I have had a paypal case opened against me this morning. Buyer had placed a order
a few days ago and I presume paid instant checkout. Message was as follows

'I ordered 4 Lego figures through Bricklink from Sharon ****** store however
I never received an invoice, message or delivery information. Her bricklink store
has now disappeared and off the platform. I am sure my order, given the absence
of an invoice/message/delivery information, will never be sent to me and need
to rely on buyer protection'

I have checked my orders received and nothing has come through to me. I have
not disappeared off the platform and always send drive through message once shipped.
The paypal payment is there but the amount does not match any order I have. I
have refunded the buyer but now I am concerned this will happen again.

Is it possible that the buyer never actually complete the checkout and instead
just manually sent the money. They say to never underestimate someone but it’s
also a good idea to never overestimate someone

The paypal payment details has a breakdown on it Order/Postage/Handling fee.
I would have thought if he had paid manually it would just have an amount and
I would have had email notification from paypal to state that someone had paid
me.

It might be worth contacting paypal and telling them that this was a false order
/ scam attempt and that you want the fees refunded and that you have already
done the right thing by refunding. You can also block the paypal account from
sending further money to you and if you can work out their BL name, block them
here.

It might be innocent, it might be a scam. Personally, I'd just block them
if they are filing paypal claims without even emailing you first (and they must
have your email address to pay).

There are a number of new scams (at least to me) going around.

I had two totally unsolicited payments a few weeks back for the same amount (just
under £300 each). I did not recognize the amounts or the sending email / name,
there was no BL information and there were no other details with the payment
other than "LEGO". I refunded them both after discussing it with paypal via chat.
It turns out they were Friends and Family payments from what they then labelled
as a hacked account. While F+F payments cannot be contested by the sender through
PayPal, if reported as fraudulent to the card issuer then they can be reversed.
Worse still, seller protection does not apply if F+F was used as it is not a
sale (so there is no seller) - a business selling an item would not use F+F.
Sure enough, a couple of days later I got demands by email for me to send two
of the same expensive set internationally and they had the correct (but already
refunded) paypal transaction numbers. I didn't have and never have had the
sets they were demanding (not that I would have sent them), so it might be that
they didn't know my BL name but had got the email address through some other
hack. They picked a current set that is £200 at LEGO, so presumably were hoping
that I would be gullible enough to think that I was making almost £100 per set
on sending them.

Thanks for the info. I will look into it and you are right about the fees as
I have paid those on the order. It was not a massive amount but still its annoying
that this can happen. I just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

Does the paypal transaction details list an BLLIVE_INVOICENO_ICXXXXXXX ? If so,
open a Help Desk ticket explaining what happened and the paypal details, maybe
the order is in the limbo indeed.

No It has normal details on the paypal transaction. it gives his name address
email address etc. No different to any other bricklink transaction. I don't
want to email him in case it is some sort of scam but it all looks genuine. I
can only think he ordered and paid then it did'nt show on his orders placed
page and then could not find who he ordered from so the only thing to do was
open a paypal dispute to get his money back.

I have now received a email from the buyer. He checked out with Instant checkout
and paid for the order. It then did not show up on his orders placed page but
the Payment had gone through. He could not remember who he had ordered from so
there was no way of getting in touch and the only thing he could do was open
a paypal dispute. He his happy we have sorted it out but why has this happened
in the first place?

As Stellar said, bring the problem to the Help Desk (maybe give them the PayPal
transaction number), they are the only one who can look into it.

address as on BL)

I really can't blame the buyer in this scenario. At least is sounds like
he was willing to be reasonable about the situation.

This is troubling indeed though; a ghost order that gets paid for but disappears
from the BL system spells trouble for everyone.

That doesn't sound right. If he had a paypal transaction, then the seller
details would appear in the transaction details, along with an order number.

I imagine they filed it by mistake, then couldn't find it again.

But that would mean the buyer had the order on BL but the seller didn’t.
Still a problem for the seller (and BL!).

Ah yes, I missed that bit.

Surely the email address would still appear in paypal though as the money got
through.

The PayPal transactions for IC orders don't have the order ID because the
Order in BL is generated after the payment. They do have an IC ID and with that
the best is to contact admins and see if they can track what happened.

I have checked my orders received and nothing has come through to me.

I already had the case.
100% legit order, made from BrickLink and duly paid on site.
No order on BrickLink, not a single track of it.

I communicated with the buyer and we agreed he'll place a second exact same
order that I would invoice him manually for zero euro, and set paid.

Frankly, I wouldn't hesitate to contact the buyer - if this seems legit.
