Hi there, I don't come on here a lot anymore. I received an email about paying
my store balance for $1.71 and I currently don't have an open store, I haven't
for years. So I logged on and the fees are from 2017! I've never received
any invoices before so this is totally odd to me. Also, when trying to change
my password it kept telling me my 3 hour window to change it had expired. Finally,
I got that to work after four tries. I log on and there's a message about
the site being hacked on November 3rd. So now I'm worried about my whole
login experience today. Can someone assure me everything is normal about the
above concerns? Thanks!

part of that may be with the site being laggy for a little while but as for the
fee part it seems bricklink has sent out payment invoices to many people who
haven't sold in years even if the account balance is very low.

I would say that these claims are time-barred, at least in Europe. Maybe not
in the USA. Bricklink would do well to refrain from making such claims.

Did you get an email a couple of years ago when they started to request yearly
clearing of seller accounts even if they are under the threshold, and not pay
it at the time.

Do you intend to use BL in future, or don't you care about risking suspension
if you don't pay the small amount you owe?

Oh, I definitely paid the bill. I've just never gotten any emails before
about it.

Just a normal day on BrickLink.

BrickLink doesn't normally bill seller fees unless they meet the minimum
threshold ($5.00 for U.S. sellers and $10.00 for non-U.S. sellers), but sometime
in the past few years, BrickLink started billing sellers once a year, even if
their balance is below the threshold. For example, I was below the threshold
in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and I still got billed. The fact that you owe fees from
2017 seems odd, but if the email is from @bricklink.com and the fees add up,
then I see nothing wrong with it.

There may simply have been some sort of technical limitation with the site that
prevented you from being billed in prior years, or perhaps you were billed but
did not pay. You may not be legally required to pay fees that were assessed several
years ago, but it's only $1.71.

On November 1st, some hackers gained unauthorized access to user accounts, likely
via stolen credentials. The site went down on November 3rd, and when it went
back up on November 8th, BrickLink required all users to change their password
for security reasons. The fact that you had some trouble changing yours may simply
be a technical issue with the site rather than an artifact of the hack.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit.

It’s like Bricklink subbed out their billing to a medical insurance company.
You owe us $582.86 from a doctor procedure you had in 2011. Payment due net 15
days or we send you to collections.

I remember once I received a $0.74 check in the mail from my insurance provider.
Another time, they put my account in collections because I missed a $20 bill.

It is not like that at all. If a seller had owed that much at the time, they
would have been billed and suspended years ago for non payment. And if they don't
pay now, no debt collection procedure is started. They will presumably just suspend
the account. And if the account is no longer wanted, that is not a big deal.

I think rtzx9r was not referring to the amount but to the fact that all of a
sudden BrickLink is forcing sellers to pay fees that were assessed years ago.

I'm sure health insurance works differently in England, but I've experienced
similar things from my insurance provider here in the U.S. rtzx9r works for a
medical device manufacturing company so they're probably familiar with how
health insurance works.

Right, but the deal always was that bricklink wouldn't bill you until you
reach $5 (or $10 here) so there was an implicit agreement that you would only
be chased when you reach the threshold. The seller should have known about the
fees they built up and could have even paid it (back when you could pay your
bill at any time) even if they were not specifically asked for it. I imagine
that they would have received an email about the fees due when BL first started
clearing bills for tax purposes yearly, and ignored it at the time. And then
the next time it was sent, they ignore it. And so on until they finally log in
and look. In that sense, they would have been informed of the fees at the time
(but not invoiced) then invoiced yearly and still not paid what was owed.

If someone doesn't pay a bill when they have been informed about it, then
they should have action taken against them. It is small amounts, so not a debt
collection agency but suspension of accounts is possible. BL should probably
have billed yearly a long time ago to stop the situation of small fees going
unpaid for years, and then suspended accounts if they don't pay the yearly
bill, just like stores are suspended if they don't pay the monthly bills
above the threshold. That is quite different to sending large (and possibly unknown)
payment demands years later with rapid escalation to debt collection if unpaid.

If someone really doesn't care about their account now, it seems they can
just ignore it and they get billed again every year and they can ignore it and
nothing happens. Maybe BL should write-off those small unpaid bills, but ban
the account and keep records of banned accounts in case they re-register.

Just got my bill... fees from August 2000 all the way up to Feb 2001... I'm
almost certain I paid that $4 by cheque years ago, but would struggle to prove
that now I suppose...
