I don't think there is anything more annoying to a Buyer than the Seller
sending out a shipping notice when the Order has not really been shipped.

To me shipped means you have taken the Order to the Post Office. If it is
picked up at the house then check the tracking numbers to make sure that it has
actually shipped before you send a message saying that it has.

I agree some sellers do this to give the buyers the impression that their order
has been processed faster than is true.

However, BrickLink could solve part of this problem by giving us back control
of the Order Status, or at least giving us more options.

After Paid, my only choices are Packed and Shipped. So, I use Packed when I have
pulled the parts, Shipped when it's in a package with its label attached,
and Drive Thru when it actually gets to the post office.

Luckily for me, my post office is very close by, so there is seldom a long delay
between Shipped and Drive Thru.

Thanks,
Jen

Curious what your thoughts are on the business that bought BrickLink, LEGO, and
the way they operate? As soon as their Fedex label is printed, we get the shipping
notification, even if Fedex doesn't pickup the package for a week. It's
normal practice in the e-commerce industry that when a label is created that
a shipment notice be sent out. For example, if you print with PayPal, and it
has it send the tracking when a label is printed, even PayPal notifies that an
item has been "shipped" even if you only printed the label.

As someone else has also mentioned, there isn't always tracking when something
is dropped off (if you're a smaller store who doesn't have manifested
pickups by the carrier). If you drop at the post office, or in any kind of
shipping drop-off like a mailbox, the tracking may not happen even that day,
or for several days if a holiday and weekend are in between. Not to mention,
USPS in the US is notoriously poor at scanning from what I've heard.

Oddly, my last two Lego.com orders were delivered by UPS. I had thought they
used Fedex exclusively.

So far everything I've been receiving in Canada is still using Fedex, but
I think it's because they do some cross-border clearing/shipping from the
US to Canada for a lot of Canadian orders.

Ouch... I just now realized you all have to wait for your LEGO to clear customs.
I guess there's no LEGO distribution center in Canada?

I always thought there was, and assume there is (as we buy from our Canadian
site), but there's a lot that seem to clear through in Niagara and from what
I was told. A lot of sets take a while to get to us even though they may show
as shipping the same or next day (that's never ever the case though; usually
the tracking updates a week or two later, so it could be that it shipped for
them from a US close-to-the-border facility, into Canada, and then our actual
tracking finally updates).

That would explain why it takes so long to actually start seeing tracking updates
then. That makes so much more sense but you’d think that for a county that buys
a lot of LEGO like Canada they would have at least 1 warehouse here

TLG used to have a warehouse in Canada, but thieves snuck into the warehouse
overnight and siphoned out all of the pieces, leaving behind only empty boxes.

They started using other couriers this year, I think. I've gotten them from
DHL as well as from LaserShip.

I can second the LaserShip deliveries. Lego told me they started working with
them around summer I think. I had a few hiccups with them, where they never scanned
my packages at all. Hopefully they worked out all the kinks.

Agreed! Sellers on PayPal do this too as soon as the label has been printed.
You can view the details of the shipment and find out that it has not yet left
the seller's possession, but as you mentioned, it's annoying to a buyer.

One problem is that the details of the shipment, at least on the USPS website,
are not reliable. As was mentioned upthread, sometimes it takes a while (even
days) for the USPS to scan an item that's in its possession.

Yes, I used to have my mail carrier pick up outgoing packages but too many weren't
getting scanned until they left a regional distribution center. Now we drive
to the post office (yuck) and use the scanner kiosk in the lobby before dropping
orders.

If it has been collected and no longer in the control of the seller then I'd
say it has been shipped, whether or not it has been scanned.

As a Buyer I always give the Seller a reasonable amount of time to complete the
transaction. I never really look at it that closely, as they have a few days
to perform and 2-3 days shipment / travel time. The recent response times by
the sellers I have chosen have been exceptional. Helps to look at terms page
and nature of complaints store has raised. Only problem is with sellers not
adding tracking information to orders page.

As a Seller I have a process based on a smaller amount of sales, so kind of guilty
of above mentioned.

All orders go directly from paid to shipped w/ tracking as I'm done at that
point. Orders are picked up at my residence every mail service day Mon-Sat.
If your order was after noon it will be going the next business day. Never
had one complaint or inquiry by a Buyer. It's just not time efficient to
go back into Bl to update anything, as I may not Login again until I received
my next order. I’m lucky because my mail carrier is religious about scanning
my outgoing packages.

I think the Sellers you talk of have a different concept of service times, and
I would have to agree they should not be updating tracking knowing its days away
from them actually making it to their local postoffice.

This is often just a USPS issue (though not always). I drop
my packages off at the Post Office daily before 8am and most times they aren't
scanned as 'accepted' until that afternoon, evening or even mid-day the
next day. They have most certainly been shipped and USPS has them in their possession,
but from the tracking number the buyer would think I still have them. Also, I'm
not positive but I think when I print a label the shipping service (ShipStation)
automatically sends an email to the customer stating the item is shipped. There
was a recent thread about this.
