| Hi all, is there a way to determine what year a particular piece/color came from?
Someone was looking for a dark red piece from 2002. I have several of that color
piece but have no clue what year they are from. Thanks!

No, there is no definitive way. There are some indicators for age such as the
font of the LEGO logo and small specific mold variations such as solid/hollow
pins and other minutia, but we do not document all of those here on BrickLink.
If someone is after an older Dark Red part, it is likely that they are after
the older version of that color. There are several distinct shades of Dark Red.
For instance, one appears to be more opaque and orangish, and one appears to
be slightly translucent. The only way to really know is by direct comparison
with known examples.

I noticed there are a couple of extra numbers on each piece. It would be nice
of Lego to add a code for the year it was made. Thanks for responding!

Agree on the desire for the year to be more identifiable. Those numbers are most
likely the cavity number of the mold… as many injection mold tools have multiple
cavities so the press can shoot 4, 8, 16+ of the same item each cycle. They number
them so if something needs to be addressed they know what cavity it is.
