Hi there, new to the forums so I apologize if I am doing this wrong.

Recently I placed an order through a store's instant checkout system and
paid the price in full. The seller then contacted me promptly explaining that
an item did not fit in a letter mailer and as such I would need to pay for a
parcel rate. This made me feel a bit cheated as I don't feel as though it
should've allowed me to place a shipping order in letter mail if the dimensions
did not fit, but the seller was very nice and the shipping price was negligible
so I simply paid it.

Other times, sellers have done this they simply ate the cost and in one instance
even shipped two separate times so it would fit in letter-mail.

What is the standard on this? Is it my responsibility as a buyer to pay extra
fees if they are not included in the instant checkout?

I am about to place an order in a store and I think everything should fit in
a letter-mail (looking at their terms) but I am not 100% sure. If it does not
fit and they demand I pay extra for a parcel, do I have to? This has made me
weary of using instant checkout because if I cannot be 100% confident that is
the whole price, what is the point of using instant checkout? I feel like I am
getting a quote which may or may not be accurate.

Thoughts?

P.S. not trying to throw any hate to the seller in question here, was very happy
doing business!

Welcome!

That should not happen but it has been known that some items randomly have dimensions
of 0 when they shouldn't have any dimensions at all but its still the sellers
responsibility as long as you pay the quoted price wether thru instant checkout
or invoice its the sellers responsibly to ship it even if they loose money.

Other times, sellers have done this they simply ate the cost and in one instance
even shipped two separate times so it would fit in letter-mail.

Those are good sellers. Sometimes getting creative and shipping in multiple envelopes
is useful!

What is the standard on this? Is it my responsibility as a buyer to pay extra

No the buyer should not have to pay anything extra

you could always ask for the item to be removed from the order if it happens
again and most sellers are fine with that and will remove any item that doesn't
fit lettermail

As a seller I would eat the difference in price if it was minimal, say less than
$5.00. If it were more, I would likely email the buyer and explain the issue
and offer to split the difference.

Don't feel being cheated.
Some sellers enable instant check-out. They are good sellers and they want to
charge accurately and make it easy for buyer and himself to submit and process
an order. But for some reasons, the dimensions of some parts may not correctly
entered (by others or it was missing and the seller did not notice) or the order's
weight and dimensions are correct but there are too many parts and they don't
fit in a large mailer. Then consider yourself to be a seller in the following
situation:
- order's total: $15
- shipping costs charged (including handling fees): $4
Shipping with parcel within Canada to you: $20 or $25
Processing time for your order: 30-60 minutes

What would you do as a seller?

You can refuse to pay extra, but the seller has the right to cancel the order
and give your money back.

I think by now you have got familiar with CanadaPost's prices: shipping a
mailer is so cheap, probably the cheapest in the world. but shipping a parcel
is very expensive, specially from Easy to West or if you are located in a small
town far from a big city.

It is quite easy to know in advance if the parts in your order would fit in a
mailer. Just consider:
- all parts should be thinner than 1.6 or 1.7cm.
- there should not be too many parts. (Specially, watch out for order's of
weight above 250gr)
If in doubt, you can message the seller before you submit your order.

This week, I ship 3 large baseplates (26x26 studs) in a mailer. It is possible!

If I am to order oversized parts, I make sure I find a store that has multiple
of thick parts in my wanted list (or I order from Europe)

No, you should only need to pay the price they stated in instant checkout. You
can refuse to pay more and say that you would prefer to cancel for a refund and
shop with another seller. If they refuse, then file NSS.

If the extra price was negligible as you say, then the seller should really deal
with it rather than expect you to pay it. Even if I did feel the need to pay
it to get the order, I don't think I'd shop with a seller again if they
ask for more money after the sale has been made.
