Oh, you're just jealous because I found a 1980s train set which has the parts
list printed right on the set box, which makes it ridiculously easy to see exactly
what was included.

| | Did you know if you submit the exact same inventory request 37 times in a row that you will get a prize? It's a super-secret Easter egg built deep into the site code by Dan himself.
I never believed it myself, but one day I tried it just to see and it's true! About a week later I got a brand new McLaren P1 delivered to my house - and it wasn't a toy or model, but a real automobile.
I've heard from a very reliable source that they send someone to eliminate you if you try it more than once, so I never tried again. Besides, the cost of even just changing the oil in my P1 is outrageous.

To be clear, my earlier comment wasn't meant to question the original submitter's
good faith; I realize it could have been inferred as such, which was unintended.
But to follow up on a previous remark, how can we know b-type is more common
(cf: rules) from a sample of one, anyway?
I can't dismiss the original inventory as innacurate; what I can do is ask
for further input from others to establish precedence between versions, thus
properly following the rules as they stand. I suppose a review of the rules themselves
would be out of the question?
In the meanwhile - please advise how to proceed. Should I add a-type as alternate,
for the sake of inclusion?

| It's not so much that the instructions were wrong. The early Technic sets
each had a history of significant improvements. Many of them have multiple versions
of instructions (see this Bricklist):
https://brickset.com/sets/list-18333
...and often there are further improvements visible from box photos and early
advertising (see this post - corrected links are posted later in the thread):
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1027168
In this case it appears Lego added 2 more of the "new" 16-tooth gears to replace
a 24-tooth and an 8-tooth. This was likely to reduce the speed of the engine
when the model was being pushed fast.
Typically parts were simply added to the roster when improvements were made.
So I would say that there should be 2 regular and 1 extra of the small gears.
2 are necessary anyway to build the lathe shown on the side of the box (and 4
of the 24-tooth gears).
The 40-tooth gear isn't necessary to build any of the models, btw - it's
used for adding an electric motor. But growing up, this was the only 40-tooth
gear I had, so I was glad they included it! It should of course remain in the
Regular section.

| Now I remember better
On the box, middle top, the gears on the engine are different than what we can
find in instructions. At the time, I was puzzled and proud for this discovery.
There were also some mistakes in the instructions.
We can see in the image that two small gears 3647 were used. Indeed, on the right
side, two
were replaced by one
and one
.
There were a third 3647 as extra.
I don't know one 3647 should be added as regular and one as extra or two
as extras.
In Inventories Requests, SezaR writes:
| This may help:
One gear 3647 is used for the main model. If you check the instructions, after
the end of main model, it shows how to add a motor. I believe the second 3647
is meant for this putting on the motor. There was also an extra.
For many years, this set was my sole source of technic parts.

Agreed. In fact, there's an extra layer of awkwardness in this set's
inventory - it is the only set from 1985 (and in fact, the first ever)
which lists type 4085b as primary.
It's been 15 years since the original inventory and therefore it'd be
preposterous to ask whether the souce was MISB or not; I strongly suspect
it not to have been so.

Even now there are some BL members (certain of them experienced) who have trouble

as having a b-type since 1986, and a c-type since 1993. That discussion does
not prove anything in itself, and nonetheless... cries "uncommon" regarding b-type
in 1985. Which should be enough for now, as per the current standard
I'll follow elias3's lead and consider a-type as regular, and b-type
as alternate. Should I submit a brand new request, then?

And I'd say otherwise; in fact, the eighties saw the introduction of grooved
tiles, but not grooved jumper plates.
Which made up for some pretty ugly sides on models - but I digress.
Would you kindly provide one example of one eighties set with a grooved
jumper? In fact, I'll settle for one from the late nineties, and thus consider

Alas, it is not.
For those of us that collect sales tax, having that field in the order download
spreadsheet would be extremely helpful, along with the street address and city/zip
code. All of this information is required when filing sales taxes in NY.
Thank you for all you do!

| "Sounds like a lot of work? You are probably losing money too. The average
sold price is lower than it should be because so many incomplete sets are being
sold as complete. If sellers saw the real average price they would set their
prices higher and Bricklink would benefit from the higher commission.""
Same for boxes of minifigs where SETS instead of boxes are listed, causing an
average price for the boxes far too low.

find in instructions. At the time, I was puzzled and proud for this discovery.
There were also some mistakes in the instructions.
We can see in the image that two small gears 3647 were used. Indeed, on the right

There were a third 3647 as extra.
I don't know one 3647 should be added as regular and one as extra or two
as extras.

One gear 3647 is used for the main model. If you check the instructions, after
the end of main model, it shows how to add a motor. I believe the second 3647
is meant for this putting on the motor. There was also an extra.
For many years, this set was my sole source of technic parts.

in manual/box art, other criteria?
|
You can find that information on this page:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1562
The standard is that the most commonly-appearing part is the regular and the
less-common part is the alternate. I believe this standard was enacted to make
errors less likely when parting out sets.
However, I'm rather dissatisfied with that standard because it's somewhat
difficult to know which version of a part appeared more frequently, especially
for older sets. I'd prefer to see the variation which appeared first listed
as regular and any later variations listed as an alternates.

| I notice however an inconsistency in your last paragraph: if there is never
a 100% reliable way to know which extras come in which set, and it is
an exercise in probability anyway, then it becomes a matter of faith to consider
any extra part. Which ones do you choose to validate/discard, then?
|
I'm not sure I would consider it an inconsistency. It's more of a general
misunderstanding of the purpose of the Extra Items section of an inventory.
This section exists to make it easier to deal with potentially-appearing
extras when parting out sets.
When extras are added to inventories only after being verified as appearing in
brand new sets, then I think the extras section is reliable enough to fulfill
its purpose. What I'd like to avoid are extras submitted because 49 sets
contained the extra so it is assumed the 50th must, too. I gathered this was
the approach you might be taking with the red 3070b, which is why I questioned
you on the white lever.
As for which extras are approved or not approved, I admit that there are few
ways to verify the veracity of these types of requests. I look at the totality
of the circumstances and make a decision.
| For example, I submit to you that not a single set from my childhood, no matter
how small, came with a solitary lever in it
|
This is a good observation, but a small sample size and likely only representative
of a single area of production. Nevertheless, I agree that some extras are nearly
guaranteed to appear in a set no matter when or where it was purchased. And
you finding extra levers in all of those new sets means that every set in which
you found an extra lever should have the extra listed as such in the inventory.
| I do not add what I am not sure of.
|
Thank you for that.
Your request has been approved.
