| After a lifetime of building Lego kits, I decided to try to design one. I am
sharing the design early in-progress for feedback before I go higher. Rather
than imagine something from thin air, I am basing the model on Public School
51 (PS 51) in Manhattan, New York City.
[History aside: PS 51 was built in 1905, during the progressive era in the United
States, when cities made their first efforts to provide free public education
to all, especially poor and immigrant children. There was also a belief in the
health benefits of sunlight and fresh air, so you can find hospitals and schools
in many US cities from this period with massive windows and lofty ceilings. Finally,
at that time people took pride in public education, so the architect layered
detail on the facade, which inspired me to try to replicate it in bricks.]
I've attached a rendering of the building and a Google street view, and two
images of my model. I must say this process is addictive. There's always
one more change to make, and suddenly hours are gone.
I'm struggling most with the windows. I tried all the pre-built window frames
I could find, but I landed on 1x1 clear bricks because I decided to focus on
correct proportion first and foremost. In my dreams, the windows would be clear
panels, and I would add the panes via a decal.
I am also thinking of a 2nd model cut down to 3 floors (instead of 5) that would
fit into the modular cityscape. I haven't seen a public school there yet.
Someday I could add teachers and students in classrooms. Today, it's just
the front facade.
I'm thrilled to discover this community. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
