Voted Yes. Having this comparison helps me to buy hundreds of pieces at a time
and easily know whether the store I've chosen is charging me double what
each piece is worth, without having to check each piece manually. The only ones
to blame for a downward spiral in pricing are sellers listing their parts cheaper
than everyone else. If a part can be sold cheaper, maybe it should be.

But tools like this enourage sellers to continue listing their parts cheaper
than everyone else. That's part of the problem. And I'm not sure what
you mean my that last sentence. Of course a part can be sold cheaper. It can
be given away for free. So it should be?

Providing sellers with this information easily when they list parts, but not
making it easily available to buyers when buying, puts sellers at an unnecessary
advantage in this marketplace. It erodes my confidence when purchasing, or requires
me to spend an inordinate amount of time researching to save what amounts to
pennies per piece. While some would say that I should just suck it up and pay
the pennies if I don't want to do the legwork, I'd say that'd make
sense if the sellers had to do the legwork of looking up each individual part
price and entering it manually, but they don't.

What do you mean? Sellers have EXACTLY the same access to average prices that
buyers do.

I think a nice compromise would be to show the over/under comparison against
current listing prices, instead of 6 month average.

I thought that's what it already was.

--
Marc.

thanks for your thoughtful reply.

of course i am not suggesting that parts be given away for free. i'm saying
maybe part prices are inflated if sellers are actually willing to sell for less.
as a seller, if i think a part is too cool to sell for a nickel, i keep it, cause
i know no one's gonna pay a quarter for it. or if i have a ten dollar minifig
and i dont want to sit on it for a year, i'll list it for 9 and try to move
it out. if bricklink has a problem with sellers undercutting each other, i don't
think limiting the buyers information is the smart way to fix it. why not limit
sellers ability to list a part for less than a certain price. 1x1 cheese slope
dark red - minimum price, $.02. or maybe let bricklink set the price. millennium
falcon radar dish: $10. seller paid more for it originally, tough crap, you can
only sell it here for $10. that's not fair to the seller though, is it?

regarding sellers and buyers having equal access, that's just not true. a
seller can part out a set and list the pieces automatically at the 6 month avg,
but a buyer cannot then shop for those same parts in that same sellers store
without seeing all at once whether they are above or below average price. that's
not equal access. that makes the buyer work much harder than the seller to determine
whether each individual part is listed at fair value or not.

and on your third point, yeah, that's what i thought it was too, but this
thread seems to be referring to 6mo avg, so i assumed i was misremembering.

Hello All, and to my recent seller please accept my appologies.

Got in some other sets today straight from lego.com and compared elements. Couldn't
distinguish any serious differences. I suppose there is a little variation among
genuine lego factory molds and plastic composition.

Thank you all for your help and concern. Got my first set in the 70's and
thought I was an expert. Guess not.

Thank you for reporting back.

Nowadays, especially in online discussions, I see far too few people willing
to admit a mistake. I really appreciate this.

  I've been had!!!

Suggestion: Counterfiet Seller's Registry

First time user of Bricklink. Was excited to buy "new sealed" discontinued star
wars set on behalf of my son at what I thought was a fair price.

Posted positive feedback immediately because item was sealed and appeared to
be in authentic packaging. All logos present with circled R and tm etc.
Upon inspection of parts even noticed "LEGO" on all studs. However edges were
sharper than genuine parts, also in general parts felt lighter, minor differences
in shapes of familiar elements. Amazed at the attention to detail of the fakers.
But, in my heart of hearts I know it's a fake set. Instructions and promotional
items all there etc. I don't think my son even knows or cares. I've also
compared the seals and box to "youtube speed build" of the same authentic set
and noted differences in seals and packaging(e.g. barcoded box seals).

Is there a way to report a seller if you believe they are selling fake sets?
I would like to report this person so that others don't fall victim as I
have. I would never want to pass this set or it's elements on as authentic.
I don't even care to fight for my money back, but I don't want this to
happen to others. It has eroded my trust in bricklink at this point.

Thanks for listenting to my rant,

Duped in NC

I agree with the other responses, I believe you have received a genuine set here
but if you are still concerned I would -

1. Contact the seller, share your concerns and ask where he obtained the set
from.

if you are still concerned -

2. Contact Lego Customer Services, I am sure they will be able to quickly determine
that the item is genuine or not by asking you a few detailed questions about
the product and/or packaging. To fake a set in the way you describe including
all TLG branding in the moulding would take a pretty large operation and investment
as injection moulding tooling is not cheap to put it mildly, I'm certain
they would know about it.

Would your printer be in “draft” mode?

That mode prints with less ink. It’s often an advantage when you’re also using
(cheap) paper that “drinks” ink for, well, drafts.

And that leads to: Have you tried changing your paper?

Probably BL is the last site to still calculate in EEK. When will that change?

Removing it would reduce the list to 40 currencies, 4 columns of 10, and USD
wouldn’t be all alone in its own column

Please use GMT - that is understood worldwide.

Not in the USA. To hard to convert so the standard here is Eastern Standard
Time. The USA has 6 time zones.

Then I suggest to have both.
It should not be hard to read the location of the computer, and therefore use
EST/EDT for the US, and GMT for Europe and,.... others where needed.

Taking
information away buyers to stabilize pricing is a poor solution.

I think a nice compromise would be to show the over/under comparison against
current listing prices, instead of 6 month average.

I approach this from a hobbyist perspective. While I have a store, it exists
to move items that I get in bulk lots that I do not want, which helps me offset
the cost of that bulk lot and keep the items that I do want. I'm not here
to make my mortgage, it's for fun.

You don't need to check all the pieces. Just the more expensive ones or the
ones with large numbers. If the store is appearing high up because they are cheap,
you ought to spend time on looking at their shipping fees, lot fees, other fees,
etc.

It probably works ok for US buyers, due to generally lower prices. But it doesn't
work so well if you restrict the search to smaller countries. For example, UK
prices can be 20% over average but still be cheaper than buying from a US seller.
Telling the buyer that all UK sellers are expensive compared to the world average
doesn't help. So any average price tool should recalculate averages based
on the filters selected.

This seems like a poor way to resolve the problem. Personally, I get my stock
from a number of sources, including the 2nd hand market (i.e. bricklink), if
the quality of this fake is as high as you indicate it is entirely possible the
seller was suckered him/herself without knowing it. A "registry" that would be
very detrimental to sellers seems completely out of line if you aren't even
willing to reach out to them that there was a problem. I know I would want someone
to reach out to me and give me a chance to resolve the issue.

If it was a defective/ fake item. Your feedback does not look like your un happy

say about this? His other feed back reviews look good.

Marshal

Thank you for your reply. Was not as careful with the inspection as I should
have been. I was eager to leave feedback due to quick shipping on seller's
part. Was greatful to let my son get started building. It wasn't until close
inspection of the elements after my son had taken a break from building that
I realized something wasn't right.

I have not contacted the seller.

I do not wish to contact the seller. The damage is done. I just want to help
others that care about genuine LEGO.

I would suggest more info on spotting fake sets so that others don't make
the same mistake that I made. Also, if possible, a way to show verification that
you have been sold a fake and a way to report it (that is fair to the seller
as well). Possible weight comparisons of individual elements. Posting pictures
of the absence of bar coded seals. Posting pictures of diferences in genuine
vs. fake elements.

Just some ideas that may help fight the fakes.

Thank you

(snapped)

It is a partly random number that influences the feeling of a buyer whether a
deal is good or not. I usually don't use this feature because I have other
priorities when buying.

Imagine you buy a pack of apples. Every month. They cost always 2$. One day they
offer leftovers or promotion-bags or whatever you can imagine better. The bag
costs now 0.10$. From now on you will always see a 2$ (1.68$ average price, +18.8%)
tag beside the apples.

What does this help you? What does it do to the market?
Please think about it. You might find some answers in yourself.

There are 3 Mr. Incredible for sale for less than a penny and one for $91.

And even with the way it is, any one that is shopping has the option of comparing
prices if they are so motivated, but as many people have said, it's only
the base price and doesn't contain necessary information like

Paypal fees
lot fees
shipping costs
likelihood of actually getting the order

All I want is an honest answer. The fact that this tool isn't valuable when
grocery shopping is irrelevant. I'm willing to entertain an alternative
basis of the average price if that is your concern. I'm just unsure of why
you don't want your price compared to another, immediately at the point of
purchase.

What's your honest answer?

Having such a tool encourages sellers to implement deceptive practices.

Imagine two stores: One has average prices, honest shipping costs, and no hidden
fees. The other has lower than average prices, but charges an extra $3 on shipping,
and adds 5% to the final total for Paypal fees.

The price comparison tool will lead buyers to the second store, even if their
order would cost more there
.

I agree that it's a good thing for buyers to be able to see where they can
get what they want at a good price. For that to happen transparently, the comparison
tools need to include total final cost, not just the listed cost of the parts.
That is not possible without automated checkout.

There have been several adequate responses, just not the one you wanted to hear.

You ignored my answer

The tool might have given you a false sense of security, but it was flawed in
may ways.

You also ignored:

(Many store cut item prices but have high fees (...) those fees are not reflected
in the price guide.)

and
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1031366
(Too many buyers and sellers are looking at averages blindly, not
taking into account other factors like some countries having purchase taxes and
others not (...) There aremany other factors such as add-on fees, different postal
costs in different markets, etc, etc. )

Just a few examples...

Because it only compared one element of the price. If it compared all elements
of the price it would be better but of course. Mostly people compare prices then
go to the store. The tool was misleading to the buyer and causing unsustainability
for the site as a whole IMO.

If you actually read at least 10 of the answers you got already instead of ignoring
the bits you didn't want to hear you'd find that would already have been
answered however, I think that is what he meant by cherry picking.

Also, as I said before the answer you are looking for would only come from the
site administration, not the membership (forum being a subset of).

The item you have is genuine , i collect clone brands from asia and i have never
come across a set that has the lego logo on the set, bricks or instructions .
There are plenty of companies that copy lego designs but they always have their
own brand on them .

I agree with everyone in this thread, I have never seen a fake with the LEGO
logo.
Please share photos of all the variations that you suspect are not genuine.

A few things come to mind here, first you should definitely contact the seller
and see what they say. Secondly I don't think it is counterfeit LEGO, as
mentioned already there are all sorts of rip-offs but to my knowledge no one
has gone to the extremes of logo on the parts, matching instructions and packaging
etc.

There are variances within genuine Lego sets produced in different production
runs, at different factories and at different times. LEGO do change packaging,
sometimes they are subtle changes for example I parted out two sets the other
day, one had push tab seals and one had plastic tape seals. Set 10242 came in
two different shaped boxes! Another set I parted out recently, although it's
an old one there were three different inventories between the five sets I had.

If you are convinced it is counterfeit try contacting someone in a local LUG
or someone from here that is local to look at the parts and packaging for personal
inspection and see what they think, otherwise high quality photos would be good
too.

I sometimes search for a set reference in my inventory, if I have no results
I switch to all items search, maybe a button can be added to the inventory search
that continues the search but in the all items section:

something like:
"Havent found what you are looking for? press here to rerun the search
in all items"

Example:
When uploading instructions I like to check in my inventory if I already have
the set for sale that do not have the instructions. if the search result does
not return any results I will want to upload it into my store but have to change
the group to All items, then run the search again. its a very small improvement,
but it will save me a step everytime I do this.

thanks for reading!

This would be a really good time for you to be aware that, in all of my years
of 'playing' with LEGO, I have NEVER found a counterfeit set, with the
LEGO logo present on the studs, or even down to the seals on the packaging.

Yes, there are cases of sets being re-produced by the other CLONE brands (LEPIN),
but even they don't have the LEGO logo on the studs...

Which is why I suspect that you have been mis-led about the YouTube videos of
the box seals etc, purely due to the fact that the LEGO group has so many factories
around the world, all contributing to the production of the LEGO that we all
love.

Yes, there are cases of the slight differences between bricks/parts, which are
either production changes (Modified plates come to mind here), or are actual
quality control issues.

LEGO produced these days are of a slightly lighter/softer feel than those produced
10-40 years ago, again, a change done by the LEGO group, because they changed
the way that the plastic is used within the production of the LEGO parts...

I do believe that the Star Wars set that you have IS a genuine set, but because
you are probably remembering how LEGO had their sets when you were a kid, your
experience is saying that the LEGO you are now handing is 'inferior',
and therefore 'fake', but is actually the genuine article.....

Regards,

Paul

As has already been requested, i'd love to see photos of various pieces including
2x4's if possible, top and underneath.

An image of the logo would certainly help.

Might even be real China-made parts. The plastic from that factory does have
similar differences from the other factories worldwide.
So, is it real, really counterfeit or just a misenterpretation of the fact Lego
had quality issues in China ....?

This would be the first that I have heard of clones actually having LEGO on the
studs. Do you have a photo that highlights the differences ("minor differences
in shape") between a genuine brick and one you suspect is counterfeit?

Ok. Will attempt pictures when possible. Thanks

If it was a defective/ fake item. Your feedback does not look like your un happy
with the item you bought. Have you contacted the seller? What does he have to
say about this?

Thank you
