| Hi there,
I'm looking to attempt a scale model build of my home out of Lego. I have
not found many examples of this online aside from one person selling their services
via Etsy.
I was wondering if anyone on this forum might be able to help point me in the
right direction to get my project up and running.
I have downloaded Studio software as I figured this might be the best way to
plan the build but I'm not sure if I can then order my creation from the
plans?
There are other types of houses that I see you can download - could anyone recommend
if this is a better route to take?
I have found the Studio software a little tricky to use so I was also wondering
if there was another tool out there that others found better.
Many thanks, Jimmy

‘Scale model’ okay, but what scale? Minifigure scale? What’s the size of the
house and the size you’re aiming for the model?

Yes, you can make a Wanted List from your model and then look for stores here.

then https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2445 to buy.

Of course not!
See the help pages: https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us
(There’s videos too.)

| I did that myself as we were building my actual house a couple of years ago.
It helped to have the architectural plans. I basically built it to scale with
1 stud = 1 ft. It worked out close enough since my house is about 50 ft wide
and there's a handy 48 stud baseplate. I've always preferred just building
it without using software. I feel like that's somehow not in the spirit of
Lego, but just a preference I suppose.

More difficult to do when you don’t have any part or not enough or in the wrong
colour… or don’t even have any idea what parts and how many of them you need/want
You can also ‘discover’ new pieces you didn’t knew existed.
And, of course, way easier to test different colours, different builds….
Building without a plan or knowing how to start is already difficult. Buying
in order to build in the same circumstances is impossible.

It can be a good idea to lay out a rough plan with physical bricks, just to get
an idea of how big a final model might be, before spending too long on it. When
using stud.io I find there is always a bit of a disconnect with physical scale
when you can zoom in and out at will. You start building and only later realise
there is no way you are going to fit a 76 stud deep build onto a shelf! Let alone
afford to build it.

Not a problem for me: I think in LEGO units and I start by measuring the shelf
in studs

| It helps to have way, way too many Legos and also not really care about making
it perfect.

Depends on the scale you are using, I started with 1:1 scale, but quickly ran
out of bricks…
So I went to 1:2, then 1:4 until I reached about 1:64 and had just enough bricks.
For minifig scale you need to go a little bit bigger, about 1:30 to 1:45 ish.
Minifigs are American sized, quite thick on top and in the middle
Maybe show us a picture of your house to help you determine scale.
A good start is to look at your windows and find those in LEGO to determine your
scale.
Good luck,
Maxx
(or use DUPLO, quick and easy)

You might find this presentation interesting to get started on the scale decisions:

Note that the usual houses like the Lego Modulars series are not scale models.
They are very much reduced in size and complexity to fit on a 32x32 baseplate.

Indeed, but then it’s also the ‘LEGO style’, like a castle with only three rooms

| Thanks for sharing your detailed presentation. You immediately solved a problem
for me: centering a five-stud window over a 4-stud window!
