have time + interest at this particular moment, but it needs to be
done.

I'm still interested in hearing additional ideas on the best way to handle
this restructuring. As I said, I do have some ideas, but I'd rather hear
what others think first so that I'm not influencing opinions.

This is the question from my original post:

Sticker sheets are handled quite consistently at the present moment. How can we retain that consistency while eliminating duplicate entries with the least amount of disruption?

I'll likely post back here within the next week with what I see as some of
our options so that we may discuss them.

I did not design this website or the way it's intended to function.

Nor do I have any significant input on the way it will operate in the future,
at least from a design standpoint.

But we can talk about all this in further detail if/when the dimensions project
occurs.

At long last, it is time. By the end of March, my goal is to eliminate duplicate
catalog entries for sticker sheets:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogRelList.asp?relID=15

You can see that this has been moved from Section 11.1 to 11.2 on the roadmap:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

I have some ideas, but I'd like to hear yours - especially those of you who've
given this some thought over the past decade or so that some of us have wanted
it.

Sticker sheets are handled quite consistently at the present moment. How can
we retain that consistency while eliminating duplicate entries with the least
amount of disruption?

As a side note, how do you feel about the NA/International duplicate entries?
These are the same sticker sheets, but have different item numbers, differently-sized
paper backing, and in some cases a slightly different finish (matte vs. glossy).
I don't want to get too distracted with this particular side discussion,
but do we need to maintain separate catalog entries for these sheets? Do you
want us to?

Looking forward to hearing some discussion and seeing some ideas other than my
own to get these duplicate entries handled.

And it's simpler to measure parts in [mm] than converting in studs and having
some funny dimension

The primary purpose for including stud-size dimensions is so that builders will
know the size of a part that they may not own and how that part would fit (or
if it would fit at all) into a MOC.

So stud-size dimensions have a legitimate purpose. If I'm building something,
I don't want to pull out a tape measure and start counting millimeters to
decide if a part I like (but don't own) will fit where I need it to fit.

It makes no sense to have stud size dimensions for anything in the dimensions
field. Having some dimensions being mm and others being studs makes all of them
useless.

There shouldn't be any parts in the catalog with millimeters or centimeters
in the dimensions field (only everything else but parts). If you know of any
items in the Parts item type that use something other than stud-size dimensions,
then these need to be corrected.

If there are stud size dimensions, relegate them to the description field until
such time as there is a database rethink.

This honestly is a good idea. But it would require individually changing the
dimensions for 30,501 parts.

  Also, why are some things 1 x 2 and other things 2 x 1? That's confusing
as all get out.

It's confusing to many people. This is what the catalog has been operating
off of, pretty much unchanged, for two decades:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=261

Even in my new catalog help pages, I struggled with the topic. The new page
is frankly not much better:

  Sorry, dyslexia kicking in

I figured so. I tried an assortment of item numbers using the numbers you gave,
but to no avail.

Part No: 15070 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Tooth Vertical
*
15070 Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Tooth Vertical
Parts: Plate, Modified

So that part is one of the parts that exists in a non-standard size, meaning
a size that is not easily measured in stud dimensions. Another way to look at
it, as has been done in the past, is that it makes little sense to have stud-size
dimensions for parts like this.

For some of these parts dimensions were added in the past. Sometimes the dimensions
were added for the base only (as in this case) and at other times dimensions
were added based on the base + attachment (as you suggest should be done here).

For tens of thousands of other similar parts, stud-size dimensions simply weren't
allowed. In fact, 28,000+ parts in the catalog lack dimensions for this reason.

This is a known issue that needs to be addressed and is item seven on the roadmap:

Is this just another one of those places of inconsistency madness?

I cannot locate 10507 in the catalog. Please post a link.

I know, there'll be pain with the renaming and whatnot, but it would be nice
if all the axle holes on all the pieces were named consistently and were referred
to in a consistent manner in the item number.

Good idea and I added it to the roadmap (currently project 36):

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

However, there are some things to consider here. First is that the a/b/c letters
are generally intended to indicate the chronological appearance of part variants.
Some have been intentionally switched in the past solely for the purpose of
indicating chronological order.

That order may or may not correspond with the axle hole appearance order, so
the renumbering will present issues. But the renaming should present no difficulties.

An additional issue with renumbering is the discord it causes for other websites.
Like it or not, at this point in time BrickLink generally sets the standard
that other sites follow and renumbering items must take this into consideration.
I personally would very much like to get rid of the mess of old item numbers
brought over from Peeron and who knows where else:

Part No: 3068px9 Name: Tile 2 x 2 with Map Blue Water, Yellow Land, Black Letter X Pattern
*
3068px9 Tile 2 x 2 with Map Blue Water, Yellow Land, Black Letter X Pattern
Parts: Tile, Decorated

Part No: 3068p68 Name: Tile 2 x 2 with M:Tron Logo Pattern
*
3068p68 Tile 2 x 2 with M:Tron Logo Pattern
Parts: Tile, Decorated
[P=3068bpx8]
[P=3068bps1]

As for single catalog entries consisting of two different axles types in some
cases, this is because those entries haven't yet been split.

But your post raises the larger issue of part variants in general. As time passes
this page makes the scale of the problem ever clearer (and I've still got
a bunch of updates to make):

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2488

I've been thinking about part variants and I'm beginning to be of the
opinion that variants should only be considered for separate catalog entries
when absolutely necessary. There are no guidelines at the moment for part variant
splits, but we need them and we need to rethink part variants and how they're
handled in general.

Like, a radical rethink. We can never hope to do justice to part variants in
such a hidebound system as BrickLink is compelled to be by the weight of its
own impact on adult LEGO usage, nor can we ever hope for accuracy for older sets.
And trying results in unnecessary hassle and expense for everyone involved.

Change the item type to see the different allowable sizes.

Please submit a picture without the black axle attached to the brain stalk.
I feel it would be confusing in this instance to have additional parts included
in the assembly in the picture - so just the head connector block and the brain
stalk.

Sure, that would be great. When you upload the picture, please select the color
of the head (black, in the case) and not the color of the brain stalk. The color

For these parts, what is the color of the head connecter block for each image
you added? They're all grays, but still need to be identified before they
can be approved.

There are currently 240 items for sale for cty1055 and I would imagine that many
of them include a different head. The other routes here are to mark cty1055
for deletion or contact the 63 sellers and ask them to check their figures.

Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 60227 Name: Lunar Space Station
*
60227-1 (Inv) Lunar Space Station
385 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 2019
Sets: Town: City: Space Exploration

* Add 1 Minifig cty1055a Astronaut - Male, White Spacesuit with Orange Lines, Smirk, Cheek Lines, Black Eyebrows (Alternate) (match ID 1)
* Change 1 Minifig cty1055 Astronaut - Male, White Spacesuit with Orange Lines, Smirk, Cheek Lines, Black and Dark Tan Eyebrows {match ID 0 to 1}

Comments from Submitter:
I purchased this set brand new. When checking through the set contents I found the discrepancy noted in the change request. At least one other member has also reported the same alternate figure. The black/tan eyebrows is the less-common head included in early productions runs of the set, so that might be work considering for inventory purposes.

Would seem appropriate to contact the member directly, or set up a notice when status on the request is changed, especially after a month of no action on it and the request that
additional action by that member is to be taken.

This is a fair point and I will take it into consideration in the future. I
apologize that I didn't directly contact you.

But of course that is just one of the many notices that members really would
benefit from but never get

I agree with this also, but setting up a notification system is well beyond the
purview of CAs/IAs and requires action from the site's side. I simply don't
have time to individually notify 700,000+ people of changes because to do so
I would have to send exactly that many PMs. There is no system in place for
mass-notification, even though members have asked for it for a long time.

Please appropriately respect and value the user.

I have always tried to do that and I appreciate knowing where I fail.

The only other affected inventory should be 45517-2. For that one, I'd suggest either changing to the new part entry or adding the new entry as an alternate.

Okay, so we won't be changing item numbers at the moment. I have added that
portion of the project to the Catalog Roadmap (currently item 30):

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

We also will not address Type 1/Type 2 items with this project. That has been
added as a separate project.

I have noticed this before and definitely agree it needs to be worked on. The
problem is (and I'm starting to understand the rearranging the chairs thing)
there are too many problems.

In the case of this problem, you can't even find the problem because you
can't search for it. So it would involve examining every single catalog
entry. All 100K+ of them.

And perhaps, when the next problem comes along, examining all of them again.
It almost makes a person think that there must be a better way . . .

But I also know from experience that bundling too many things in together is
not conducive to finishing things. So I may make this a separate project. One
way or the other, it is needed.

We are finally making serious headway with the catalog backlog. The catalog
change requests queue is cleared out.

In the spirit of trying to ensure that the Catalog Roadmap is not just something
to look at, I am continuing with the goal of moving through one project each
month. We have essentially had a January project (flesh to nougat) and there
is a new project starting today for February:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

What is this project?

This project involves accurately describing the differences between early (old)
versions of an item and later (new) versions. We need this for two reasons:

1. Using the words "old" and "new" were easy ways to avoid having to describe
actual differences between items. Set numbers in minifigure titles performed
the same function, which is why they were removed.

2. When a third version of an item appears, the old/new descriptors are useless.
Similar items should be described by their differences (usually the way in which
the later version is different from the earlier version).

There are around 500-1000 items expected to be affected by this project.

How can members contribute?

For the immediate moment, members may contribute by submitting title change requests.
I'm not sure how we're going to do item numbers yet, so hold off on
those. If you're not confident that you know exactly what this project entails
or need clarification on a specific issue, then please ask before submitting
a request.

For the immediate moment, ignore the additional topic bundled with this project
(looking at the use of with/without in titles). We may be able to include that,
or it may need to be made its own project. This project should also look at
the use of early/later descriptors since they serve the same function as the
terms old/new.

The goal is to wrap this up by the end of February. Of course, we also have
catalog work still to do and that takes precedence over projects - so this may
run over schedule.

The same applies to set 8843, too - I have the supplemental sheet (which I'll
add in the next few days when I get it scanned) and the updated version of the
instructions.

BrickLink does not have any record in the inventory of this set of a redesign.
However, I have added a note to the instructions anyway:

Set No: 8843 Name: Fork-Lift Truck
*
8843-1 (Inv) Fork-Lift Truck
270 Parts, 1984
Sets: Technic: Model: Construction

You might see about updating the set inventory when you get a minute.

The old dragster set has a white correction sheet for step 16. It has a part
number on the page that doesn't show up in searches (120356).

Am I missing the entry somewhere? If not, should an entry exist? Or a note with
the instructions entry? (I could have sworn I had seen a note about this previously...)

Thanks!!

The inventory does show that the set was redesigned during production. Please
upload a scan of the correction sheet to the instruction entry for the set and
we'll add it as an alternate image.

I believe I've explained that. You can't add the part without a sticker
in the way you requested. However, the correct part that you submitted has been
approved to the catalog:

Part No: 90498pb15 Name: Tile 8 x 16 with Bottom Tubes, Textured Surface with TIE/Ln Starfighter Pattern (Sticker) - Set 75095
*
90498pb15 Tile 8 x 16 with Bottom Tubes, Textured Surface with TIE/Ln Starfighter Pattern (Sticker) - Set 75095
Parts: Tile, Decorated

That one may be added to the set inventory.

There's a huge catalog backlog and I know you're needing to get the inventories

an inventory, let me know.

I'm going to start looking for those items now.

As far as I'm aware, yes. It is a bit annoying, but true.

Once the initial image is approved or discarded, then another image can be added.
However, I believe it is possible for multiple users to add multiple photos
for the same pending item.

3626cpb1788 Minifigure, Head Dual Sided Alien Black Moustache, Skeleton with Lavender Eye Showing through Torn Skin Left, Angry / Scared Pattern - Hollow Stud
Parts: Minifigure, Head

You have exposed an ongoing problem with using a title-based system: widespread
inconsistencies in the use of search terms. Skin is the catalog standard term
for this type of pattern:

Part No: 3245cpb089 Name: Brick 1 x 2 x 2 with Inside Stud Holder with Rip Exposing Abilisk Skin Pattern Facing Down (Sticker) - Set 76081
*
3245cpb089 Brick 1 x 2 x 2 with Inside Stud Holder with Rip Exposing Abilisk Skin Pattern Facing Down (Sticker) - Set 76081
Parts: Brick, Decorated

Here is the problem restated. What is essentially the same thing (a telephone)
is described in the catalog as:

[P=3069bpb545]
[P=3069bpb698]

Part No: 16206pb01 Name: Duplo Utensil Telephone, Mobile with Keypad and Speech Bubbles Pattern
*
16206pb01 Duplo Utensil Telephone, Mobile with Keypad and Speech Bubbles Pattern
Parts: DUPLO, Figure Wear & Utensil

You might use one of the search terms (phone, telephone, smartphone) and think
you've found all the items. Wrong. That is why title standardization is
incredibly important for a title-based system like BrickLink has now.

I'm working on improving search terms used in titles as we speak.

I had planned to change it back after that time had passed anyway.

If a buyer orders an item incorrectly listed as Dark Nougat, then the seller
has no leg to stand on

Dark nougat is a new and rare color, so items listed as such should be carefully
verified. That is the seller's responsibility to the buyer.

If a buyer orders an item incorrectly listed as Earth Orange, it is site policy

An administrator gave commonsense advice for handling the integration of the
new color. That does not rise to the level of site policy.

that it is common sense that it might be the wrong colour

It has been the wrong color since whenever these colors were added until now.
The site has made progress and you complain? How would you recommend handling
the situation? Removing all items for sale in earth orange and insisting that
every seller examine the colors before relisting them for sale?

but since the seller listed it incorrectly, there is no assistance from site management in the event of a claim.

Again, true dark nougat parts have always been listed incorrectly. You are making
something out of nothing merely for the sake of having something to be unhappy
about.

I understand wanting to confirm from a set and it's always good to do. But
I will say that WoutR is one of a handful of BrickLink members who have demonstrated
a comprehensive understanding of LEGO colors. No one is perfect; but if WoutR

And yet in another message you don't seem to be fond of the idea of losing
BrickLink's ability to make independent decisions:

As for what they would say, the new color names are mostly TLG's own. What

As for

Do you genuinely believe that TLG is incapable of making mistakes? Are we to

Look, I understand disagreeing with decisions. And clearly you disagree with

Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 75095 Name: TIE Fighter - UCS
*
75095-1 (Inv) TIE Fighter - UCS
1681 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 2015
Sets: Star Wars: Ultimate Collector Series: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6

* Add 1 Part 90498 Black Tile 8 x 16 with Bottom Tubes (Counterpart)

Comments from Submitter:
It should exist a counterpart of this part, with the UCS TIE/Ln Starfighter description sticker on.

First submit the new part to the catalog here:

https://www.bricklink.com/wantedCatalog.asp

Then add a picture here:

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogImageAdd.page

Once the part is approved (added to the catalog) you can submit an inventory
change request to add the new part to the inventory.

I can't help myself from returning to this topic.

But I'll try to make this post the last thing I say about it. In a recent
response to a different post:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1176109

Russell said:

"Many historic accounts, such as major contributors or Dan's own personal
account were intentionally untouched by the process."

So this means that someone at BrickLink made a determination based on subjective
criteria about who would be erased and who wouldn't.

All I'm saying is that an objective standard should have been (and still
could be) used: if a member ever contributed to the catalog/inventories, then
they should not be turned into a number.

Erasing contributor usernames is a breach of the promises made here (and in other
places):

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2472

And beyond that, it is simply disrespectful.

Forgot to mention: I would like to be identified only by a completely random
number in future comic strips and not by a cleverly brick-built LEGO tornado.

You know, sometimes you seem to misinterpret the stuff I put in the comics as
a personal point of view. That is not the case.

Perhaps. And I shouldn't. I apologize.

If you want my personal point of view, it is that it is the individual in question
who should decide whether or not their feces is public. Not you. Not I.

I agree. But I will qualify that by saying that once you make some contribution
to the world, you may have to trade a little privacy for that. And BrickLink
has made no secret of the fact that contributions are credited to users. Everyone
should know the deal going in when they choose to contribute.

There is such a thing as later changing your mind and asking to be removed from
public/private records, but I don't believe that these contributors did so.

Bricklink in this instance is presumably attempting to meet compliance with these
new privacy laws.

Maybe. This is the general consensus. I think it was more of a case of a poorly-researched
law and an over-reaction.

The law is the law and the affected bodies must be in compliance or in violation.

Yes, but companies and individuals have the ability to challenge unjust laws.
Some have.

Now go ahead and point out where I'm wrong, and I'll make another comic
strip

It is good to have a plan and it seems like we have one.

So: there is a somewhat recent trend in society of erasing people from history.
A number of different reasons are used to justify this. In this instance, privacy
appears to have been the reason.

Correction: perhaps the trend is not so recent. There was another time and place
in history when people were reduced to numbers by those in power.

Should I bring that up? No.

Is it in any way comparable to what BrickLink has done? No, there is no comparison.

I only mention it to illustrate the thought process that goes into disrespecting
people enough to reduce them to anonymous numbers.

Correction: it is PII of an extremely limited sort, but not the kind intended
