Recently for a classic set, 6928, and received two black Spacemen. One helmet
is damaged, missing chin strap, and has the marking “6 Lego 05” and the other,
very mint, has the markings “4 Lego 06”. Everything checks out they’re both vintage
Lego black spacemen but just never heard of the markings inside the helmet and
what they mean. The white spaceman also checks out vintage but his helmet just
has the number “12” inside it. Any classic space helmet marking experts out
there? Any info would be appreciated.

All my black have Lego logo, my red ( at hand ) are all numbered only and the
blue and yellow have both versions.

I have a lot more but can’t get to them at present.

They're mold numbers. In fact you'll see similar numbers on many parts.
Probably others on BL who could tell you more.

6 is the master mold number. 05 is its individual number on the mold. Fot examble, model
6 may have 30 helmets on it, so each would be numbered. This way if a TLG employee
notices a bunch of defective malformed helmets that can look inside and see which
exact mold is having the issue.

Exactly right. This is common in injection molding and you’ll see these little
numbers on plastic bottle caps etc It helps with quality control and knowing
what each cavity on the mold is doing regarding parts and dimensions in the event
there is an issue and part of the tool needs to be fixed.
