| Sourcing suitable Lego at a good price here is not easy either, nearly everyone
expects a high price, can’t blame them but it makes it difficult if you want
to resell.

You bring up a good point about time.
I'd say the best % return on paper would be from cheap used bulk with figs
and listing every possible piece.
I recently acquired 60lbs for $330 that included approx. 125 figures.
Now, if I were to take the time to list EVERYTHING I could, the unrealized gains
would be huge. A couple thousand dollars maybe, but it would take me a super
long time to list and even longer to realize those gains + I don't have the
space to do all the parts.
I already flipped one architecture set to ebay out of that lot weighing around
2 lbs for approx $80 after fees and shipping. I'll do this with all the bulk
from this lot eventually and probably 2X to 3X on just that as an immediate realized
gain and this will leave the 125 figures as "free" that I will then add to my
BL store.
The % gains are not there, but I can process way more lots if I sell off the
bulk in 2 or 3 listings and then add 100 or so figures to my store vs taking
the time so sort, store, list, pick, pack, and ship 24,000 pieces over the long
run.
Just different strategy, I also know a lot of sellers that do very well with
parts and having a huge variety.
|
Ah, that makes sense, I was talking strictly about parting out new sets. Those
will usually be 2x or 3x almost by definition, as I think that roughly gets
you an hourly pay of something in between €15-€25 which is an acceptable "career"
for people. If we'd have sources all over the place that give us 5x, pretty
soon the prices will just drop until we settle at the 2x-3x level again.
But as for used, yes, a whole lot more work is involved there, so it makes sense
that you can have 5x there - and probably still end up with that same hourly
pay as you would for parting out a new set at 2x (with the benefit of course
that you have much more cool and unique things to draw customers with).
I think it depends on where you live whether you can source used stock at an
acceptable price, though. Here it's pretty hard. I get the impression that
in America it's common for people to not really be aware of what they have
and just dump it for cheap, while in the Netherlands everyone thinks they're
suddenly an expert or somehow have hidden gems in their attic that the world
was waiting for, even though they don't know anything about Lego. The same
way all Americans know "don't eat yellow snow", all Dutch people know "don't
sell your Lego cheap"

Some good points about time management. I think this is key with reselling Lego...max.
gains could be seen by parting out every piece and listing individually but to
run this as a full-time business and your sole income would take an enormous
amount of time to build up the stock levels (acquiring, sorting, checking, storing
and listing) so your hourly rate would be very poor, especially to start with.
Probably best thought of as what's the best hourly rate method that can be
achieved in a reasonable amount of time? Say 1-2 years to have a working store
with a livable wage. I don't think individual parts would get you there that
quick.

I don't find new sets vs used sets to have too too much difference in part
out time though.
|
It depends if the used set is already checked for completeness and everything
is genuine. If that is already done, then part out times are similar. Unless
there are stickered parts that you want to sell as decorated, that's a bit
more work.

Thank you so much, Crystal! I like your store too, and since I see you have a

+1 to just about everything. If I had gone into the field I majored in over a
decade ago, I still wouldn't be making as much as I do with Lego, even after
the high self-employed tax rate in the U.S. (I was not pre-med nor engineering).
Know your worth. Don't sell yourself short (in this case, the idiom is literal).
My biggest strength is that I make virtually zero mistakes on orders, ever, and
that's worth a lot in this business. It took me years to realize that, though.

A big difference here is new vs used. New sets, whether sold as part outs or
sets, don't have the profit margins that used ones do but then they do not
require the time used sets or parts do either.

Agreed.
After I posted I realized I should specify. Used is def a different ballgame.
That said, I still do better than 2x on new stuff.

To each their own. I just know, for me, personally, if I was doing only new,
for only 2x, it would not be worth it.

I think the unwritten rule many sellers have in their heads is that x2 = OK.
x3 is great, x4 is exceptional and x5 is fishermen's talk. Well, I heard
that in America there can be some crazy discounts of 50% or even more, but
I doubt there are sellers who manage to make a robust steady x5 on the majority
of their inventory. If I had that, I would need to work only a few hours a week
And it would mean everyone would dive into the business, and bring down the
price. I think eventually things always gravitate towards something between x2
and x3, since that's the level that generates an acceptable pay per hour.
By the way what you describe is not x2 but less, since you have included postage/fees/taxes.
Sometimes smaller stores need to settle for 1.5x in order to beat the competition.
Bigger stores will draw customers anyway and can afford to be more expensive.
I started out with x2, now I'm near x3.
Money = time = space. If you want to earn more money, you need either more time
or more space. You can work long hours at a low profit rate, or you can crank
up your profit rate by growing your store which enables higher prices. My strategy

That depends on when / how you sell. If you are a private rather than a registered
business seller, they regularly do 70% off the percentage fees. If you list then,
you pay about 3.6% plus the fixed 30p and that includes the payment fees. Compare
that to the 3% charged at bricklink plus the extra ~4% and 30p for PayPal, and
eBay fees turn out somewhat lower.

other 20% together for sale to cover my costs.

Not to be a pedant but I think it's a Y - there are three arms instead of
four.
There are also a few "vented" studs around - that's just a single bar across.

For me it would be not buying mixed-up bulk sets to rebuild and sell as used
complete sets. I didn't realise just HOW MUCH TIME it takes to check each
part, find / order replacements, list, store, package and post each one. Return
on investment for most sets is so poor if they come in mixed-up bulk lots that
even if the Lego was given to me for FREE I still don't think it would be
worth the time in most cases (unless the sets are rare / expensive!). Deffo not
worth it for City sets and similar though...
|
I'd have invested $50k in bulk brick purchases (instead of only $3k) from
the guy I met who had the scrap contract with the Mexican Lego manufacturing
facility. That stuff was pounds and pounds of great bulk parts, with thousands
of the same parts, but almost all of it worth big money. Remember the rare LBG
6.6L bars and 1x1 DBG cones without ridge from the 10179 sets? I had thousands
of them!

Funny personnal story on BL.
12-14 years ago, I got lucky, I got a surprise in a collection I bought. A boxed
106-1 Unicef set in great condition. I was ecstatic, I knew it was worth a lot
of money, but there just wasn't any info on the price guide then, nothing.
I told myself, I'll ask a ridiculous price and lower it as the months go
by...no hurry.
So I priced it at 1200 USD...and yes, 7 minutes later, you guest it...it was
sold...
My bad...

Funny...I like buying mixed-up bulk sets and selling them by the part no matter
what fancy set was in there. I do feel a bit guilty sometimes breaking up the
remnants of an older set. I even break up the minifigs.
I have enjoyed every aspect of running my shop except how ridiculous the cost
of postage has become. When I started a domestic order shipped for $1.75, $3
for international. Today, I invoiced a buyer in Germany for $15.36 in postage.
Sigh. So, I guess what I would do differently is start sooner than I did.

Storage bags like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Hefty-Slider-Plastic-Storage-Quart/dp/B01JLPJKVO/ref=sxts_rp_s1_0
They're usually available at box stores and grocery stores, but they're
usually more expensive than regular storage bags. (Sorry, I always forget that
"Ziploc" is a brand name -- I think of it as the product, kind of like Kleenex
/ "tissue paper" or Crock-Pot / "slow-cooker".)

Ziploc (which, apparently, is a brand) does them: just search for “ziploc slider.”
And if you want another brand, search for “ziplock slider.”

That's funny, because that process of buying bulk, buying missing parts,
and selling complete sets was the only way I was able to build up my backstock
of parts, build up my personal collection, and keep my partner happy by staying
in the black financially. Without doing that for 6 years and thousands of sets,
I never could've launched my huge store last year. I always made at least
a 300% profit on every bulk lot I bought, even after purchasing missing parts.
So while that didn't work for you, it's the only reason this Lego thing
worked for me. Granted, I was privileged to have a partner with a "normal" job
that supported us the whole time and believed my long-term plan would eventually
pay off... as it has.
Anyway, what would I do differently?
1. NOT SELL EMPTY BOXES. They don't work well with Instant Checkout, they're
not worth enough to justify the time spent finding shipping boxes and packaging
them up, box buyers are some of the most fickle and frustrating buyers (most
of my cancelled orders are empty-box orders), and they're difficult to store.
But I feel like I'm committed to getting rid of my stock at this point. Sunk-cost
fallacy, I know.
2. Price higher. For years I sold sets at fairly low prices to make quick sales
on auction sites, Bricklink, Craigslist, etc. I should've priced higher and
had more patience.
3. Used freezer bags with sliders instead of regular ziplocs. I've probably
wasted hours of my life and millions of skin cells from my fingertips by opening
and closing regular ziplocs.
4. Probably should've bought that Cloud City Boba Fett for $150 about 6 years
ago.

Probably the single dumbest thing I did comes with a caveat.
Once things started taking off with my own personal leftover new pieces, I spent
a couple grand buying new inventory to part out and adding as I went. I saw
things scaling up with larger orders so I went ahead listed EVERYTHING despite
having 24 sets that still needed parted out.
It actually works okay for sets that are

unfortunately did this with a few City Gardens and Hogwarts Castles which are
~6000 pieces... And of course everyone wanted the few rare pieces that come
in those sets. I sold a lot of parts but the time it took to skim through the
instruction books to find part to find the bag was a pain in the butt. Then
there was the issue with having multiple open bags in the box dropping pieces
which slowed down the parting out process.
Not doing that again.

As far as I know the peroxide trick only works on white and old grey. I think

Unfortunately, it only works temporarily (the bricks will usually return to an
even more yellowed state in 6-18 months) AND it makes the bricks much more brittle.
Nearly every piece I tried it with cracked when I tried to assemble them with
other parts.

Despite repeated posts on siocial media about using hydrogen peroxide WhiteBright
etc. from what I've seen and read the whitening effect may be limited long-term
and may actually make the situation worse - look on YouTube for DownUnderBrick's
video about it ("WARNING: DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR LEGO!")

Or add % sale and make the sale prices the new base prices on the My Inventory

I was planning to do that either later tonight, but it's imprecise just raising
the prices X amount. I was hoping there was a way to average only US stores'
inventories.
Changed the topic to "announce" because this serves as an announcement for my

| Hi,
I received this flag in a used 4195 set. The skull and the pattern around it
are just plain with no colour. Usually the patterned part would be red. Is
this a know variant or could this be sun/another form of damage.
Thanks.
|
I would guess it's a misprint that just didn't receive the red layer
of ink. Nice find
|
In which case, then the tan "layer" of the skull wasn't applied either
|
Seems as though it must be some kind of factory error and has avoided all coloured
ink. Must admit I think it looks a little odd on the ship when built I would
have preferred the correct coloured version. Ah well seems like its a bit of
a rarity at least.
|
A very nice set, let me know if you'd like the proper flag for it, Lindsay.
We've some stock from partouts of both sets, that we may never get around
to listing. I'll send as a Christmas gift to you, a new flag for your set.
Just pm with your address if interested.

|
| Hello all! Unfortunately we will be closing down our BrickLink Store, G & A Bricks, permanently a short time after our break for the holidays. Issues with ill family (non-Covid related illnesses), and full time jobs are preventing us from running our store at the capacity we originally wanted, and we are unable to keep up with our shipping as we normally would be. Instead of continuing to run our store with only a small fraction of our time being able to be dedicated to it, we will simply be closing the doors on it for now. We are looking to sell everything we have left in our store, and we believe some of our prices are able to reflect that. Most of our prices are just above cost for us so they are the lowest they have ever been.
Once we sell out of the stock we currently have, that is it! We won't be doing our weekly restocks, and we won't be ordering anything new in. We have vintage sets, retro sets, sets from the mid to late 1960's! All of these sets, and Minifigure parts have to go! If you're looking at placing a larger order (larger being anything above $500) please feel free to contact us as we MAY be able to give further discounts. Any orders above $500 automatically receive free shipping.
This is also a great opportunity for fellow sellers as some of our sets and pieces are listed at the lowest prices on BrickLink, some being 50% off the average sale price!
We also want to say thank you to everyone who has purchased from us in the past. This has been an amazing experience. We have met many wonderful people and have enjoyed our time being able to be a part of this community. Thank you all, and have a safe and happy holidays.
-The G & A Bricks Team

What a fantastic idea, Caleb!
Please run with it, I’d really enjoy sponsoring such a wonderful project. But
as to taking a role, I don’t think I’d best qualify among the many others here,
many of whom have expressed their strong affections and love for their longtime
furry companions, much like yourself Caleb. We (son, daughter & I) truly enjoy
dogs (and cats), but because of my son’s allergies, the closest we’ve come
to having a pet was our friend, Oscar: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1153630
Put it together and I’ll come up with a very nice contest prize. Perhaps several
prizes for the runners-up too. I would enjoy seeing the pics and reading the
anecdotes shared, above most other things here.
Warm and happy holidays to you too...

| That's a great step from you. We only use paper bags, paper carton and paper
tape for our packages. And we receive a lot of positive feedback about our package.
If you want to make it 100% sustainable you can use also paper bags for your
minifigs. Search at Ebay Germany for "Papiertüte 6,5x9 cm". Good price and a
good size for the minifigs.
Let's make the planet greener.
