  No it isn't
They've been letting spam accounts run rampant for the past year despite
announcing a "fix" coming "soon"

MrEvil from Ukraine was supposedly the culprit, he's been banned since August
2023, and the spam continues... somehow we're supposed to think they care
about keeping the site safe?

If they can't even deal with simple forum spam, how the hell are we to trust
them with our account security?

"Oh just report it so the forum mods can deal with it"
Yeah, rely on the volunteers instead of paying your security team to come up
with a premanent fix for it... makes total sense

What a goddamn joke

How do you propose we solve the forum spam problem?

A "member" registers in India or the USA, starts a single thread in the
discussion forum advertising gummies or escorts, the thread is cancelled by the
moderators within minutes or hours, and the account is deactivated and anonymized
the same day that it was created. Rinse and repeat.

It happens a few times every night, and it seems that, with the help of the community,
a few human moderators can keep on top of the spammers without too much difficulty.

Yes, BrickLink could implement more advanced technical solutions to prevent spam
accounts from being created in the first place, but it's not necessarily
worth the investment just to prevent a few relatively harmless spam posts every
night. I'm sure the BrickLink developers are busy dealing with more important
bugs and vulnerabilities.

The only time is was a real problem was on December 12th, 2022:
https://www.bricklink.com/messageList.asp?msgDate=12/12/2022

I'm not sure what happened there and whether all those posts were cancelled
by mods or by admins, but I sense that BrickLink's primary weakness is
not its leadership but its age. A switch to a newer, more modern platform might
help tighten security, but that's not a simple fix and will probably face
a lot of resistance from longtime members like XP did.

Was the genuine email that Bricklink send a link to follow?

I got one but deleted it, surely a genuine link about a scam should not be another
link to follow??

The one they sent out on Monday, March 4th? (Subject: BrickLink phishing email)

Yes, that email does contain a link to the following help page regarding One-Time
Pin (OTP) for sellers: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2615

But the body of the email does not ask you to click on or open the link; it merely
cautions against logging in from links sent in suspicious emails and advises
sellers to enable OTP to add an additional layer of protection to their account.

So step 3 of becoming a seller is proof of identification. In the list of what
they accept as proof they label driver license, passport or identity card. I
provided my drivers license thinking that is enough since that is what they ask
for. The website will not accept it even though it is not expired and it also
shows my birth date. I am unsure if I should trust this website because of this
issue.

As far as trusting this website is concerned, BrickLink is trustworthy; you can
take my word for it…

Did they give a reason why your driver's license was not accepted? You do
have to be at least eighteen years of age to have a BrickLink account, even if
you have a valid unexpired driver's license showing your date of birth.

It could also be some stupid technical reason that has nothing to do with your
proof of identification (e.g. image size is too big, image is in the wrong format),
and therefore "the website will not accept it".

But as Carissa pointed out, you already have a storefront, so you may not be
as far from selling as you think. It may be a simple matter of opening your store.

There used to be four separate variants of this part in the catalog (one for
each of the four directions), but BrickLink merged them all into one.

Now, no one can tell which direction BrickLink is going.

International Women's Day (March 8th)

Normally, such a holiday would trigger a flurry of sales posts from sellers trying
to capitalize on the celebration, but alas, there was no such frenzy.

Perhaps the new limit of one sale post per month is preventing sellers from running
(or announcing) such holiday sales? https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1437060

At least one seller has decided to run a "March sale", grouping some
of the month's major holidays (International Women's Day, Ramadan, and
Saint Patrick's Day) into one: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1458584

I admit that International Women's Day came and went this year without my
notice, but rest assured without fail I notice the women themselves.

Thanks,

This is not a definitive answer, but I'm pretty sure they are included.
Like Peregrinator, I list PayPal fees and sales tax as business expenses.

Technically speaking, I think sales tax is not supposed to be included in the
total, but, for whatever reason, PayPal includes it anyway.

Indeed. I was just making fun of the number of acronyms they use.

If someone is talking about GST/HST/PST/QST, you know they're talking about
Canada. There's no "SST/LST" here, just state and local sales tax.

Sales tax and VAT are essentially two different names for the same thing: "consumption
tax".

From Wikipedia:

Consumption taxes are usually indirect, such as a sales tax or a value-added
tax.

  Sales Tax.

Sales Tax is "normal" for you in USA to pay, not VAT.

You said: "but if I order from someone internationally I have to pay the
VAT?"

No, you din't have to pay any VAT.

I think Connie is complaining because BrickLink supports VAT exemptions for European
buyers with a VAT number but not sales tax exemptions for American buyers with
a sales tax number, which is a grievance some have passionately expressed in
the forum: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1268303

Connie is confusing sales tax with VAT. Americans pay sales tax; Europeans pay
VAT. Canadians pay GST/HST/PST/QST.

To Connie: Sales tax applies to everything you buy regardless of where it comes
from. Europeans still pay VAT on things they buy from other countries.

Well, with only 751 lots for sale, someone could circumvent the limit by simply
placing nine separate orders.

In all seriousness, I don't think you have much to worry about. With an inventory
as small as yours, you may find it hard to attract buyers even with rock bottom
prices. Unless, of course, you have a lot of hard-to-find items for sale.

Trust me, my inventory used to consist of a small collection of used parts and
I still didn't receive many orders despite listing many items for a literal
penny.

I ended up giving away the last of it for free: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1273149

Perhaps the market has changed since the pandemic, but as a wise Nubs once said,
if you want to make more sales, then you need to add more inventory.

I wrote him again that also for Switzerland he has to pay taxes, now hi gave

Ship it to Delaware.

In all seriousness, it does sound a bit strange. If you're not comfortable
shipping the order, then you may want to request to cancel from the buyer.

I hope that helps.

Hmmm, yes, but DHL definitely has a service where they hand off to USPS for final
delivery, at least here in the USA (DHL e-commerce). FedEx and UPS have similar
services. I'm not blaming the seller here, from what I see he did everything
correctly, it's just weird that DHL doesn't have their act together.

The seller says they only ship with DHL Express Courier, so I'm guessing
it's door-to-door. But yes, ordinarily DHL would hand off the package to
USPS for final delivery.

Good point Chicken - And I might be wrong about how the APO works, but in defense
of the original post why the negative feedback. It seems store likes to ship
DHL for its own reasons and can't complete the order. The Buyer is asking
a lot ordering from an overseas location from a Italian Seller, then not understanding
seller is not willing to ship items back to USA to then be forwarded back abroad
internationally to a APO location. I rest my case, retract the feedback.

I think the problem is that DHL is a private company and therefore doesn't
have access to U.S. military bases. Poste Italiane will hand the package off
to USPS for final delivery.

The idea that we can search by state/province and does NOT run afoul of EU rules but we
would run afoul of EU rules if we searched by city, is an idea that does not seem to make any sense.

It makes sense to me.

It's a lot easier to stalk/harass someone if you know what town/city they
live in than just the state/province.

For example, knowing that someone lives near the intersection of 30th Avenue
and Steinway Street gives you a lot more information about that person than if
you just know that they live in New York.

Of course, just knowing what neighborhood someone lives in isn't very useful,
but if you have additional information about the person, you can identify them
quite easily.

That's not to say that people outside of the European Union cannot use this
feature, but that people within the EU may not be able to use it freely, and
that decreases the incentive for BrickLink to develop it in the first place since
much of the BrickLink community resides within the jurisdiction of the EU.

we do not have any evidence that adding this feature would be impossible or would run afoul of any legal regulation.

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1454977

At least here in EU it's forbidden to display the location of a private
buyer or seller.

That's enough evidence for me. If you want, you can look up the actual law.

I do agree, however, that this would be a useful and desirable feature, and I
would use it if it were developed. However, given the slow pace of development
around here, I'm not very optimistic about that happening anytime soon.

Does the EU regulation specifically say that province/canton does not count as
location but city does? Unless that's the case, I would respectfully say
that once again your point is not relevant to my request.

Well, it is relevant to your original request insofar as many BrickLink members
are citizens of the European Union and therefore governed by its laws. Thus,
BrickLink has a strong interest in maintaining compliance with European privacy
laws so that they can continue to do business in Europe.

This may also explain, at least in part, why BrickLink has not yet developed
this feature. If it can't be used by many of their members, that decreases
the incentive they have to develop it in the first place.

Or, it could just be pure laziness or indifference on the part of BrickLink and
the LEGO Group. They don't seem to get much done around here these days.

Furthermore, based on your responses - and on a clear pattern evident in a lot
of the many, many other comments you post in other threads here - you are jumping
to conclusions to explain or in some cases defend the BL status quo, and you
are doing so without sufficient evidence or information to draw those conclusions.

I wouldn't say that. Sylvain is one of the most experienced members of this
site. You don't earn a violet brick without learning something in the process.

Now, as far as that other Sylvain goes… Well, that's a different story.

But both Sylvains are citizens of France and the European Union and therefore
write from the perspective of such people. Things are different here in the States
where people are less concerned about privacy and more willing to share and sell
their data, as well as to discuss politics and religion in a public forum.

For example, jokes about the three-fifths compromise are okay, but jokes about
pine trees will get cancelled.

The effect of a documentary showing off a guys greatness is it will promote the

It will promote LEGO, though, by sheer virtue of Pharrell's popularity.
I can't say I'm personally a fan—just not big into music in general—but
he's got quite a following. Perhaps the LEGO Group will even release a set
in his honor.

Or it could be a total flop and a waste of money, but we won't know until
after it's been released. I'm hoping it does well; the guy deserves better.

I can understand if you feel that LEGO has become overly commodified, but those
concerns are better addressed directly to the LEGO Group and Universal Studios
rather than in a forum full of music lovers.

Well, if I were a Romanian buyer searching for stores in Romania, I'd probably
search in Romanian rather than English.

I don't think it's that far-fetched. BrickLink already allows buyers
to search stores by name. Perhaps the same code could be used to give sellers
an optional text field where they can type their location.

Of course, sellers can type anything they want, but sellers that want
buyers to find them easily will make it easy for buyers to find them.

The advantage of doing it this way is that it is searchable, unlike the store
terms and about me page, which are not.

Only 710 years!?

In all seriousness, just replace the battery. There's no need to replace
the entire vehicle just because the battery doesn't work.

For example, I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. There was an issue with the battery,
so I paid $200 to have it replaced instead of thousands for a new one.

Of course, $200 could also buy you a decent Windows laptop or Android tablet.

But you do have a point, batteries are toxic. For example, I used to have

Sure, but once you've done a single transaction with any seller, no matter
how near or far they are to you, you can use PayPal Friends and Family or Venmo
or Zelle or CashApp or whatever to do the same thing. Knowing their location
doesn't have anything to do with that.

And once again, that has nothing to do with evading sales tax - it's about
going outside BL itself.

So your argument is that Bricklink allows local pickup, and lets buyers see sellers'
exact address, but to try to stop evasion of sales tax through cash purchases,
it doesn't let buyers SEARCH for sellers based on whether they do local pickup,
and it lets buyers see sellers' exact address after a single transaction
but won't let them search for just their city or ZIP code before they've
done a first transaction.

That's completely illogical and makes no sense as an explanation. Your point
is not persuasive, to say the least.

I think what yorbrick is trying to say is that being able to search a buyer or
seller's address may not prevent people from transacting outside of BrickLink,
but it makes it easier since you can circumvent BrickLink entirely without even
having to place a single order to begin with. The way it currently works, at
least BrickLink gets the first order.

For example, a member registered in Pennsylvania could be in Philadelphia or
Pittsburgh, but there's no way to know without placing an order first, and
I'm not sure how many people are willing to drive 300+ miles to pick up a
BrickLink order.

At least that's BrickLink's rationale. It could also simply be due to
the fact that they have not yet developed this feature, but that doesn't
mean they never will.

There's nothing stopping people from putting their address in their store
terms or about me page, but those fields are not easy to search.

Sorry I just haven’t been able to see how ev’s are good for the environment,
they are good when they are working but when being made or disposed of they leave
a nasty mess.

You've personally seen the someone dispose of an electric vehicle before?

But, in all seriousness, there was a recent discussion in the forum about recycling.

It turns out much of the plastic we recycle here in America is simply sent to
China and other less economically developed nations, where it simply sits in
landfills or is burned: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1445621

So, they send us their garbage, and we send it right back!

But one thing that Americans are good at recycling is cars. We love our vehicles,
and we like to keep them around even after they stop working. I know some people
who enjoy fixing old cars in their spare time.

Of course, the more complicated the vehicle, the more difficult it is to do your
own maintenance, but that's what licensed mechanics are for.

So, it depends on your perspective. Yes, the process of manufacturing electric
vehicles (particularly the batteries) is expensive and environmentally destructive,
but the vehicles themselves generally last longer and don't create as much
pollution while being driven, possibly being cleaner in the long term.

Electric vehicles still consume energy, but that energy can come from many different
sources—natural gas, uranium, guy turning a hand crank—not just oil.

Electric vehicles also work well in big cities, since braking can be used to
recharge the battery and you don't have to worry about the health hazard
of breathing exhaust.

But if you live in the country where the air is clean, there's little traffic,
fuel is cheap, and you've not much money, there's little reason to buy
an electric vehicle.

Some batteries also have a hard time holding a charge when they get cold, so
if you live in a cold climate, that's another reason to keep burning gasoline.

But the technology is constantly evolving, so it may not be long before someone
invents a battery that works in cold weather.

In short, there's pros and cons to both.

Yeah, it's a technical limitation of BrickLink. I can't understand why
you cannot simply copy the contents of one wanted list over to another, adding
quantities for duplicate items. But I guess that would require reprogramming
the logic behind this feature.

What you may need is BrickStore: https://www.brickstore.dev/

That should allow you to import all of your wanted lists, combine them into one,
and then export the combined list back to BrickLink.

While you're at it, you may be able to apply the orders to the combined wanted
list within BrickStore as well.

NSFW: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=M&catString=167.587

But, being dolls, they were marketed and sold dressed, not naked like they are
in the catalog.

What was LEGO thinking when they branded this??

Keep in mind that the LEGO Group was founded in the 1930s. Smoking was very common
back then and the adverse health effects of long-term smoking were not as well-known
as they are today.

In fact, the Nazis tried to stop people from smoking, at least in Germany (maybe
Denmark, too), but they failed.

It wasn't until more recently that people began to realize the true cost
of smoking, and quit. But many people still do.

Furthermore, these products were probably targeted toward adults rather than
young children.

But I wonder the same thing about Star Wars, for example. Sure, I understand
that the LEGO Group won't produce modern military sets because they don't
believe in violence.

But Star Wars is okay? Sure, it's fictional, but how many people will ever
see real combat?

But I guess the fact that it's more fictional (in space, etc.) makes it more
acceptable in the eyes of the LEGO Group than Russia vs. Ukraine, for example.

Though, the nature of the toy being customizable, many people use it to build
war dioramas. So, it's a bit of a moot point.

On a related note, someone in the Studio Gallery made a working cigarette dispenser:

Yeah, I tried that, and that's pretty much exactly what happened.

Dijon's strong stuff. Many supermarkets around here carry Colman's English

I'll stick with good ol' Heinz yellow mustard, thank you very much. Just
more proof that Americans don't have taste buds.

Well, that raises the question: Why are you ordering stuff from Europe when you
could simply order the same items from within the United States?

Unless, of course, they were rare items only available in Europe, but then sellers
can get away with charging more for shipping because the supply is limited.

We're done here.

Well, that might explain it, if international shipping from Norway is cheaper
than international shipping from the Netherlands or the European Union.

When I order something from California, I expect the shipping cost to be higher
than when I order the same item from a seller in the Midwest.

So you're unable to ship an 1 ounce package for less than $40 (37 Euro) to

I once shipped a four-pound package to France. It cost me $70, but I only charged
the buyer $40.

Pirate Ship's simple export rate starts at $13.

I understand your attempt to dodge the issue with "Personally, I wouldn't
complain about something unless I can personally do better" But it's
a clumsy attempt, and again not pertinent to the advise my original post offered;
for members to take another look at their shipping methods and rates or risk
losing sales.

My point is that, compared to U.S. sellers, European sellers are not losing nearly
as many sales due to high international shipping costs.

Europe is a diverse continent; there's no EUPS. I wouldn't expect rates
from one store in one country to match those from a different store in different
country, even if they're both in the EU (which Norway is not).

Most U.S. buyers are limited to just PayPal and Stripe due to sales tax collection.

Many U.S. buyers would love some more flexibility, but BrickLink hasn't indicated
any intention to add more onsite payment methods in the future.

Both PayPal and Stripe allow you to pay with a card, but that only works if the
card has the number written on it.

I do believe BrickLink has a lot of potential, but, for whatever reason (lack
of interest/investment from the LEGO Group), they don't seem to be taking
advantage of it.

It's more of a matter of personal philosophy. Personally, I wouldn't
complain about something unless I can personally do better; i.e., offer $4 shipping
from the U.S. to Europe.

I've only ordered from Europe a few times, but I was surprised at both the
speed of the delivery as well as how reasonable the shipping cost was to begin
with. But these were large orders, better measured in kilos rather than grams.

I suppose I could also raise my prices or set a minimum purchase.

Same number of the same part, with the same cart weight of 2.70 grams. So given

than fair shipping rate offered. I’d buy from both, but I’m done with having

No longer worth the effort.

Straighten out your shipping methods and rates, you’re hemorrhaging sales. Or
don't and let others pick-up those numbers

Just some advise I've long held onto and now don't need to, nothing more.

Just one of several recent examples:

In my personal experience, shipping from Europe to the U.S. is far cheaper than
shipping from the U.S. to Europe, EU or not.

So, in other words, it's U.S. sellers that are losing business, not Europeans.

But in this context, Napoléon was referring not to himself or his own forces,

I did read your entire post. I just wanted to make sure that I did see what
I thought I saw: a comparison between the BrickLink catalog changes and the historical
devaluing of hundreds of thousands of enslaved African people. Thank you for
clarifying.

Well, to be fair, it was PlanetEarthToys that first brought up diversity in the
context of the BrickLink catalog. But I can understand why some would not want
to make such comparisons.

I'm just trying to bridge the gap between those on opposite sides of the
Mason-Dixon Line. Many sellers wonder why they don't receive more orders
from Arkansas: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1448903

But I understand perfectly well. I'm very fortunate to live just down the
road from a LEGO retail store where my parents bought me toys, but there isn't
a single one in the entire state.

But anyway, to bring the topic back to the current BrickLink catalog changes.

If you read my post carefully, you'll notice that I am referring to the diversity
of the BrickLink member base (there's no such thing as the "average
member"; we all come here for different reasons
), not the catalog itself.

The catalog is a mere reflection of the member base.

The current catalog structure, as well as many of the variants in question, date
back to the early days of the site (or at least before I joined), when BrickLink
was just a community of AFOLs.

But BrickLink is more of an ecommerce marketplace now; the majority of current
members have registered since the start of the pandemic:

https://www.bricklink.com/calendar.asp?v=M

And the current catalog changes are merely a reflection of BrickLink's new
member base, few of whom care about or are even aware of such minor mold variations
as those being discussed in the forum, or even use the forum to begin with.

Now, many of the old guard are understandably upset by these changes, and newer
members who value BrickLink for the completeness and historical accuracy of its
database are upset as well. But these people are a relatively small yet active
and vocal minority, and the powers that be must weigh their concerns against
the more casual users that make up the majority of the site's member base.

This also brings into question the very accuracy of the catalog/database to begin
with. In addition to the variants that are currently given separate entries in
the BrickLink catalog, there are even more unsplit part variants that are not:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1451681

Thus why I'm largely indifferent toward the changes. Yes, we are losing information,
but there's even more information out there that we don't have.

Furthermore, more information is not always better. Old variants may be nice
when trying to restore old sets using historically accurate parts, but it can
be unhelpful when trying to build a simple MOC.

Being a minority is has its disadvantages. There's strength in numbers, hence
why we got rid of that ugly three-fifths compromise. Now, at least congressional
apportionment represents everyone equally, but you only need a simple majority
to pass legislation that applies to everyone.
