| So I was mid-sale with a bricklink seller, had confirmed twice I was intending
to purchase the item once he'd confirmed shipping cost (he was the one who
told me to wait). I confirmed again once actual shipping cost was advised - and
the item is still sitting in my cart - and then I hear nothing for two days until
he tells me oh sorry, someone else just bought it. Grrrrr
Would it not have been more ethical for him to tell the second person 'sorry'
and continue the sale with the first purchaser (me)?
Wish I could place feedback without having purchased!

Hello and welcome to Bricklink. While it is possible the seller knew of another
buyer, it is very likely another buyer simply went to their shop site and bought
the item you were looking at while waiting for a response. It stinks but is the
u fortunate side effect of waiting for a quote.
I am hopeful you can find the same set elsewhere for a similar price. Don’t give
up!

Hello,
I am sure that it was a very frustrating experience for you. However, items in
your cart are not reserved for you. There was no way your seller could've
known about or stopped another buyer from completing the transaction. I know
you want to assign blame for missing out, but there was likely no intentional
action taken by your seller as you claim.
If you are working with a seller on price, you could ask them to reserve the
item for you until your sale is complete. Otherwise, all items on BrickLink are
available to all buyers until you complete the transaction.
I hope you find the item you need from another seller!
Good luck,
Jen

Hi Jen
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I think you've misunderstood me however,
I have not suggested he did anything wrong intentionally. My question was regarding
the ethics of letting me down, given he was the one that kept suggesting delays.
And while I didn't mention it in the original post, if it hadn't been
for the fact that his store shipping options weren't working for me, I wouldn't
have been going back and forth in the first place.
As you've suggested in your second paragraph, there is a way a seller can
stop another buyer completing the transaction - by reserving the item. Now that
I know that may be an option, should I find myself in the same position again
(hope not!) I'll suggest it.
Cheers, DJ

This has always been one of the main problems I have with Bricklink because if
you hold out until you know exactly what you be paying in shipping/fees you potentially
miss out but if you jump straight in to secure the items you can potentially
find yourself at the mercy of a sellers fees and shipping terms!
This is why I have always called for compulsory quotes where stock is held until
the seller responds to the quote meaning the buyer is able to cancel at anytime
if they don't agree to the sellers shipping charges and fees!

Nope, that way you could get your whole store stuck in limbo.
Learn how BL works and you sometimes miss out on an item.
We all miss out on great stuff all the time.

| Yes, let's give buyers the possibility to hold your stock hostage until you
reply plus three additional days for the buyer to decide if he/she would like
to order.

Hold stock hostage!? So over dramatic I mean seriously whats a few days? Either
way you could always set quote times at 24 hours for buyers to make a quick decision
and if it bothered you that much just opt out and opt in to instant checkout
only that way you don't have to worry but give different options for different
sellers!
It seems a lot of sellers here expect everything to be on their terms? It's
more important that buyers can shop safely and aren't subjected to the pitfuls
of unexpected and unfair terms through feeling pressured to buy what they need
in a timely manor!

If you would not mind keeping some of your parts/sets unavailable during holiday
season for example, be my guest. But to make it compulsary could cause abuse
of the quote option.
As far as I'm aware a quote will automatically cancel after three business
days, how can you set the time limit to 1 day?
I make and receive quotes for my job on a daily basis. We never keep items on
hold for a potential buyer, quotes are always 'unless sold'. Neither
have I ever received a quote where the items are reserved during the validity
of the quotation.

I'm only suggesting making it compulsory if your not using instant checkout
which seems fair enough to me with all manual orders actually being treated as
quotes where they can also be cancelled at any time on the basis of the order
not being clear on what the buyer is paying compared to a instant checkout order.
Either way if your held item is in that much demand during holiday season it
will sell after quote has expired! Do you really think a basket of items not
visible for a few days really makes that much difference?
| As far as I'm aware a quote will automatically cancel after three business
days, how can you set the time limit to 1 day?
|
What I'm suggesting would be a change to the current system therefore quote
timescale could also be a change to that system?
| I make and receive quotes for my job on a daily basis. We never keep items on

|
Like I say if you don't like dealing with quotes use instant checkout so
buyers can see exactly what they will be paying. If its not clear exactly what
the buyer needs to pay then the order should be treated like a quote where buyer
can change their mind if they don't agree to the shipping and or fees!
Having a quote system where items can be snapped up at any moment invalidates
the quote and is just a waste of everyone's time hence you have to have an
amount of time that items can be be secured in order to make the quote option
worthwhile

I had also a few years ago...
Ordered 10 lots maybe, nice and easy 3 digits value order.
Seller "Sorry, we don't have this, this, this... and this lot, it's
an error, because we're selling somewhere else, it's easier I cancel
the whole order".
No problem, fine enough, sh*t can happen.
But hours later, same lots and quantity uploaded, with price x2 or x3.
And a nice warm place gained in my Least Fav... in company with other happy bozos

Why did you need to get confirmation of the total price for a second time once
you had been told the total price? I know sellers differ in behaviour, but I
prioritise time for orders that have been placed rather than people that keep
asking questions (especially repeat questions) without placing an order.
As for being allowed to leave feedback without placing an order, no chance. That
was how ebay used to work in the early days and it was abused, both by sellers
leaving positive feedback for themselves and negatives for rivals or for people
selling things you didn't like.

Thanks for responding - after giving me a price for shipping and my confirming
I was happy with it, he then said 'wait, just in case it's cheaper when
I take it in to price it'. If it wasn't for the fact that I'd had
trouble with the shipping part of his store I would have just done an instant
purchase in the first place rather than all the backward and forward. And yes,
I know the feedback rule reasons. But it doesn't stop me wishing it could
be otherwise I didn't know about the 'reserve' option someone
else mentioned. Now I do if this ever happens again with another seller. Cheers

It would not have been ethical for the seller to tell a buyer that "sorry"
the part they ordered was not available. Why should someone who has actually
placed an order take back seat to someone who is still thinking about it?
This situation, though unfortunate for you, and frustrating, is about timing,

+1 the seller didn’t do anything wrong. If he had though of it he could have
reserved it but that was optional. The only way to “guarantee” that no one else
buys it (at least no one else on bricklink) is to actually place an order
