I think BrickLink has a broken order process now due to the ever changing online
buying experience. For me I have seen an influx of buyers since the LEGO takeover
of BL, most new, but many clearly aware of the site though having limited use
of it in the past.

These buyers are often of the mindset that they are the ones calling the shots
on cancellations, payment time frames, etc. all while having no regard for the
BL or my store terms regarding such. Anything from unilateral ability to
cancel, expectations of free shipping, allowance to pay 10-days after ordering,
etc. and just the general "buyer rules" attitude that other selling sites (need
I name them?) have allowed buyers to abuse sellers with. These other sites have
taken some steps to protect sellers and buyer alike, but BL has fallen behind
the times.

Granted, these buyers are often new to BL which has a major learning curve, but
when you sell the exact same item 3 times in one week, and all 3 buyers want
to cancel after accurate shipping is invoiced for, it gets annoying. Why not
ask for a quote? And why only ask to cancel after days of the invoice being
sent? This and the increase in NPB buyers tying up stock have left me convinced
payment time-frame allowances need to be changed. The following is my view of
the changes this site needs to consider to move forward in a all-parties friendly
way:

Suggested Changes
1a: NPB should be changed to allowable to be filed 3-days from invoice (not
the order date).
This would be similar to other online selling sites. Not
auto-started, but optional so situations and agreements allowing additions, extended
payment, etc. can all still run as before.

1b: NPB should be allowed to complete after 7-days from the invoice date (4
days of being opened).
14 days (21 if buyer responds) is a ludicrous amount
of time to send payment or tie up a sellers stock. 7-days is actually really
long, but much better than 14-21.

Most all decent buyers pay well before 3-days, and a NPB started is simply a
reminder to pay as it cannot be completed unless the buyer fails to ever pay.
So I can only see this as a positive change making bad situations end sooner
than later and keeping stock available on the marketplace.

2: Additionally I would suggest that a feature be added to protect sellers
WHILE allowing unconditional buyer requested cancellations.
However, if
a cancellation is buyer requested the buyer should not be allowed to leave a
review (or an auto-positive given by default), and they should by default be
given a feedback showing an "Order Was Canceled By Buyer" message with a neutral
rating by default. Like an NPB's three-times-and-you're-out policy,
the buyer cancel option should be limited to 2, maybe 3 in a 6-month period,
or something reasonable. This allows buyers a true out when needed, and protects
the seller who after a customer gets pushy or rude the ability to safely allow
cancellation (when the buyer initiates) without needing the NPB and now current
2-3 weeks to prevent an unwarranted negative feedback. As is the system turns
good sellers into captive sellers, needing a NPB to save them from nightmare
feedback, but at the extremely high cost of wasted time and tying up their items
for weeks. No buyer needs 7, 14 or 21 days to pay and should not be granted
an ability to push payment back this far.

The current system for cancellations and NPB simply needs reformed. Buyers need
to be able to cancel in select situations such as a pushy seller trying to gouge
them on handling/shipping or holding the order hostage refusing to cancel, a
threat of pay or get an NPB. Sellers likewise need protection from the long
tied up inventory, or negative despite granting buyer an unwarranted cancellation.
The above should reduce 90% of all problem orders to being resolved in days,
not weeks, and all parties moving on largely unaffected. Bad sellers and buyers
will still get weeded out, and good ones will thrive.

Well thought-out, Jonathan.

Voted yes. Not that I expect the needle to be moved in doing so, but as a show
of support. I think most are aware of the issue's persistence here, and the
need for adjustments.

Though I've never used any of these corrective options available on both
sides of a transaction, I've seen time and time again, the frustration the
current system generates for those that do use it, especially for the selling-side.

#1a and #1b have been suggested in the past, to no effect. The best way to stop
that problem is to lock your store down, so that no order can be created without
IC. That stops the problem cold. People wanting to cancel an order rarely happens
after they have completed payment.

Yeah this x 10000

I love my new buyers, I have not had issues with them, my last NPB was a 200
+ feedback person. Before that I can't recall, because it was year ago at
least. I get many many 1 and 0 buyers and I haven't had what you are talking
about happen at all.

Turn on IC for small orders and stop dealing with this. There is no need to.

Glad your experience has been mostly positive. I too love new buyers, always
helping them through the learning curve here when possible. Just because you
haven't had the experience we have had (and others I have talked to recently
as well) doesn't make me dislike new buyers as your above statement would
imply. We love any customer who is not a pin to deal with...which is still 99%
of the time.

You probably don't sell the same items I do so have a very different buyer
base ordering from you. 9 of 10 newer buyers are indeed quick to pay and everything
is super. But it only takes a few orders of hot items, and large quantities
to net a largely negative experience when having to go through the NPB process.
Happy you haven't had them, but I have had 5 the last month alone.

IC BTW won't fix the issue, I actually do have it, but as always allow buyers
to opt for manual invoice as it is ALWAYS cheaper, and smart buyers know that.
And large orders are the ones we cannot do IC on and are the problem orders
99/100 times. So again, won't solve the issue. Parts buyers are generally
very prompt to pay as they have projects they NEED them for so delaying only
hurts them too. Set buyers though can easily change their minds and want something
different.

A good buyer experience like you have never leads to NPB, so the length of allowed
payment time in your case makes no difference. The sellers dealing with NPB's
are the ones who have voice to call for action here, and really, 3-days or a
week is plenty time to pay for an item ordered. I've been buying and selling
for 15-years here now (to your 4) and times were very different back then. Modern
online shopping has changes much for the better, but BL is left in the dark ages
on timeliness for payment/cancellation/NPB. We used to get about 20% of orders
paid with money orders in the day, and that took a week minimum for turnaround
times. Now it is 1 in 1000 as money order with most all being PayPal. Speed
of the process has picked up, and payment terms need to reflect the same as a
general rule.

Again, good buyers pay fast, so 3-days isn't going to hurt them. Bad
or no-show buyers are the problem, and once you have them getting inventory back
in shop is of utmost importance. Because really, I have never had a buyer pay
after NPB except once when the buyer simply had an emergency that called him
away for an extended time. By 1-week it is obvious if payment will ever be sent
or not. So why make sellers wait 7-14 more days to relist items? I do hope
the powers that be do reconsider correcting this aspect of the sales process
here. We have seen progress with IC but not enough just yet for store like ours
who cannot create a IC system fitting to all aspects of our diversified sales.

hi,Jonathan

I totaly agree...these are very good suggestions!

lately i have an explosion of 0 feedbackers myself
ordering/not reading store terms
never reply on messages/reminders and most of them end up in NPB status, holding
my goods ''hostage'' for 8 + 7 = 15 days.
and one of them for 21 days because he replied [demanded cheap or free shipping]
[do not know if these newbies are children without permission or adults]

since the new shipping rules about shipping goods in enveloppes in Europe,
I have to cancel a lot of orders [which I offer buyers if the order value is
less then the shipping cost ..as service]
because almost nobody reads terms or shipping cost list anymore
they just order away

so I hope bricklink will considder your ideas
especialy the 3 day payment term,
because in europe we have IBAN/bank transfer also and auto checkout is not always
an option for us

This idea was tossed around between administrators (including Dan) in 2007/2008.
It was deemed at the time to be an interesting idea with some positives, but
ultimately not preferable.

Thirteen years later, I can't tell that anything's changed.

I think for now learning to use search terms would be easier than adding loads

I think there are so many categories right now that they are very averse to creating
more. I'm doubtful that a suggestion that would add more than a dozen new
categories is going anywhere.

I would rather have more categories with less entries per categorie so for me
the suggestion would work.
Categories are more easily to be found than subcategories/entries or whatever
they are named.

You can achieve much the same thing by searching -sticker in the decorated category.

I finally realized that once I submitted a new inventory, it is relatively easy

Every time I went back to make a change in the submission form I lost all my

disappointing it would be when submitting a large set.

Maybe a warning on the form not to go back, but instead to submit the inventory
and then edit it would be helpful....

I would really like to delete/file... quotes. If I hover over 'my store'
icon I see 13 Quotes. They have all been filed so I would prefer not to see this
number there. Please change something (maybe display only not filed quotes?).

Thanks.

Sorry for my bad english, but this idea I really want to share with you

I think that Bricklink need functionality for sellers to offer Promocode additionaly
to coupons.
Coupons can be used just by registered users and mostly work with returned buyers
But promocode functionality is a reason for seller to grow up his social network
auditory and could help to bring more new users to bricklink.

I think it should work this way:

Seller can set up many promocodes at the settings.
He can chose the % or fixed ammount for each promocode.
He can set up it same way as coupon (for parts or sets / new or used / additionaly
to current discounts or not / how long it will work for buyers (should be possible
to set up permanent promocode))

On the forum should be special Topic for promocodes. It will work instead of
forum messages like "coupon for each who write me here"

Promocodes are realy good working strategy for social marketing and also can
be added to the bussiness cards or to the store page or many other places.

How do you think about it?

I think that is a great idea and I would think that it would be quite easy to
implement at the checkout page.

Great idea!

The bulk coupons feature has been terminated because of spamming.

  Hi there,

Do you think a feature will be added in which when you part out a set you can
add in how much the set cost and then the system would calculate how much was
paid per piece? It's a pain adding it in individually especially when you
have over 300 items! It would be nice if a feature like this also worked out
how much each part cost based on how much they sell for (depending on if you
picked current average/6 month average etc). For example if you bought a set
for $20 and it had 4 parts equally the cost would be $5, however if two of the
parts average was $10 each and the other two were $1 each having a cost of $5
for each part wouldn't make sense. Having to work that out for each part
by hand is just way too time consuming, but if the system did it on part out
entry it would be awesome.

This will only work if parts always have the same cost price in each set, else
you would have to make separate lots for the same part (there is only one mycost
field per inventory item).

Then it could offer 3 options, a bit similar to remarks:

Old mycost
New mycost
Average mycost

Those options are already provided during part-out, except it is not average
but quantity_average: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1109&q=my+cost

The option is only shown if you have the "mycost" input fields enabled in your
store settings.

for $20 and it had 4 parts equally the cost would be $5, however if two of the
parts average was $10 each and the other two were $1 each having a cost of $5
for each part wouldn't make sense. Having to work that out for each part
by hand is just way too time consuming, but if the system did it on part out
entry it would be awesome.

This will only work if parts always have the same cost price in each set, else
you would have to make separate lots for the same part (there is only one mycost
field per inventory item).

Yep, I proposed this several times. It should let you enter what you bought it
for, then it can calculate a profit ratio, and with that profit ratio it can
calculate your selling prices for all parts back to their cost prices. In order
words: If you bought a set for 10 and the part out uploads 20, you know that
50% is profit, so if a part is uploaded for a selling price of 0.32, the MyCost
for that part should be 0.16.

The MyCost field seems to be a feature that was never fleshed out, just the field
was added but it doesn't really do anything. Under the previous management
it wasn't developed but maybe now that LEGO runs the show they might actually
look into it

Use Brickstock to do that.

BrickStock doesn't have an option to calculate / add the MyCost per item.

I've read it's easier to add the costs on Brickstock and upload the file
than entering the costs one by one on Bricklink.

Hey BL team, any update on this? It's quite annoying and I would still really
like it to get fixed sometime. Let me know if you need more details.

In Suggestions, Teup writes:
I've never quite understood why you are not allowed to set the minimum order
of a shipping method lower than the minimum order of your store. It's annoying
because if you have 10 shipping methods, then anytime you want to change your
minimum order, you need to also change it 10x in your shipping methods, for no
real reason, because the "master setting", the store minimum order value, should
determine it already.

However, it seems it's also causing another problem: Buyers can use the bypass
password to get around the minimum order, but it does not help them go
around the minimum order of the shipping methods. The result is that anytime
a buyer used the bypass password, they are able to order but unable to select
any shipping methods. So there will need to be a manual invoice.

I'd propose removing the restriction for shipping methods to have a minimum
order value that is higher than or equal to the store minimum order value - in
fact, I'd propose for shipping methods not to need a minimum value at all.
That should solve everything I described without any side effects.

I was under the impression Rebrickable did this for builds but not figures. Can
you combine different parts of figures on Rebrickable? That may be a good platform
for this idea since it doesn't have the barriers that Bricklink has.

What you are really asking for, is a method of taking an abstract collection
of official LEGO parts, and generating a BL compatible upload to a wanted list.
It doesn't have to be those figs, but they are a good example. It could be
for any abstract MOC.

I wonder how difficult it would be to run this on another site, and query the
BL catalog via the API ?

Nita Rae

Isn't this what Rebrickable is pretty much made for?

Thanks Nita for breaking it down like this. Another user suggested just that,
and linked Bricklink's instructions for generating such a list.

I'm going to explore this more and see what I learn. Obviously best-case
scenario is having this process available on Bricklink. But as many have pointed
out, there is a lot of red tape with an official LEGO site.

Here is a picture of what I had in mind. The entire "Wanted List" portion may
need to be removed because of copyright issues.

In the very least, it would be cool to browse Purist Custom Figures, and see
what official parts they consist of.

This is not going to happen. As one of the other catalog admins already stated,
there is pretty much a 0% chance that anything custom will not get added to the
catalog.

Randy

That should have read "there is pretty much a 0% chance that anything custom
*will* get added to the catalog". Damn double negative...

Dr Drew was an American surgeon and medical researcher, who pioneered the large-scale

Also allowing breakthroughs in transfusions.

He also was the first African-American to serve on the American Board of Surgery,

So, a pioneer in more than one sense.

Your suggestion to add functionality on this web site simply will not gain any
traction with administration.

If you think it's a really great idea, get yourself a domain name, make a
web site, take a bunch of pictures, create individual pages that reference the
appropriate part numbers, make a copy-and-paste box containing the particulars
as outlined here:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=207

Then folks can select the xml code from your site and paste it into the box on
this site.

Voila. Wanted list populated.

Whether your idea is good or not is pretty much moot because it's not going
to happen here. Because it's not.

Take a look:
https://www.bricklink.com/messageList.asp?ID=8&v=c&max=200&status=0

If you click through, you'll see there are suggestions there going back over
a decade. So once those get sifted through, then, you know...

I appreciate you weighing in on this and providing a source. I wasn't aware
of this issue.
The quote from the admin is:

"The problem with the download is that can be viewed as enabling profit. That
is why we cannot allow *any* IP (including IP belonging to the LEGO Group) in
models that are available to download."

I will need to read up on the policy to see if it's specific to downloads.
I'd be very interested to have an Admin provide more info regarding this
policy.

Multiply the number of headgear by the number of heads by the number of torsos

If only.

My main hobby in Bricklink is to build MOC Harry Potter minifigures. I surf the
web for ideas, get excited when I come across something clever and then obsess
over finding all the parts to buy. So yeah, I'd love to see more minifig
pics added in the MOC section here. But, for the reasons stated by others, I
doubt a clickable catalog is going to happen.

Just my n00b 2 cents.

I agree it would generate sales. Generic, unwanted pieces could find a valuable
place in purist customs. I've spent hours searching bricklink for parts I
have a picture of because I want to copy someone else's figure design.

There would definitely need to be a way to sort through figures based on certain
themes. Maybe even a way to sort by popular figures that people are adding to
their Wanted List.

Appreciate the support.

That kind of convenience would surely generate sales, but you'd have to find
a site that allows themes otherwise it'd be a total nightmare to navigate
through generically named designs.

Rebrickable has a catalog that allows themes, but a search for minifigures only
shows minifig-scale MOCs. Lovely idea though.

And none of them is downloadable. They are all “Display only.”

I don't see what why this would be so different.

Exactly.
How would your suggestion work without the ability to download the list of parts
(or put it in a WL)?

Yes.
Look at what’s happening (and what’s said) for the Studio Gallery.

You'd think they'd realize that customs add interest to the theme and
product and might lead to more sales, both on BL and lego's website.

"Cool ghosts, now I need to buy castle set so I have a place for them to exist
and I better buy some spare parts to make my castle bigger."

But no, all the [m=cas094](s) in charge veto anything that even smells like IP.

Yes, the authentic LEGO portion is crucial. There are so many creative ways to
use preexisting figure pieces. It would be fun to browse people's ideas,
and then have an easy option to add those pieces to my Wanted List.

Thank you Cory for your support!

I suppose someone could submit a photo that uses non-purist parts (even though
the rules would specify "official LEGO components only". But if the hair color/style
wasn't available in that color, the system would limit the selection to existing
components.

Users would submit their figure, and then there would be a list of components
that correspond to the appropriate official pieces within the market. I hope
that makes sense.

This would work well at the beginning, then someone would modify a minifig changing
the hair color or hair style. This would create a new catalog item. Repeat
this over time and then there are 1000+ custom minifigs. After more time there
are 10,000+ and so forth. At a certain point the entire catalog becomes useless
and impossible to manage because there so many custom minifigs it is difficult
to find the correct one.

I like the idea very much, contingent to (as you've put forward) all parts
are authentic LEGO.

It would entail more site work and details to be worked-out, but just might be
well worth the new excitement created for the LEGO minifigure on this site. Help
stimulate the sale numbers of what is a good portion of overall LEGO sales.

Vote yes!

IANAL either but it has already been ruled a violation on the Gallery.

fall under MOCs, which I believe are free use.

I believe you have to think again.

There is an almost infinite number of combinations of headgear / heads / torso
assemblies and legs. They cannot all be added and if they were, then they end
up being useless as you cannot possibly view them all.

Yes, it would essentially be minifig-only MOCs. The MOC Shope really is dedicated
to builds, and even then doesn't have a components list.
The Studio Gallery is limited to the digital components available, but at least
it hs a list.

This looks like a administrative nightmare for those maintaining the "Purist

alternative parts.

The likelihood of adding anything to the catalog that is not an official LEGO

now that the site is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TLG I would not expect that
disaster to be repeated.

My apologies if this has already been suggested.

It would be great if, in addition to showing favorited stores and those with
coupons first, you could also show stores in which you have open carts first.

We could make a feature where one item could be casually sold without becoming
a store, offered on the forum or some other way, and the sale could be official
and register for fees and everything. Buyer would know it was different from
buying from an established store, but it would make it easier for someone who
just wanted to sell 3 sets from their childhood or just wanted to get rid of
a box of their children's used Lego. Right now someone just has to tell
someone in the forum that they'll have to make a store and I expect 98 times
out of 100, they shrug their shoulders and go to eBay or Craigslist.

They shelved auctions about ten years ago.

It would be a good idea for job lots but I guess the problem is that people might
use it to scam. If there is no seller verification (the barrier to open a store)
then it wouldn't surprise me if we saw lots of listings for UCS MFs and the
like. Similarly, people might try to use it to sell license based MOCs that are
not allowed on the site any more. So presumably someone would have to police
it to ensure that LEGO is not allowing the sale of anything not allowed on the
main site.

I imagine people might also list ones with missing pages as incomplete. Although
if there is a description of what is missing, it should not be too bad.

Of course the alternative is individual entries for each instruction book.

on both the seller and the BL team.

Remedy Option 1
To prevent strain on the infrastructure of constant periodic backups of everyone's
inventory, the backup would only initiate when a user enters their store's
inventory page, and limited to certain time intervals (once a day, once per hour,
or whatever the system can handle). The seller would have the option of self
initiate backup as needed.

Remedy Option 2
If the infrastructure cannot handle backups on their own system, perhaps Bricklink
can prompt user with an option to download inventory prior to deletion or major
changes being done to it, and self administer restore function.

Remedy Option 3
At the least, the system should require a re-login to the account when inventory
deletion function is selected to prevent accidental deletion of the store's
inventory.

The above options are no mutually exclusive and can be implemented in tandem
depending on what Bricklink system/team can implement.

Some very good ideas and thoughts!

Or maybe LEGO can see money in it. $5 a month for insurance against accidental

We allow payment both onsite and offsite.
The issue is that offsite payments require the buyers to check the 'red'
paid box.
some buyers (specially new ones) mistakenly take this to mean that their offsite
payment didn't go through and re-submit payment for the second time (sometimes
even after the order was shipped) which creates more work to refund and with
the new paypal policy might also cost sellers extra fees.

It would be great if seller can manually check this paid box and switch it to
green in order to avoid this misunderstanding. i know we can mark the order paid
and shipped but a buyer yesterday in one of many examples wanted to make sure
they paid because they saw the box was red and ended up paying for the second
time.
Thanks for considering.

If you click on the edit order icon you get to change the payment status to paid/not
paid independently of the order status dropdown menu on you orders received page.

Does that help you in the meantime?

Sometimes buyers mark as paid (by ticking the paid box) when they havent - you
can change the status back to not paid on the edit order page in the same way.

I don't think i understand your answer, perhaps if you walk me step by step
then i might be able to understand better.
we change the 'order status'; drop menu to 'paid' or 'shipped'
but the buyer still sees a red checkbox next to the 'paid' checkboxes.
those checkboxed are not showing for me as a seller.
i do understand that buyers can check the 'paid' box even if they didn't
which is a different issue that doesn't really concern me however it would
be nice if the buyer checked the box accidentally if i was able to uncheck it-
but i don't want to sidestep the underline issue i raised initially:
Buyers that paid via link or sent a payment manually are not always aware that
it is up to them to check the 'paid' box to turn it green and mistakenly
think that their offsite payment did not go through and end up paying a second
time.
If i was able to check the box for or before they do and they would see it green
instead of red- it would reduce the occurrences of duplicate payments which has
been happening 1-3 time per month for us.

BricksThatStick is right, with this method you can check that box (separating
payment and order status in the settings and then change the payment status to
submitted or something like that).

But do you really need this? The box means "payment submitted" (not "paid") so
it is by definition a status update that only the buyer can make. The only thing
you can do from your side is verify the payment and update it to "paid". I don't
see why you'd want to update the status to "payment submitted", the buyer
can do this by themselves. The box can't be red if the order status is "paid".

Thank you, i'm going to try adjusting the setting to see if that works.
I agree that the buyer needs to change the box BUT in reality 1-3 times per month
i get a buyer (usually new) that doesn't know that it is their task and probably
believes that the system should have automatically change this to 'green'
paid status. when they see 'red' they believe that the payment they submitted
didn't go through and they pay a second time.

When a seller changes the drop menu to 'paid' or 'shipped' the
buyer still sees the paid box as red indicating unpaid (only when payment was
off Bricklink)
Thanks for taking the time to help, i'll let you know after i go through
the settings section.
Best wishes.

Ah I see, well, in that case it probably won't help much even if you change
it, because in such cases it seems like they are expecting realtime feedback
from the site. I include a standard instruction in my invoice asking buyers to
mark the order as paid after sending payment, might help too.
Probably good if Bricklink would improve the interface a little so that it is
clear for new users they need to do this. Best if it shows up in their to-do
items in the top right corner - that way they'd be more likely to understand
the system and more likely to do it.

Separating payment and order status can be done here by the way:

https://www.bricklink.com/orderSettings.asp?viewFrom=P

I am not 100% sure it corresponds to the checkbox, but I know that the grand
total showing up in a bold font on the seller's side corresponds to a checked
box at the buyer's side.

That does help!! Thank you!
I wonder if when i change the payment status to 'completed' would the
buyers box turn green?

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=121

Thank you, but the page doesn't address my question: if i (seller) change
payment status to 'completed' would the buyer still see a red box next
to his payment status or will that turn to green for the buyer?

Not sure, but if it makes the grand show in a bold font on your side, then yes
(maybe you need to change it back to not separating order and payment status
to see bold grand totals? not sure)
