The images look like they were photographed from different sides, but appear
to be the same.

Are there any physical differences?

This

Set No: 8881 Name: Power Functions Battery Box

8881-1 (Inv) Power Functions Battery Box
1 Part, 2008
Sets: Power Functions

Indeed, 8881-1 is like a service pack. See the second photo.

I have compared the photos. To me they appear physically identical; I just wanted
to know if they were in effect the same - whether a "set" (of one item?) or a
component (one item) in a set!

I don't get the whole service pack thing. :/

Nope. I have none. Dark Ages.

If the sets that use them are using them differently, — that is, if they aren’t
substitutable —, the variant would really be necessary. It wouldn’t be the first
time TLG thought better about making a part “in System,” like

Part No: 4081 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment (Undetermined Type)
*
4081 Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified
Marked for Deletion

or

Part No: 4623 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Arm Up (Undetermined Type)
*
4623 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Arm Up (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified

I wanted to look at the building instructions to look for a mathematical necessity
for the change, but there are some 14 sets that use them, so knowing from which
sets they came from would have narrowed the search.

On the other hand, another possibility simply is that some are not LEGO

You type very well with polybags in your hands.

I didn't realize this was coming. It means I'm gonna need a Flynn Rider

There is no difference in the actual parts. In its catalog, Bricklink has an
entry for both the Lego Element ID Number 88009 (stamped onto the part), and
another number, for Power Functions elements. You'll see that there are
more "For Sale" items in the Bricklink bb892c01 catalog entry https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=bb892c01#T=S&C=1&O={"color":1,"iconly":0}
than there are for the 88009 entry https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=88009-1#T=S&O={"iconly":0}
. Shop for the best price and availability.

came out last year, retroactively an Age of Ultron set. It is very similar to sh167. There is a slight deco change to the legs that reflects nothing on Mark 33. There is a larger change to the upper torso with a large gray panels with silver cables.

Looking at the suits side-by-side, (sh498) is definitely the Mark 43. Since the
"cables" are in the same places that plates are, on (sh167), they likely represent
the skeletal inner layer of the suit, visible before the outer pieces are added.
It is an odd design choice, however, as the Mark 43 is never shown in
such a state.

My 10 cents is dont. But if you insist, I am about 900 figs into the approx 1090
figs and variants, it has been about 6 or 7 years worth of work and I estimate
5 to 6000 US Dollars so far. I suggest that you break it down into small batches,
and start a want list and go from there.

You will find that being SW attracts a premium, even common figs get expensive,
there are more than a few figs that will cost you $100 plus each up to $400 or
500 for a cloud city Boba fett. Add in some of the Rare older ones and you have
to search the BL catalogue regularly to find the bargains. I guesstimate that
the average per fig is $10 to 15 each - as new.

Good luck and many grey hairs to you on your quest mate.

Regards

Cameron

*
sh498 (Inv) Iron Man - Mark 43 Armor, Trans-Clear Head
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Avengers Age of Ultron
are both named Mark 43 in the catalog and though they
are very similar, they are distinguishable and I fear there may be an error.
But maybe not?

Minifig No: sh167 Name: Iron Man - Mark 43 Armor
*
sh167 (Inv) Iron Man - Mark 43 Armor
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Avengers Age of Ultron
came in 3 Age of Ultron sets and was originally named "Iron Man MK43".
Tony did use Mark 43 in that movie. And you can recognize design elements from
it in the minifig. All 3 of the scenes depicted in the Lego sets were when Tony
was wearing 43 in the movie. In short, this seems like a closed case.

Minifig No: sh498 Name: Iron Man - Mark 43 Armor, Trans-Clear Head
*
sh498 (Inv) Iron Man - Mark 43 Armor, Trans-Clear Head
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Avengers Age of Ultron
came out last year, retroactively an Age of Ultron set. It is very
similar to sh167. There is a slight deco change to the legs that reflects nothing
on Mark 33. There is a larger change to the upper torso with a large gray panels
with silver cables. This also doesn't depict anything in the Mark 33 Armor
or the Mark 34 used late in the movie. I don't readily find an MCU Armor
with that design element. What's worse (and embarrassing) is that this minifig
was originally named "Iron Man (76105)". It was me that changed it to "Iron
Man Mk 43 (Trans-Clear Head)" and then to "Iron Man Mark 43 Armor (Trans-Clear
Head)" and I have no recollection of what information I was going on. Maybe

  Not sure if this is in the correct area to post. I am wanting to start and complete
a Star Wars MiniFig collection. I am looking for a list with variants included
to help me with this. Any push in the right direction is appreciated.
