1. Set was inventoried after 15 Oct 2011, so 3794b variant was available in catalog; therefore, I assume the person that inventoried would have differentiated between the 2 part variants.
2. Set was inventoried before 3794a variant was available in catalogue, meaning that 3794 was the without groove variant at that time.
As a side question, have sets been spotted previously with a mix of variant types, such as 3794a and 3794b in the same sealed set? If not, it looks like the original inventory submission had a typo and the dark red 3794b schools be delayed and its alternate made regular.

I verified this from my set. I bought it used; however, it was from the original
owner and had never been broken down to mix up parts with other sets. All of
the other part types and variations corresponded to the current inventory, so
I felt confident that this was the original part.

Oops, my mistake. I verified this with my 7964 set which has been only adult
owned, built, and displayed, never played with and was always stored with parts
separate from any other sets.

Actually, I think what may have happened here is that the part without the groove
was originally inventoried in the set. Then someone found that some of the sets
included the part with a groove and added it as an alternate part.
Years later, someone decided to include the letter "a" at the end of the part
without a groove, so a new catalog entry was created for the part and the original
part without a groove was changed to be an undetermined entry. When that happened
it left the undetermined entry in the inventory where now the part without a
groove (3794a) should go.
It might be better here to replace the undetermined part for this set with the
3794a part. You can see the changes made in the past to this inventory by looking
toward the bottom of the inventory page and clicking the log of completed
changes button. Look for the changes made on Oct 29, 2012.
By the way, I never heard back from you about becoming an inventory verifier.
Is this still something you want to do?

that the alternate part should likely remain and the undetermined type be changed
to the 3794a party.
