The Terms of Service include this as a reason for order cancellation:
“Seller provided a shipping fee that was too high (not clearly stated in the
Seller’s terms and conditions of sale)“

What should I do if I discover the shipping fee was too high when I go to send
the package? People at the Post Office I go to often point out cheaper ways to
send a package when I go to ship one. If I make an honest mistake, what happens?

The only way I see to avoid breaching these terms is to heavily underprice shipping.
If I do that, then shipping will almost always cost me more than the buyer pays.

I’m about to open my store and don’t want to make any mistakes.

That is for a buyer to cancel their order when told how much the shipping is.
If you are able to ship an order for less than the agreed upon price you can
refund the difference. Noone will want to cancel an order because it cost less
to ship.

You can tell the buyer, then refund them any excess payment.

To be honest, for domestic orders, there are only 2 ways of shipping: Ground
Advantage and Priority Mail. You can easily get estimates for these on USPS (retail
pricing) or Pirateship (commercial pricing)

So, instead of guessing at the cost, just find out the actual price before you
invoice. A scale and a way to print labels online are essential really for running
a shop. (Going to the post office and paying retail is overpaying for shipping.)

Good luck,
~Jen

In hindsight, it might have been more accurate to say that I'm worried about
setting up instant checkout incorrectly. I don't know if I can go through
the process you describe if I use instant checkout. I read that allowing instant
checkout is helpful for getting people to order from your store.

Why not? In everything we learn, we make mistakes. They are a guarantee.
At least you aren’t learning surgery. Embrace the challenge.

I suggest putting aside some money for your learning to ship effectively. Say
$100. When you mess up take the amount from this pot. Figure out how to estimate
better. By the time the pot is empty you will have paid yourself to learn a
new skill. Win win.

I use manual invoicing for larger sets. They are hard to predict in terms of
shipping cost because they are often in non-standard sized boxes.

For regular orders, I looked at the zones and averaged out weight bands, then
tried it for a while, then adjusted accordingly. Like someone else said, give
yourself time/money to make mistakes. You shouldn’t lose much on regular orders;
estimating should come pretty close once you get a few. I stopped using Priority
mail for the most part because it usually only saved one day.
